This was my 2nd cruise with Celebrity, having sailed on the Horizon in February of last
year, and I absolutely loved them both! There were some hurdles
that we had to overcome before actually boarding the Century. First, my mother and I
searched the internet for deals and eventually we found a price we
liked, so then it was only a matter of 104 days, just to show you how excited and eager we
really were. Our flight to Ft. Lauderdale took way too long. My
mother separately booked our airline tickets, in order to save money, but the flight was
very inconvenient. We flew Southwest Airlines out of Midway
Airport in Chicago, and had to stop in Nashville to drop off and pick up passengers. Then,
we stopped in Jacksonville, Fl. to pick up some more people,
and then on to Ft. Lauderdale. It was cool to be able to see the ship from the
airplane...seeing how big the Century really is. Once we landed, we had to
wait awhile before we were greeted by a Celebrity representative and be taken to our
weeklong home of luxury. Luxury is an understatement in
describing this ship.
We entered right through the Grand Foyer and I was exhilarated at the openness of it
all. My mom and I went to our stateroom, our
luggage not yet there, and the 2 beds were put together, so we left our cabin steward,
Vazio, a note to please separate the beds. We then went into the
Islands Cafe to have lunch, and we were instantly smacked in the face with pampering, with
two waiters offering to carry mine and my mother's trays to
our tables. ( I understand that many other cruise lines don't do this). Then we went back
to our stateroom and sure enough, our beds were separated
and our luggage was there. Although the breakfast and lunch buffets were good, my mom and
I were really looking forward to dinner in the dining room.
We had a convenient table right by the entrance, on the lower level, and we were greeted
by our charming and efficient waiter, Metin, and our
hard-working and always smiling busboy, Andrei. Both were wonderful throughout the week,
always smiling and never skipping or confusing anyone's
orders. Our maitre d', Oswald, was very congenial as well and he did a fine job of placing
us with nice people to eat with during the week.
The food was
just out of this world! For those of you who will be cruising on any Celebrity ship, you
can look forward to some of the finest cuisine afloat. The Ziti alla
Gorgonzola was my favorite entree, but really anything that I ordered was delicious. I
guess you can't go wrong with anything you order, and what a
breathtaking place to eat such excellent food, with the open sea gracing outside. The
midnight buffets, however, were a little disappointing. I did enjoy
the food, but I wasn't overwhelmed by it. It could have been because I was fairly tired.
There is a lot to do on that ship!
Our cabin was always very clean.
Vazio did a fabulous job of cleaning up after us, and he was very friendly as well,
stopping to talk to us and always asking us how our days were and our
dinners. Of course we told him that the dinners were excellent. The itinerary was fairly
decent. It consisted of: Ft. Lauderdale, at sea, Ocho Rios, Grand
Cayman, Cozumel, at sea, Key West, Ft. Lauderdale. The day at sea was beautiful, not a
cloud in the sky. And surprisingly, the pool deck still wasn't too
crouded. The poolside entertainment was good as well. The band Prodigy played a very wide
selection of music, and they were very well received. The
next day, my mom and I didn't get off the ship for Ocho Rios, because she had been there
before and said that it was dangerous, so we stayed on board
and had the pool all to ourselves.
Grand Cayman was very pretty and charming. The stores basically sold the same kind of
stuff, and you had to look and
negotiate for good bargains. After shopping we went to Seven Mile Beach and basked in the
sun. Then, we tendered back (Celebrity used its lifeboats).
The trips from and to the ship were smooth. Everyone was appointed fairly- no
line-jumpers. Cozumel, the little I saw of it, made me a bit uncomfortable.
We shopped in that small cluster of shops closest to the ships, and for some reason,
people thought that we were just going to throw them money left
and right. I am a silver lover, and many people told me that Cozumel is a great place to
get silver for very cheap. The stores I went into were anything but
cheap, and many of the workers would pull me away from my mom and try to convince me to
buy the overpriced merchandise. My mom was my good luck
charm. She convinced me to keep looking for better priced things. Eventually, we did find
a cute little shop that sold the same kind of bracelets, rings,
etc., and I saved a bundle. For what I could have spent on one bracelet in a rip-off
store, I instead got 2 bracelets, a ring, and a blanket, so buyers,
beware. Be firm in your willingness to buy. Negotiate. Key West, the favorite of the
itinerary, was gorgeous! I really enjoyed myself there. There weren't
people breathing down your neck for your money and they weren't trying to get you to try
things on that you didn't want to. Prices there were very
reasonable and I also felt welcome and safe there. We didn't really do any organized
excursions, but we did visit the aquarium, and had a peek into
several other places as well. Key West is definitely a good place to go!
This cruise was a high school graduation present, and it was such a pleasant
experience. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and I know my mother did too. I recommend
cruising to anybody, but I especially recommend Celebrity Cruises
to everybody. The Century has been very well-maintained- with someone always risking their
life painting the side of the ship or someone waxing the
public room floors. Seldom has Celebrity ever had complaints from any of its passengers,
and they sure won't get any complaints out of me. I am a happy
sailer and I will cruise with Celebrity again.
