This was our eleventh cruise, the second time with American Hawaii on the S.S.
Independence. We travelled with our 3
children, ages 12, 9 and 7 and a couple of friends. Our very first cruise was on this ship
13 years ago. Then we had nothing
to compare it with and thought it was great! Now, after going on ten more since then, it
is only average. The entertainment
was somewhat lacking on this trip. I don't know what happened in 13 years but it
definitely did not match up to what it was
then. The cruise director was not very entertaining like on most ships. I'm used to a
cruise director who doubles as a
comedian. The shows did not have much variety and there were not enough activities. They
planned all of the good
activities while most everyone was ashore. But the food and itinerary made up for the lack
of entertainment and activities.
The food was excellent. The fresh fruit, the hawaiian pineapple and papaya, especially
were wonderful. Also, the macadamia
nut ice cream and cookies. My husband ate two lobsters on the last night. Superb! We did
not go on any shore excursions
since we did those the last time and they don't give much break in price on kids. So, we
rented a car on each island and
explored on our own. This worked out beautifully. We put in a full day on each island and
saw just about everything we
wanted to see and still had time to shop. We also got to see an erupting volcano. The ship
came within a mile of it and we
got great footage on video tape. This is a good cruise for first time Hawaii visitors who
want to explore all islands.
