We decided to go a day ahead because we used our own air. We were lucky because all the
big snow storms
arrived after our departure. We also bought Travelguard insurance as a protection and
because my father is ill. I
think it is a good idea to buy independent insurance anyway. We tried the Embassy Suites
since it has free
transportation from the airport and to the ship. Ordinarily we receive excellent service
and value from Embassy
Suites, but they were overwhelmed with guests and with a Wedding Party. There were too few
staff for the
number of requests. We arrived at the port about 12:30 and boarded about an hour later.
This is a good time to
book your Aquaspa treatments or hair appointments. The desk is located towards the front,
near the doorway to
embarkation. The line will only be longer if you wait to do it on the ship. The half hour
message options cannot be
booked during the days at sea. The therapists do 12 one hour appointments during those
days. The lunch on the
day of arrival is excellent. It is in Islands Cafe. We were on Level 9, Vista Deck which
is a great place to be
located. We had an inside cabin because I like the dark, and I could not find a discounted
price for an outside
cabin (although I didn't try too hard). I used a travel agent in Florida, and the
documents came four weeks ahead
of time. He is licensed and bonded. It worked out well. The food and service are
excellent. I would say they were
better than 95% of the restaurants we have eaten in. You can't compare a ship that serves
9000 meals a week to
a small gourmet restaurant. The bridge teacher was very good (Alan). I hope he returns.
Many of us were
beginners and we still had a good time. The beauty salon was the same price that I've paid
on other ships. Again
it is not fair to compare the prices to the local shop back home. We did not go to the
entertainment, except the not
so newly wed game, which was really funny. Also the shore excursions were scare and
expensive, We took the
heliocopter ride at $80 apiece because it was a novel experience. But it was only 16
minutes long. The Diamond
Casino has nickel slots, if you are interested in a fun time. It is in St. Martin. The
things that we did not like were
the fact that the golf simulator is still broken. The pro was very unhappy because he took
the job expecting the
equipment would be fixed. The whirlpools were also mostly in need of repair. One didn't
work and one was room
temperature. The whole ship was very clean with subdued colors-marble, stainless steel,
and navy blue. It's too
bad they cannot fix everything. The casino paid out virtually nothing. Also I would agree
with other comments
thatyou should bring a hair dryer. We had a great time because the ship was almost always
at sea, but others
might want to visit ports for more than a few hours. We would take Celebrity again and
recomend it to our friends
for the value you receive for the money. Also the art collection on the ship is stunning.

My husband and two daughters traveled on board the Celebrity Century for its New Years
cruise. While we have
been on 10 previous cruises, we had never experienced the Celebrity line. We were very
impressed. I can
honestly say that I have cruised other great ships belonging to... Holland, Princess,
Magesty, RoyalViking ... and
this was the best cruise experience by far. I wish to thank this forum and those who
contribute to it for helping me
make the decision to choose Celebrity. I began cruising in the 70's when there were fewer
ships on the market,
which made the selection process easier. Today, with the new ship entries and cruise line
mergers, this forum -
and others like it - are most valuable to the traveler. We followed the advise of others
and arrived at the port at
2pm. [We did not buy an air/sea package.] The crowd had subsided, but it still took a
little time for us to board. I
have been on other ships that handle embarkation better. I was impressed with the escort
provided to take us to
our cabin -- a great idea and time saver -- and the quick arrival of our luggage. The ship
is beautiful and spotless.
We booked late and settled for an inside cabin; we were not disappointed. First of all,
our cabin was located on
the Sky deck alongside many suites. It was a very quite and motion-free area of the ship.
Secondly, the cabin
design is wonderful.
There was so much drawer space we did not fill it all. The bathroom was spacious and
accessorized with shampoo dispenser, enclosed garbage container and a great shower head.
It's obvious that
the cruise line has thought about the little things that help to make travelers feel
comfortable. The food was
incredible. I am a trained gourmet cook and I am fussy about the quality of ingredients.
Celebrity does not
short-change its guests in the food department. It was plentiful, it was beautifully
presented, and it was
scrumptuous. From the soups to the salads and onto the entree. AND, the desserts were to
die for! I must say
that on all the cruises I have taken, I am always able to show resistance to over eating.
Not so on this ship! The
lunches on deck were terrific (pizza and hamburgers yummy) and the midnight buffets were
unique and creative.
I especially enjoyed the fruit buffet and the tex-mex buffet. (Thank goodness for the
fitness center; I managed to
stay a size 6!) I was prepared for ho-hum entertainment since so many of the cruise
reviews (about this cruise
line and others)mention average lounge and theater shows. Not the case on Century.
We enjoyed the singers,
dancers and comics. The entertainment was above average. Shore excursions, we have found
from past
experience, can be costly and crowded. We prefer to make our own arrangements in every
port. As it turned out,
all of our pre-planning paid off and we had an exceptional time on each island. I cannot
say enough about the
Spa. The Spa Bath for $10 a day is a royal treat. I opted for the Seaweed Treatment and I
was not disappointed.
(I've been to spas all over the world and can make an accurate comparison.)The SPA is a
big plus for Celebrity
Cruises. As is the case with holiday cruises, there are many young people.
Our teenage daughters made many
new friends and truly enjoyed the atmosphere in the disco and at the pool. I must comment
that the guests on
board were lovely. We did not encounter rude passengers or intoxicated ones. Cruisers were
respecful of others
and obliged to the dress codes...I was particularly happy to see people in proper attire
as was suggested by the
ship's program. And by the way, I counted more men in tuxedos on formal nights than in
suits. All in all, we had a
memorable cruise with our children(the photographers were terrific). It was a great way to
ring in the New Year
(the parties all over the ship on New Years Eve were fabulous!),and to escape the winter
snow and freezing cold
back home. Would we cruise on Celebrity again? You bet we would!

First I like to say that my husband and I had a very nice time on the Century; that being
said, I will give a rather
critical review as there were many opportunities we would like to point out for
improvement. ABOUT US: We have
sailed on Princess, NCL, and RCCL. We did the exact same ports on Majesty of the Seas,
RCCL for our
honeymoon; this was for our Anniversary.
GOOD POINTS: We were in a suite (Sky Suite 1200) so embark/depart was very, very smooth.
We simply came at
12:20 pm and were in our room at 12:30. Our Room was beautiful; size-wise it was much
smaller than the
Penthouse Suite we had on the Norway but other than the size, it was by far a much nicer
room. RCCL's balcony
room I think was bigger than the Sky Suite room, but again the Century room was more
elegant than any other
room we have had. The marble bathroom even had a jacuzzi tub! The balcony was quite large
and very clean,
unlike the Norway balcony that was always covered in soot. The robes were nice to use all
week and we were
tempted to buy them, but decided against it. We had full breakfast served in our suite
every morning by our butler
(I'll talk about him later); we always added 'eggs benedict' to the breakfast menu as it
wasn't on it. They brought it
without a hitch!
Michael's club (the cigar bar) was very nice; they served drinks in real crystal glasses
and the chairs were SO
comfortable. The smoke never seemed too heavy; we looked up and saw tons of vents in the
ceiling.
We ate at with the Hotel Manager at the Captain's table one night; that was quite
thrilling. We were invited, I
presume, by the luck of the draw; the service was amazing. The Maitre'd was our server for
the night! The social
hostess, Angela, arranged everything. We met some nice new friends and found the night the
highlight of the trip.
And on that note, here comes the negative:
Now, I don't want to come across as a complainer; I just am going to give our insight into
some things that could
improve. That being said: On our cruise, there was a VERY large group (Royal Bank of
Canada) that took over the
ship---I mean literally took over. The very first day at sea, they had a business event
(party) at the pool-side. Yes,
the pool-side. Luckily, we had our own balcony to enjoy the morning, but I pitied the
other 500 people who weren't
with the bank. Little details to prove my point about them 'taking' over the ship: at the
captain's welcome party,
their trademark emblem was on all the monitors on the dance floor; the prize for the
Karioki (sp?) night was a hat
with the Royal Bank emblem; the Royal Bank's flag flew from the top of the ship; and, most
the times when the
cruise entertainers addressed the crowds they would say 'so I here we have some people
from Canada here'
and the whole crowd (except for a few of us) would scream. Now, we have nothing against
Canada; in fact, my
mother-in-law is Canadian. We were just against how a group booking could dominate the
cruise staff's
attention. The Royal Bank employees wore their name tags the entire cruise (even on formal
nights) so those of
us not belonging stood out. Now I don't mean to sound too bitter; it's just I wished we
had some sort of
pre-warning. I understand the 'big business' that a company like that brings; I just don't
think Celebrity should
have sacrificed the rest of us in order to ensure the success of that big business. I was
disappointed in the
staff's lack of energy: even the Captain didn't show up for the Captain's Club Cocktail
party! I assume that was
because he was at the Award Ceremony for the Royal Bank which took place at the same time.
Everything
seemed to be directed towards the group booking. This, along with some other reasons, are
why we probably
will not cruise on Celebrity again.
The butler was completely useless; he did bring us our breakfast every morning. But then
he would come back 1
hour later, knocking on our door--even though we had the do not disturb sign out--wanting
to retrieve our dirty
dishes. Twice he walked in on us (me in bed) without knocking. I'm use to the 'anything
you want' attitude that
Princess and RCCL had; when I asked for Lemonade at 4:00pm with my tea in the room, he
acted as if I asked
him to commit some sort of high crime. In MY brochere, it says that the suites can have
full meals at any time.
Now, there were a few other things here and there--the food was wonderful, but (now this
is me being picky) I
wished they had more pasta. I like Princess always having a pasta on the menu. The casino
was a joke. They
were teaching a dealer how to play craps with OUR money while we attempted to gamble.
The final straw was the attitude of almost every staff person we encountered (except our
cabin Steward Santana
who was GREAT): everyone seem to be looking forward to leaving. Now, I'm sure there are
thousands of people
who experienced the exact opposite, but this was our experience: 'So, how do you like your
job? Long hours, eh'
their response: 'Yes, but I've got only 5 more weeks so that's not so bad.' During the
last show, it was one of the
entertainers last day, and he was grinning ear to ear, and the Cruise director said
something to the effect: 'So-so
is happy as this is his last cruise after 5 months at sea!' Now, we have been on cruises
were the staff have been
at sea for months at end, with just very short breaks, and they seemed happy. They liked
their job. And that
carried over to us liking our cruise. I don't want to be on a ship with a whole bunch of
people who are just there
for a pay check; it's nice if they are having fun as well (or at least pretending to!)
So that's it. Perhaps we just had bad luck with over 1000 people on the ship being with a
group. Perhaps we just
had bad luck with the staff we encounterd. But one thing's for sure, it won't stop us from
cruising again! Please
feel free to e-mail me with any specific questions about shore excursions (Dunn's river,
scuba diving, etc) or
anything else.
HAPPY CRUISING!

Celebrity Century 1/16/99 - 1/23/99 Eastern Caribbean.
Let me start out by saying that this was a wonderful cruise that was soured by one big
problem. I will explain in my
remarks.
We traveled with my wife, her brother and sister in law. We took the air-sea package and
were provided with a flight
into Miami. There was some minor confusion with the busses but we finally got to the
terminal. Embarkation was
fairly smooth and we were escorted to our cabin (Deck 8, port side, mid ship Cabin 8063).
The stateroom was
clean but a little bit smaller than I had expected. The staterooms on HAL Statendam ships
are much larger. There is
a TV with CNN, ESPN, movies and some Pay services. The usual shampoos and lotions are in
dispensers. The
steward explained all of the amenities and his services. Throughout the trip the steward
(Raphael) did a
remarkable job. We went to lunch at the Islands Café (the buffet) and had a nice lunch.
Again everything was nice
and clean and service was great. We got underway on time and all was well. We had the
early seating and entered
the dining room at 6PM. The dining room is beautiful and we were promptly seated. The
waiter and busboy
introduced themselves and went right to work. I have read much about Celebrity food and I
was not disappointed.
The dining room experience is wonderful. The food and service are top notch. We then went
to the show. Again it
was a wonderful experience. The theatre is beautiful and the shows were wonderful. The
shows continued to be top
notch throughout the cruise. That night on the transit to San Juan the problems began. The
ship pitched and rolled
all through the night and all of the next day. I would guess we were rolling at least 8
degrees. I worked for the Navy
for 30 years and got better rides. I have also been on smaller cruise ships that rode
better. The sea state was 1 or
less. Winds were about 10-15 Knots. There was no reason for the ship to ride so poorly. I
complained to guest
relations and got the usual non-answer. Strangely, after we left San Juan the ship rode
better. In any case I would
not recommend this ship to anyone who is bothered by motion. It is a shame because other
than this it was a
wonderful cruise. All of the lounges that we visited had good entertainment and service.
The deck areas were nice but deck chairs were at a premium. Most of the time we could not
get chairs. Also, there
is no deck that permits you to walk all the way around on the exterior. The pools are nice
and the whirlpools are
crowded and cold. PORTS: San Juan - We were only there for a few hours, barely had time to
see the fort. We took a
bus tour of the town and came back aboard. It was after dinner hours so we had some pizza,
which was wonderful.
St. Thomas - Again we took a tour and enjoyed it very much. We spent the rest of the day
shopping (yes my wife got
jewelry). The island is pretty and the shopping is great - if you want jewelry or
electronics. St. Marteen - We took
another tour which included a semi-sub reef tour. The reef was sparsely populated and the
few fish had to be
baited to come to the boat. Again we shopped the rest of the time. Nassau - We explored on
our own. I do not like
being accosted to buy things - so we went back to the ship fairly early. We were only in
port from 2-7PM.
Disembarkation was great - smooth and well coordinated. In summary, we loved everything
except the ride. I know
we are on a ship in the

This was the third Celebrity cruise for my husband & myself, but the first cruise ever
for our friends. It had taken us 5
yrs to convince them of the 'value' of cruising. First impression of the ship is
wonderful! It is so beautiful we can't
believe this is the one we are actually going on. Embarkation is done pretty much
first-come, first-serve, except for
suite & Captain's Club passengers who are boarded first w/any handicapped. You are
given a number when you
arrive and wait for that number to be called. Boarding begins @ 1PM and goes quickly.
The only fault we can find is
that the public address system is eithr not loud enough or the person using it is
whispering as it is hard to hear the
numbers being called. Once on board, you are show to your room by white-gloved
housekeeping staff where you
are oriented to your home for the next week. The first time we had cruised, (on
Celebrity's Zenith) I had been so
impressed with this service that I couldn't believe that all cruise lines don't do it.
Next step is the buffet in the Islands
Cafe. Certainly welcome to those of us who had early flights and questionable airline
breakfasts. The ship is
impeccable. I have read several reviews, even some not so complimentary to Celebrity on
this site & all agree with
me. We are late sleepers and never had our cabin steward knock at our door trying to rush
us out so they could
make up the room.
Generally, by the time we came back from breakfast, it was already done. FOOD: and more
food!
The male half of our companion couple is a very picky eater, but found no fault with the
menu & selections in the
buffet. The dinner menus are never repeated but are standardized. If you want lobster
every night you will be out of
luck. There is beef/veal, seafood, chicken, pork, pasta every night. At least six
mouth-watering desserts and several
ice creams all made fresh on board the ship. While we were aboard, the TV ran a video
galley & bridge tour! We
learned that all bread is baked fresh every day and fresh ingredients are taken on @
different ports to ensure that
everything is the freshest possible. The midnight buffets always LOOKED wonderful, but we
had late seating dinner
and were so stuffed the thought of eating again only 1 1/2 hrs later was not pleasant. We
always had room the next
morning for breakfast, though.
Our favorite 'meal' besides dinner had to be afternoon tea. As I said, we are late
risers and usually barely make the breakfast buffet before it closes, so lunch is not an
option. So afternoon tea with
small sandwiches, pastries & frozen yogurt would hold us until dinner. Believe me, it
is impossible to go hungry.
ENTERTAINMENT: The Celebrity singers and dancers put forth their best efforts, but when
compared to some real
talent, they fade quickly. The featured female singer had played Mary Magdalene in Jesus
Christ-Superstar on
Broadway and she just blew everyone else away. There was a comedy/juggling act which was
pretty good, too. I
realize that this is not Las Vegas, but the shows are pretty decent.
Some lounge acts are tired. The Duo that sang in
the Rendezvous Lounge before dinner was very good. We enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail and
listening to them.
Plenty of people have written about the ports, so I won't go into them here. I will say
that this was my second time to
Jamaica & I still haven't seen Dunn's River Falls. maybe next time! Do we love
Celebrity? Yes, yes, yes! We hesitate
to go on another cruise line because we are afraid we will be disappointed. How did out
friends like cruising? They
can't wait to go again. We are planning a family reunion cruise in about 2 years and will
be definitely going on
Celebrity. We have sung their praises to so many of out family that several have taken
Celebrity cruises and will
never go on another line again.

This was our 2nd cruise, our first was on Carnival. Overall, my husband and I agreed that
this was a much better
cruise and value. We actually paid quite a bit less than for our Carnival cruise last year
and felt that Celebrity
exceeded Carnival in almost every way.
The disembarkation went smoothly. We were led to our cabin by a cabin steward. Nice touch.
The days at sea were nice however it was pretty crowded on deck. The food was outstanding
at every meal. Our
dinner companions were such nice people. My husband celebrated his birthday and we also
celebrated our
anniversary on board. The maitre'd made sure that we had a nice celebration with a cake
shared by everyone at
our table.
Our cabin steward, George, was absolutely fantastic. Actually, all of the Celebrity staff
couldn't have been nicer. I
had read other reviews that the staff wasn't that great but I definitely disagree with
that statement.
The weather was great for the entire cruise.
Ocho Rios, Jamaica - Did the Jamaica Party Boat which went to Dunns River Falls. We
climbed the falls with no
trouble, stopped at a beach, and then returned to the boat to continue drinking the
included all you can drink
rum punch. Nice excursion but saw about as much of Jamaica as we would ever want to.
Grand Cayman - Did the Stingray City Snorkeling excursion. This was great! Then we did
some shopping in
Grand Cayman. We really liked this island.
Cozumel - We did the Fiesta Party Boat excursion. All the rum punch and margaritas you can
drink. This went to
a very nice beach where we spent about 1 1/2 hour. We then returned to the dock and made
our tourist stops to
get a Hard Rock t-shirt, some jewelry, and then stopped at Carlos 'n Charlies. That place
was really wild. We had
a good time and then got a cab back to the ship.
Key West - This was also a nice stop although it was very hot the day we were there. We
went off on our own
there. Stopped at Hard Rock Cafe to get my usual t-shirt for my daughter, Margaritaville,
and the other tourist
shopping spots. This was a very nice day.
All in all this was an outstanding cruise and I'm already planning a reunion cruise for
next year.

Our family always takes a Christmas cruise. We were excited this year because we had been
aboard the Century
before during her first year sailings and found the ship, food and service exceptional for
a mid-price cruise. We
had high expectations.
Boarding at Port Everglades was a breeze. As members of the Captain's Club we went through
the express line
and were aboard within 20 minutes. The only problem was that one of our cabin keys did not
work and it took 4
tries at the reception desk before the problem was solved.
Ths ship was immaculate (as we remembered) and decorated tastefully for Christmas.
Unfortunately that's as far
as the Christmas sprit went. For most of the crew, it was just another week. Excepting an
impromptu Christmas
carrol sing along by passangers one night no special events were noted. The shows and
activities went on as
usual. (We did get a free glass of champaigne for Christmas Day dinner). On other lines
during Christmas week
there was an atmosphere of festivity and interaction between passangers and crew. There
was Christmas music
and staff dressing up as Santa and his elves, Christmas parties and games -- even
Christmas music. None of
that here, business as usual.
Century is a classy ship and is tastefully decorated. From the moment you step aboard you
are encapsuled with
fine arts, fine fabrics, polished brass, crystal and hardwoods. The ship reeks of quality.
The abundance of
tastefull public rooms from large 2- tiered show lounges to smaller nooks to read or
converse in are one of my
favorite things about the ship. No matter what your taste or what your pleasure, you
should find it here.
Although the ship was booked above capacity (many 3 & 4 to a cabin) there was ample
space and we never had
a sense of crowding like we experienced on other cruise lines. Whether going to a show,
sitting on deck or dining
in the buffet or dining room there was plenty of room.
The first time we walked into Century's dining room on the last cruise we stopped at the
top of the central
staircase and just looked -- it nearly takes your breath away. It was the same this trip.
Of all our cruises this is
our favorite dining room. We had a table for 10 in the lower center of the room ( a little
noisier than tables on the
upper level). Our wait staff and the dining service and ambience was up to the usual
Celebrity standards (which
are high). We think the food had slipped a notch or two compared with our other Celebrity
trips (I wonder if this is
the Royal Carribean influence taking hold). Although most meals were good to very good,
none were outstanding
and in a few cases, we had to return dishes because the meats were tough or fatty. We
never had this problem
before, on previous Celebrity cruises, food was always very good and often outstanding.
The floor shows have improved and are typical cruise ship fare -- a couple of production
numbers, a singer,
juggler, commedian, etc. Trios and singers in lounges, carribean band on deck, DJ in the
Disco at night, deck
party, etc.etc. Plenty of activity for all ages and pretty good in quailty.
Not much to say about the islands -- the usual Eastern Carribean stops. San Juan, St.
Thomas, St. Martin and
Nassau. The problem now is that in every port there are 3 or 4 other cruise ships with you
and the stops have
turned into tourist traps (buy your t shirts here). We used to cruise when we were the
only ship in port but those
days are long gone.
Debarkation was as easy as embarkation which is to say well done, we were off the ship by
08:30.
In summary, the Century, while having slipped a litte in the food department, is a great
experience and still one of
the best values for your cruising dollar.
