I went on this cruise with my family and my friend's family. It was a great experience and
I will definetily do it again
sometime. I met alot of new and interesting people my age. I went on my school's spring
which differs from other
schools so my frined and I thought that there was not going to be many people my age
going. It turned out that alot
of people were there and most of them were worth getting to know. The waiters were
excellent. You could not find a
better dining room staff. All in all the service was great. The food was even better. I
thought that I wouldn't like all
the stuff that they served because most of it I couldn't pronounce. But I took a chance
and it was great.
All of the parties at night were great. This is a party boat but many of those laid back
people were having fun too. I
haven't been on many cruises so naturally i thought that this one was great. If anybody
wants a way to meet new
people, see some beautiful sights and have a ton of fun this could be your boat.

This was my fifth cruise and my husband's sixth. We will be celebrating our tenth
anniversary in May, so we
"splurged" and got the Suite with a Veranda on the 10th floor, near the center
elevators. Great location! We took
our children, ages six and seven, along with us. This was their second cruise and they're
definitely hooked on
cruising!
We did our own air from Indianapolis, because we could get it cheaper, and we didn't have
to change planes. We
just made one stop in Orlando, which was nice. We were afraid Celebrity might send us
through Chicago or Detroit
if we booked the air with them, and we wanted to avoid any weather delays if at all
possible. Also, we like the idea
of claiming our luggage at the airport ourselves, and then taking a cab to the port
instead of waiting for the cruise
line to provide bus service. This is nice if you're traveling with kids, or if you want to
avoid the wait of getting to the
ship. We grabbed a porter at the baggage claim and he quickly got us a cab to the port for
$16. Well worth it, and
hassle-free.
Our Suite was very nice. The Butler and Room Stewardess were there to greet us, as were
the fresh flowers,
champagne, bath robes, etc. By the end of the week, we decided we could live without the
Butler, but the veranda
was a must. Our kids were asleep by 10:00pm every night, so it gave us a place to hang out
and have some time
alone rather than going to bed or sitting in a dark room while they slept. I highly
recommend a veranda for this
purpose as well as observing the scenery and enjoying the fresh air. Back to the Butler .
. . he brought us our
requested room service each morning of coffee, hot chocolate, juice and fresh fruit at
6:45, but reeked of cologne
and my husband thought he was a little over friendly to me. He was always available to
cater to us, and sometimes
was around too often, but maybe that's what Butler's do! Anyway, unless you have one at
home, you probably can
get away without one on the cruise.
Our kids loved the Children's Program, and opted to spend each morning in the Fun Factory
while we went off the
boat and looked around in the shops. This was a wonderful feature of Celebrity, because
some ships and
all-inclusive hotels won't let you leave the property while your kids are the children's
program, but Celebrity does.
This was beneficial for all of us! We had to pick them us by noon, so they would accompany
us to a beach in the
afternoons or we would all hang out at the pool. They could then return to the children's
program at 2:00 until
5:30pm. And again at 7:30 - 10:00pm. On the two formal nights, they allow the children to
stay in the Fun Factory
during dinner hours so parents can dine alone. Another nice benefit of Celebrity. Our
children are great eaters and
enjoyed the dinners, but for those who are picky, they offer hot dogs and hamburgers each
evening for dinner, as
well as nice variety for kids. The Fun Factory is equipped with Sony Play stations and
much, much more, so we had
a heard time getting our kids to leave. The staff was wonderful. They also offer group
babysitting for $3 per hour
from 10:00pm to 1:00am, but we didn't use this service. There were 130 kids on the ship
the week we sailed, but
you saw very few of them and they were very well behaved. Most were repeat cruisers, and
the price tag for the trip
would be prohibitive for a lot of families.
The evening shows were alright, but nothing spectacular. The magician was very good, as
were the Chinese
acrobats. The kids in the Children's Program sat together for both of these shows and had
an enjoyable evening.
Our ports were St. Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Antigua and St. Thomas. We did the
seven-hour excursion in St.
Lucia so the kids could see the volcanos. It was a great trip for the most part. Be
advised that St. Lucia is very hilly
and the roads are very narrow and winding! The one hour bus trip to return back to the
boat was horrible. The
boat ride to the volcano was wonderful, but just be advised of the bus portion. Oh, and
did I mention they drive on
the opposite side of the road from the US to add even more excitement to the adventure. We
noticed there were no
local cars on the roads, only taxis and buses.
We took a cab to the Hilton in Barbados and used their beach. This was a wonderful cove
with nice sized waves,
but calmer water than the open ocean. We even checked into the rates and would like to
return to Barbados to
stay at the hotel. We did learn from our cab driver that the hotel is going to be torn
down and rebuilt this summer.
We liked the open air market in Martinique, but found that no one would bargain with us.
It's all they can do to
convert the price into US currency. Every other vender was selling yo-yos. We took a ferry
to a beach in the
afternoon, and had forewarned our 7- year-old son about the topless women. We found
ourselves feeling rather
sleazy hanging out with them and decided to leave when the lady selling swimming suits on
the beach took off her
top to show the lady of the family next to us a different style of bikini top. When she
got ready to show her the
different bottom style, we looked at each other in disbelief, but were relieved when she
exposed only her thong
bikini under the swim suit bottom. Not a great place for families!
We did a snorkeling/beach excursion in Antigua with the kids. It was a great time. You may
want to take your own
masks and flippers, as flippers were in short supply and our daughter and I had a hard
time getting our masks to
not leak. But for our first time snorkeling with the kids it wasn't bad, and they got to
see some fish and coral. The
catamaran ride in itself was worth the trip and not everyone snorkeled.
Overall, we had a great family vacation and to put the icing on the cake, gave up our
airplane seats in San Juan for
four round trip tickets to anywhere in the US, including San Juan and Hawaii, so we were
happy and are looking in
to planning a trip to Hawaii next spring break.

This was our first cruise. My wife and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. We
went with another couple who
was also celebrating their 25th anniversary. We had planned from the start to leave our
two teenagers home and were glad
we did. This was the first time in 25 years we spent any significant time away from the
kids and it was much needed.
We were looking for a more upscale cruise than just a party boat. Our travel agency
suggested the Galaxy and I believe we
made the right choice. From the time we left Cleveland to the time we returned almost
everything met or exceeded our
expectation. Even though this was our first cruise so I have no comparisons, I cant
believe there is any cruise line that can
exceed Celebrity in most all aspects.
We chose the air/sea program and although it may have cost a bit more it is well worth the
piece of mind. We dropped our
luggage off at the airport ticket counter and the next time we saw it was in our
stateroom. It worked the same way coming
back. No hassles with luggage.
The ship is clean, bright and has a lot of class. The public areas are large and numerous
so you never feel crowded. From
the Savoy lounge to the Stratosphere nightclub to the interlude bar to the martini bar
there is mood and atmosphere for
everyone. You can choose to be where the action is or find a quiet corner to relax.
My wife and the massage at the Aqua spa and was very pleased with the staff. Again
its a little expensive but after 25 years
of me she earned it.
We optioned for late seating to allow time to recover from our shore excursions prior to
dinner. This worked out well for us. It
still allowed time to take in a show, gamble or just relax after dinner. I would recommend
those who wish to take advantage of
the midnight buffet to consider early seating. We never made it there, as our dinner did
not finish until 10:00.
There were all ages on the ship from very young to very old although the over 40
definitely out numbered the younger
crowd. But us older crowd partied just the same. The crew was visible and courteous but
not to the point of being obtrusive.
They worked very hard at making sure you were well taken care of. From the dining room
staff, to the bar staff to the
stateroom staff they were all excellent.
Our cabin was an outside stateroom category 9 with veranda on the vista deck. Although we
booked and cabin without the
veranda and received an upgrade I would recommend the veranda if you could afford it. It
spoiled us. I dont think I would
cruise without one now. Although you dont spend a great deal of time in your cabin
we kept our balcony door open at night
to listen to the waves against the shop as the ship rocked us to sleep.
We booked three shore excursions through the ship. The cave and flower garden tour on
Barbados, the Jolly Roger cruise
on Antigua and the Buck Island snorkeling on St. Thomas. All three were excellent. The
cave and garden tour I think was a
little pricey for what it offered. The Jolly Roger was a big party with lots of rum and
swimming. I dont remember too much
about the rest of the day on Antigua afterwards. Watch out for the rum punch. Too much
will put you out. The snorkeling at
Buck Island was another outstanding experience. Be aware the island is 3+ miles from St.
Thomas and the small sailing ship
on the excursion does quite a bit of rocking. If you are susceptible to motion sickness
you may not want to take this
excursion.
On St. Lucia we took a taxi tour which was a good way to see the island. On Martinique we
hit the beach for some sun and
water. It was crowded and there were women topless so be aware if youre looking for
a beach for the family.
Now for the few negatives. My wife and I and the couple with us are avid golfers. We were
disappointed the golf simulator on
the sports deck was not working for the entire duration of our cruise. After consuming
some of the refreshments in the
mini-bar the first night, it was not until Monday the cabin staff restocked it. The safe
in the room was nice except it
occasionally had a mind of its own and chose to not accept the combination. Maybe it was
just us. The most significant
complaint I have is not necessary against Celebrity. They publish a daily newsletter
stating the recommended dress for
dinner that evening and request the attire be maintained throughout the ship all evening.
It seems a portion of the guests on
the ship either didnt read the letter or chose to ignore the recommendations. I read
a lot of complaints about dressing up for
dinner and wearing a suit or tux throughout the evening and I can certainly understand
this is not some peoples idea of a
vacation. If that is not your thing then I would suggest a more informal cruise line like
RCCL or Carnival. I would like to see
Celebrity keep its classy appearance by expecting its guests to adhere to dress codes.
Bathing suits in the restaurant for
breakfast is not what I expect to see on this cruise line. Save it for the café or pool.
We are already planning our next cruise with Celebrity either on the Galaxy to Alaska or
the Mercury to the western
Caribbean for our 30th anniversary.

This review is based on the seven day sailing we took with extended family member from
4/17-4/24! What a time we
had!!Know that we are veteran cruisers with lines such as Carnival, Norwegian, and Royal
caribbean to our credit and this
was the best thus far for a multitude of reasons!! My hope is that this does not become to
long winded, but I feel I must go in
to great detail in order to paint an accurate and informative review. Therefore, I shall
start from the beginning.
Day 1 - Embarkation Day
After 13 months of anticipation, we finally found ourselves at the Rochester International
Airport in Rochester, NY at five am
for our six thirty flight to Newark, New Jersey. We took advantage of Celebrities Air/Sea
program as for us, this is what is
easiest and gets us the best rates. Upon our arrival and much to our dismay, we found that
our flight to Newark had been
delayed for an hour and a half due to the fact that the flight crew had gotten in late the
evening before and needed a certain
number of hours of sleep between flights. Unfortunately, this would mean that we would
miss our connecting flight from
Newark to San Juan at eight forty five. The staff for Continental could not have been more
helpful and immediately booked
us on another flight to San Juan leaving at twelve twenty. While we were somewhat
disappointed as this meant we would not
be on the ship until close to five, we were so impressed with the helpfilness of the
staff. many people were very annoyed at
this delay as they felt they could have slept in also. My feeling was that I would rather
sleep in mid-air that have the flight
crew sleeping in mid-air so I was not too bothered! Upon our arrival in Newark, we found
ourselves leisurely strolling to our
gate when we happened to notice a Continental flight leaving for San Juan in fifteen
minutes! Being the spokesperson for
the group, I approached the counter and asked if there remained any seats. This turned out
to be a good move for within
ten minuted, we found ourselves sitting on the plane. Our luggage would be transferred to
San Juan and would meet us
down there! We were thrilled as this would mean more time on the ship and more time to
explore and learn our way around!!
Again, many thanks to Continental for being so helpful and getting us to San Juan three
hours ahead of time!! Things really
can work out in the end if one is polite and attempts to create a little of their own
luck!! After a smooth flight, we landed in
San Juan...flew in right over the cruise ship docks - and were met at the sirport by a
Celebrity delegate who was polite and
helpful!! As Celebrity claims luggage for its passnegers ( a big plus as the other cruise
lines usually do not ), we were
escorted to a waiting air-conditioned bus and taken to the ship! Along the way, two people
separate and apart from each
other stopped us to ask if we were sailing on the Galaxy. Upon our enthusiatsic yes, both
informed us that they had just
disembarked and that they had had the times of their lives!!...this is always good to
hear!! We were very impressed with the
Galaxy even at a distance!! She is breathtaking!! Check-in was the easiest and fastest I
have ever experienced of any line I
have sailed on!! We were on the ship in our cabin quite literally 10 minutes after
arriving at the port!! This was a real treat
as we are used to having to wait in line for at least 25 minutes in order to complete the
check in formalities! As we
approached our cabin, our cabin stewardess, Izabella, was right there to greet us, show us
how to operate the in-room safe,
and to unlock out refrigerator. Believe me when I say that Izabella was the best cabin
attendant we have ever had!! Upon
our arrival, she informed my uncle who along with his girlfriend were staying in the cabin
next to us not to worry because the
walls were sound proof and even if we put a glass to the wall, we would never hear them
and their antics!! Well, right there I
knew we were in good hands...a sense of humor is paramount for a good vacation!! (
although we did notice that the walls
are not 100% sound proof!!!! )! We then set out to explore the ship and were very
impressed with the cleanliness and
design of the Galaxy. The inside of the ship is beatifully decorated...at leats accoding
to my taste with polished gold rails,
interesting art designs, muted carpet tones, and plenty of elevators which we never had to
wait long for! We then went to our
first dinner. This first night, people are assigned a dinner seating according to what
time they arrive at the ship. We were
assigned main seating and found that the first meal was open seating according to how one
entered the dining room. Our
waiter this evening, Farratin, was wonderful!! We were sorry that he was not to be our
regular waiter as he was so attentive
and pleasant!! I had the veal piccata which was wonderful!! After dinner, we went back to
our cabin and found that our
luggage had been delivered! Let me say here that it is always good to pack a change of
clothes and shower essentials in
your carry on as you can't count on your luggage being delivered before dinner. This was
the first time we had seen our
luggage since 5 am and we were thrilled to see it was all there and intact! My mother and
I decided to get off the ship and
visit the little duty free shop on the pier that is avaiable only to Celebrity clients.
There I purchased three six packs of Pepsi
for the refrigerator in the cabin and a few souvenirs all for under $10! My mother likes
beer and was disappointed to learn
that they had sold out of beer. We wish that we had gone upon our arrival. This was nice
to have in the cabin when I was
getting ready for dinner and so forth. Also, know that a can of diet coke is $2.02 once
the tip is included!! We then relaxed,
showered, and went up on deck for the sail away. San Juan is gorgeous at night which made
for a magnificnet backdrop as
we pulled out of port! We were also able to watch as the Dawn Princess pulled out behind
us! After a couple of drinks and
since we had been up since 4am, to bed it was!!
Day 2 - At Sea
Days at sea are so peaceful and relaxing that in a way I wish we had had a couple more!!
We began our day with breakfast
in the Oasis Cafe which serves a buffet style breakfast. I was amazed to learn that, after
passing through the line, waiters
are there to take the trays of ladies and escort them to a table! I did notice that this
service was extended only to the
ladies...sorry guys!! The food was wonderful ( I will get to the description of meals
later as this in itself is an entire category!!
). We then went our separate ways and I made my way up to the deck to catch a bit of sun!!
At first, there was plenty of deck
space, but as the morning wore on, it became a premium. But there is definitely much more
deck space on the Galaxy than
on most of the other ships on which I have sailed. At 10:30 we had a mandatory life boat
drill where we had to report to our
muster stations with life vests on and were taken through the motions of what to do should
an emergency occur. Let me
mention here how helpful the crew was to people who were disabled or in wheel chairs!
There was always someone to assist
them getting off the ship, on the ship, during drills such as this, etc. If one needs
special assistance, you will definitely find
yourself in good hands!! later that day, we attended the port and shopping talk for our
first few ports of call. The man in
charge of port shopping was ever so helpful!! If one needed special information on where
to find that once in a lifetime
purchase, it was a matter of filling out a form with your requests and cabin number and he
researched for you and had the
information delivered to your cabin that evening! How handy!! That night was formal night
and the first evening at our
assigned tables. After the wonderful service we had received from Farratin the evening
before, we were a bit nervous about
what we would find in our assigned waiter. All of our worries were put to rest upon
meeting Valentin Angelov!! He was
attentive, concerned, funny beyond belief, entertaining, and helpful!!! Each night, he had
some little trick to show us either
with a napkin, or melting the plastic drink swords into sun glasses, or tellin us some
antic about his day! Every evening, he
gave us a mini port talk informing us of where to go, where not to go, where the good
beaches were, etc. We found his
information to be as good as if not better than the actual port lecturer! We then attended
the showds in the Celebrity
Theater ( more on the shows later!!).
Day 3 - St Lucia
St. Lucia is a beautiful island!! The only complaint I have is that in town, the people do
pester you for a cab, to buy their
products, etc. A very pleasant but firm NO generally does the trick. We spent the morning
in town shopping and then
returned to the ship to enjoy the the pool, hot tubs, etc. I talked to some people who had
taken some tours and while they
enjoyed them, found them to be long and expensive. Actually, I think that if one can find
a good cab driver, you can get a
cheaper and better tour than what the ship offers! St. Lucia is the only island where we
had to tendered to. This was an
interesting experience as the water was quite rough on this day. I was a bit worried about
my mother as one had to take a
big jump down in order to get off from the island onto the tender, but the crew literally
grabbed her arms and swung her
down!! There is a nice little shopping area right at the cruise ship terminal that met all
of our needs. We did take a ferry over
to Point Serafine to the shopping area over there, but found that we could have lived
without this. Overall, I liked St. Lucia
and would not hedge to visit again.
Day - 4 Barbados
Here we were able to walk right off the ship. A warning, though, that it is quite a walk
along the dock in order to get into the
cruise ship terminal. Once there, however, there were some neat shops and a liquor store
with great prices! I bought a hand
crafted necklace and matching bracelet for about $12 while my uncle's grilfriend bought a
bottle of Malibu for about $7. We
then took a taxi into town and did a bit of shopping. It was very hot, however, and as I
did not find anything very striking, I do
not think that I would do this again, but would instead spend some time at the beach. I
spent the reamiander of the day on
the ship in the hot tub talking with a number of people...most of which are always a good
sorce of information on one topic or
another or at the very least, entertaining to watch!!
Day - 5 - Martinique
We were a bit concerned about Martinique after having read the other submissions at this
site and having talked to people
who had already been here. However, I found it to be quite a charming place! Know that I
do speak french which was an
enormous help!! From my own observances, most people who had negative experiences had it
coming either judging from
their supremist attitudes!! I wandered around the craft market which is a short walk from
the dock and got a great deal on a
beautiful painting of an island scene and some woven bags and so forth! I learned from
some fellow passnegers that
afternoon that they had been greatly entertained by local women modeling swim attire!!
While in the hot tub, I met an older
couple of which the husband talked about this so much with me that his wife held off and
slugged him and called him a few
choice words! Our waiter, Valentin, had had a few hours off on this afternoon and spent
them at the beach. He was quite
impressed with these women and spent about 10 minutes after dinner making a bikini top and
bottom out of napkins for us in
order to demonstrate the happenings on the beach that afternoon!!!
Day 6 - Antigua
I loved Antigua and would love to go back to this island and stay for a week. The minute
you walk off the ship you find
yourself right in the heart of the shopping district! There are some very upscale shops
and then some street vendors
peddling their goods! I myself love bartering with them and again got some good prices on
some island crafted jewelry. One
store that I loved was the Goldsmitty which sells upscale unique pieces of jewelry. I also
went to the Big Banana cafe and
bought a tee-shirt as a keepsake. The beaches are phenominal and a visit to one is a must!
Day - 7 St. Thomas
St. Thomas still remains my favorite island!! There is so much to do and most of it is
only a short walk from the cruise ship
terminal. This day, however, I took a shore excursion for a hald day to Buck Island. It
was money well spent!!! The crew on
the sailbaot Doubloon were terrific!! They were funny, friendly, and entertaining!! The
sail over was exhilerating and offered
many splendid oppertunities for photos of St. Thomas and neighboring islands! The crew
played Bob Marley tunes on the
way over and struck up lively converations with all aboard!! Once we anquored in Turtle
Cove, the crew briefed us on what
we would see, handed out snorkeling gear, and told us where not to venture. They highly
encouraged us to take the tour
offered by one of the crew which most people opted to do. What a tour it was...we saw sea
turtles, sting rays, and a wide
assortment of fish! One lady kept asking if there were any sharks. The captain replied
that not during the day as they were
all downtown hawking their goods, but later that night, we might be able to catch a
glimpse!! Well, after seven days and five
islands of sharks, we all howled!! On the return back to St. Thomas, the crew served up
complimentary chips, sodas, and
rum punch!! Upon reaching St. Thomas, I had to meet family members downtown in Charlotte
Amalie and needed to grab
some things from my cabin before catching a cab. As I was in a hurry, I ran up the first
gangway in sight and found myself in
the heart of the crew quarters. Thank goodness that Valentin, the waiter, saw me as he
gave me a nudge back in the right
direction!! ( too much rum punch on the Doubloon, apparently!! ). Needless to say, I took
some good natured ribbing that
evening at dinner! Always make sure that you enter the ship via, the passenger gangway...I
wonder if I would have been
missed at work on Monday???? Charlotte Amalie is a mecca for those that like to shop! One
can wander glassy-eyed
through the little alley ways for days on end if one chooses! i myself spent a fair amount
of time in the open air craft market!
On the cab ride back to ship, I met a lady and her father from one of the other cruise
ships in port that day and she
discouraged me from taking the cable car up to Paradise Point ( this was on my agenda ) as
there was not much to see
once there. ( A few of my fellow passnegers confirmed this too me as they had done this ).
I then spent the reaminder of the
afternoon wandering through tthe stores at the Havensight Mall right at the cruise ship
terminal! We were all a bit sad at
dinner that night as it is always hard to have such a great vacation come to an end.
Disembarkation
Just as embarkation, disembarkation was easy and quick! At 6am, represnetative from the
airlines came on board for people
who wanted to check in early. We recieved our boarding passes and luggage tickets before
we even got off the ship. We
then headed up to the Oasis cafe for a quick breakfast and then to the Savoy Nightclub to
await our call to leave the ship. as
we had a fout thiry flight out, we opted to take a shore excursion tour of San Juan. At
about nine, we were led off the ship to
where the luggage is kept. As anyone who has cruised before knows, it can be a nightmare
trying to locate one's luggage
amidst thousnads of other pieces. Celebrity made it easy by having all the bags given a
certain number and then separated
in different sections according to number! I found mine almost immediately!! We then made
our way to the airline area where
represnetative took out baggage tags from earlier and put them on our bags and loades them
on the truck bound to the
airport! We did not see them again until that night in Rochester! We enjoyed the tour of
San Juan a lot! We stopped at Fort
San Christobal and then had some time to shop in Old San Juan. teh damage from Hurricane
Georges from last summer
was amazing even though10 months had passed. The citizens of San Juan are in the process
of rebuilding. we were then
dropped off at the airport to await our flight. It was a bit depressing watching people
arrivinga and leave with the Celebrity
rep. we did our part by telling them that they would be far from disappointed!! Actually,
our cruise was the last caribbean
cruise for this season and the Galaxy was doing a two week repositioning cruise to Los
Angles and then on to Alaska. I
cannot imagine two weeeks on the ship!!
Food
The food was very, very good. I do need to mention, however, that I do not feel it was
five star. Perhaps we had high
expectations as we had read and heard about how fabulous the food was on Celebrity. As I
say, it was very good, but there
was an element of disappointment on our part. It is definitely better than most cruise
lines we have been on!! Some things I
had that I especially enjoyed was the veal piccata, the shrimp scampi, the turkey and
dressing, the NY Strip, all of the
breads, and the chilled soups! You absolutely must try the french toast...it is
outstanding! All of the food at the Oasis Grill by
the pool was excellent...they serve some of the best burgers and hot dogs I have ever had!
Their fries are good also!! In the
late afternoon and again in the evening, the Grill serves pizza. This pizza is
tremendous!! I made it a point to have some
each evening! One evening we struck up a conversation with the people at the table next to
us. they sailed on celebrity
about three years ago and feel that the food standards have slipped as before they found
the food to be outstanding and
now, while still very good, a bit below what it was before. they are wondering if the
recent buyout of Celebrity by Royal
Caribbean has something to do with this.
Service
The best service I have ever had was on the Galaxy!! Our waiter, cabin stewardess, bus
boy, and maitre d' were all
wonderful, helpful, and hilarious!! I think that how you repond to them has a great deal
as to how they will repond to you. A
little humor and politeness do go a long way! The Galaxy is the cleanest ship I have
sailed on to date!! I could not find as
much as a marchino cherry stem on the seat of a chair! Our linens on our beds were
literally changed daily as were the
cabins swept even if they did not need to be!
Entertainment
I was very pleased with the entertainment. The Celebrity dancers were outstanding as were
the Chinese Acrobats! I
especially enjoyed the Hollywood and Cirque du Galaxy performances! The main female
singer, Tara Angeloni should be on
Broadway ( actually, I think she may have been if my memeory serves me correctly )! The
other clubs around the ship were
great! There was always a great deal to choose from each evening with special areas for
teens to socialize away from
others. I especially liked the Karaoke and the Acapella group who sang. The casino,
Fortunes, was very good and I actually
saw quite a few people win throughout the week!!
Overall, I had the time of my life!! This was my first cruise with Celebrity and I intend
to travel this line again. I think that it is a
step above most of the other mass market lines and is very quality oriented! I hope that
my account is of some service to
others planning their vacation. Feel free to e-mail with any questions!! Have Fun!!!

Our Spring Break 1999 cruise on the Celebrity Galaxy was our eighth cruise, and second
cruise with Celebrity Cruises. We
have also been on the Celebrity Century, Royal Majesty, Nordic Empress (twice), Norwegian
Wind, Leeward and Grandeur
of the Seas. Our itinerary was the 7-night Southern Caribbean, with stops at St. Lucia,
Barbados, Martinique, Antigua and
St. Thomas. We were a party of four, my wife Linda and I, and our two children Jonathan
and Lara, ages 12 and 9.
The Galaxy was our second Celebrity ship. We had sailed on the Century during the summer
of 1997. Therefore, we had
very high expectations. We were not disappointed in the least. Did they exceed our
expectations, like the add says? No. But
our expectations were high to begin with, and they were met. We had a wonderful time.
The Galaxy offers an exceptional cruising experience. It is an upscale cruise, stylish,
not glitzy. But, it is not for everyone.
The passengers on our cruise ranged from young children to senior citizens, with the
majority of passengers in the 35-50
year old range. There were many children on board because our cruise was during Spring
Break. It was definitely not a
party crowd. This ship offers a high degree of refined service, with wonderful food on a
magnificent vessel. Those who are
looking for a wild time, non-stop activities, and crazy parties should look elsewhere.
For us, taking the Southern Caribbean itinerary was an opportunity to see four completely
new islands. The only islands on
the itinerary we had gone to before were St. Thomas, and the adjacent St. John, which you
can reach by ferry. The other
ports would be new for us. Our plan was to find a good place to snorkel at every port,
which we did.
Our flights were very good. We had a flight leaving Newark at 12:30 in the afternoon,
which worked out well. It allowed us to
drop off Penny, our shaggy golden retriever, that morning, rather than take her the night
before. We arrived in San Juan,
PR around 5:30 in the late afternoon (with the 1 hour clock change). We were met by a
Celebrity/RCCL rep. at the gate, and
taken to mini-busses for transport to the pier area. Our luggage was taken directly from
the plane to the ship. We did not
have to claim our luggage.
When we arrived at the port, we saw the Dawn Princess, Rhapsody of the Seas, Carnival
Fascination and Windjammer
Legacy. Hidden behind the Rhapsody was the Radisson Diamond, which we could see after the
Rhapsody left port.
Embarkation was very easy. We are Captain's Club (repeat passenger program) members. But
it didn't matter, since there
were actually agents with no one in line, so it took only about two minutes to register,
and we were off toward the ship.
After our 'obligatory' embarkation photo, we proceeded to board the vessel. We have a full
collection of embarkation photos,
except for the Leeward, which we boarded from the side of the terminal since it was
raining, and therefore didn't get one. We
boarded the Galaxy on the third deck (not into the atrium level entrance that is used with
multi-deck piers) and were met by
attendants. We were not escorted to our cabin, but there was an attendant in the elevator
who rode up with us to the 10th
deck and pointed us in the right direction. Since we had a similar cabin in the same
location on the Century, we knew exactly
where to go.
Traveling with our children, we booked one of the family cabins in the ship's stern. The
cabin had a queen sized bed, two of
the traditional cruise sofa/beds near the panorama window, as well as a pull down upper
berth fifth bed. The room had a
sliding wood and glass divider in the center, separating the two sleeping areas. It was
quite roomy, approximately 210 sq. ft.
Cabin service was top notch. Our cabin steward and his assistant, who were always around,
never seemed to be in our
room. Yet everything seemed to get done. Their timing was very good.
After we quickly settled into our cabin, we noticed that it was 6:15 and immediately went
to dinner. Since flights arrive into
San Juan all day and even into the evening, and since the ship doesn't depart until 11:00
p.m., dinner on the first night is
open seating. You don't get assigned to your particular table until the next day.
We were seated at a table for six with Roland and his daughter, Carina. Both were avid
past cruisers, and Carina was a
cruise ship expert like our son. We had fun talking all through dinner, and knowing this
would be our only time together
unless we made further arrangements (the Galaxy is a Huge Ship and you might not see a
person again) we exchanged
cabin numbers and E-mail addresses.
After dinner, we went out to explore the ship a little. The ship is gorgeous. Aside from
the solarium pool on the Galaxy, the
ship is very similar to sister ship Century. Cabins range from Deck 4 up to Deck 10, with
some additional suites on Deck 12.
Deck 11 is the pool deck, which also houses the Oasis Café, which is the buffet dining
room. Deck 12 is the wrap around
sun deck, which encircles the pool area, only one level higher. Deck 12 also houses the
forward Stratosphere Lounge.
The Orion Dining Room, the main dining room, is on Decks 5 and 6. There is a beautiful
staircase from one level to the
other. Decks 5, 6, 7 and 8 contain the other public areas, including the Rendezvous
Lounge, the Library, the Sony
Computer Center, the Galaxy Shops, the photo gallery, the Savoy Lounge, Michael's Pub, the
Celebrity Theater, the movie
theater, and the casino, the purser's desk and guest relations. There are two foyer areas,
the Grand Foyer, which is
mid-ship, and the Orion Foyer, which is by the Rendezvous Lounge and Orion Dining Room.
Both are rather understated,
not grandiose like the Centrum areas on Royal Caribbean ships.
Unfortunately, there is no wrap around promenade deck. There are partial side promenades
on Decks 6 and 7, but they do
not wrap around in the front or in the back. Most of the decking on the ship is beautiful
teakwood. The solarium pool has a
tile floors which, unlike other ships we've been on (e.g. Grandeur of the Seas), is not
slippery when wet. Celebrity's
designers got it right. Other areas have a rubber composite coating, which is kept in
perfect condition, showing no wear.
The food on the Galaxy was wonderful. For breakfast we always went to the Oasis Café. We
ordered fresh omelets on
several occasions. We also had blintzes, which were great. Unique on the ship from others
we had been on, the staff serves
almost all the buffet items to you. They are not left out, to be picked through by earlier
passengers.
Service in the Oasis Café was second to none. Celebrity ships are the only ones where
staff will come up to the buffet line
and carry children's trays to tables. That has become our benchmark for great service. We
have not seen it on Royal
Caribbean, Norwegian or Majesty Cruise Lines. Only Celebrity pays that level of attention.
Excellent!
We only had lunch on the ship one day. That was Sunday, our day at sea. The buffet was
good, not great, but good. It was
comparable to the buffets on Royal Caribbean. In addition to the hot items and cold meats,
salads and vegetables, there
was a hot carvery item. Desserts, which looked great, really were not. They were OK, but
that's about it.
On all other days, we spend lunchtime snorkeling. We typically went out late morning,
returned to the ship around 3-4:00 in
the afternoon, and had pizza and frozen yogurt at 4:00 in the Solarium Pool and Oasis
Café.
At dinner we were seated at a table for just the four of us. On the Royal Majesty we were
at a table for four, and did not
make any friends on the cruise. Since then, we've always requested large tables with other
kids. Unfortunately, we were
back at a table for four again. But, on both sides, and even at other tables close by,
there were families with children similar
ages to ours. We were seated in the upper level, on the port side of the ship.
Food in the Orion Dining Room for dinner was wonderful. The Fillet Mignon and lobster
great. The lobster was nice and firm,
almost crisp. Not soft and mushy like we've had on other ships. We also liked the chilled
soups. There were some unique
items such as pasta with escargot and scallops, plus there were nice rack of lamb and veal
dishes. Vegetables were not
over cooked. Salads were not up to par with those on the Century. The lettuce wasn't as
fresh as it should have been.
Deserts in the Orion Dining Room were better than those in the Oasis Café. Especially
good were the tiramisu and the
crepes. There was a kid's menu. And kids could place a special order (like chicken
fingers) for the next evening even if it
was not on the menu. Overall the food was wonderful. I would rate it superior to the food
on Royal Caribbean and Norwegian
Cruise Line.
Service in the Orion Dining Room was superb. Our waiter, Allan was excellent, as was his
assistant. Allan spent considerable
time with our children, and, even personally made 'peanut butter and jelly' sandwiches for
our 'fussy eaters' a few evenings.
The Maitre d', visited us nightly, to see how things were. One evening, even the head chef
visited ours and other's tables.
Since we attended early sitting, dinner was at 6:00 p.m. And the ship usually left port at
that same time. Every evening, there
was a very noticeable vibration as the side thrusters were activated. Everything in the
dining room rattled until the
maneuvers were completed and the ship began moving forward.
Sunday, which was our first full day on the ship, was our only day at sea. We awoke late
(after 9:00 a.m.) and went to
breakfast in the Oasis Café. Afterward, we explored most of the ship. We checked out the
shops, the pools, the casino, the
theater, the movie theater, the library and all the other nooks and crannies. And we
picked up a copy of the trivia sheet from
the library and tried our luck. We love the daily trivia on Celebrity ships, because the
daily winner gets a small prize.
In the afternoon, after lunch in the Oasis Café, we had made arrangements (on the
Internet) to meet fellow rec.travel.cruises
(r.t.c.) posters Julia and Rock, and their families. We met at 2:00 in the afternoon in
the Stratosphere Lounge. Interestingly,
had we never met on-line at r.t.c., and arranged a meeting on the ship, we would have met
Julia's family anyway, since her
family was at the table right next to us in the Orion Dining Room.
After talking for a while, our kids (Julia's two daughters, Lauren and Kathleen, and our
daughter Lara) went swimming in the
solarium pool. We continued to chat further and discussed our plans for the week. While
the girls swam, Linda and Jonathan
went to see the movie playing in the Movie Theater.
Sunday was also the day of the Captain's Cocktail Party, and our first formal night. So we
dressed in our best formal outfits.
Jonathan and I both wore bow ties, me with my black suit and formal shirt. That evening we
also posed for the mandatory
formal night photos. We also stopped at the library to discover that we didn't win the
written trivia contest.
Later that evening, we decided to plan our next day in port. We chose to go snorkeling at
Anse-Chastinet in St. Lucia. At
night, I placed a note on the doors of Julia, Rock and Roland, inviting them to join us
(only if they wanted to, no obligation)
on our trip.
Monday morning we awoke (at around 6:00 am) to the sound of heavy vibration. It was the
same sound as in the dining
room, from activating the side thrusters. We were docking in St. Lucia early in the
morning. We quickly fell back to sleep and
woke up later in the morning. We went to breakfast again in the Oasis Café, and
afterward, packed up our snorkeling
equipment. We left the ship at 10:30 and met Julie's husband, Warren and their kids, who
decided to go with us. We talked
to a taxi driver who told us it would cost $30 per person to go to Anse-Chastinet. When
questioned about the cost, he said
that it was one and a half hours each way. With our kids, that was too far, so instead we
chose to go to Marigot Bay. It was
only about a 20 minute ride - much better for us.
Marigot Bay is very pretty. It was the location where a number of scenes from different
movies, including Superman 2, were
filmed. The snorkeling wasn't very good, but the kids had a great time in the calm waters.
There was a large coconut palm
tree hanging at the edge of the water with a long rope attached to it, and the kids had
fun holding onto the rope, running out
over the water and letting go. There were a few scraped knees at the end of the day
though. But the kids had a great time.
One of the locals even came up and cut up some coconuts, for a fee of course, so the kids
could drink some coconut milk
and eat some fresh coconut. But when we left, he came up to us and gave us a beautiful
conch shell.
We got back to the ship around 3:00 in the afternoon and changed out of our bathing suits.
We went for pizza and frozen
yogurt, and later changed for dinner. Monday was informal night. After dinner we went to
see the magician in the Theater.
He was great. After, we went to the team trivia contest in the Rendezvous Lounge. We
invited a couple from Ottawa to join
us. We didn't win, although we came close. Trivia became one of our favorite activities on
the ship, both the daily sheet in
the library, and the nightly contest in the Rendezvous Lounge.
Tuesday we docked Barbados. It was our favorite new port, although we still like St. John
more, but we had been to St. John
before. We decided to go snorkeling at Folkstone Underwater Park. After breakfast in the
Oasis Café, we packed up our
equipment and went to shore. We talked to a taxi driver who confirmed that our choice was
a good one for snorkeling. It was
about a 15-minute drive. We rented 2 beach chairs from the young man in charge, who then
showed us the best areas for
snorkeling. We saw quite a few fish. There is a reef very close to shore in very shallow
water, with easy access. It was easy
to take the kids with us to the reef.
We again returned to the ship around 3:00 in the afternoon. This time Lara and I went back
onto the ship, but Linda and
Jonathan decided to continue on in the taxi and went to see the underground cavern on the
island. Jonathan is taking
geology in school (6th grade) and found the stalactites and stalagmites fascinating.
Dinner on Tuesday was casual. After dinner, we went to the Repeater's Cocktail Party, and
then went to the Trivia Contest.
Our friends from Ottawa joined us again. Again no luck winning.
Wednesday was Martinique. We had decided to go snorkeling at Anse Mitan. After breakfast
and packing up the snorkeling
gear, we left the ship. There was a ferry that left for the other side of the harbor (to
Pointe du Boit and Anse Mitan) a few
blocks from the ship. We just walked over and rode the ferry across the harbor, to Pointe
du Boit. When we arrived at the
other dock, there were no signs for Anse Mitan. So we walked along a path that indicated
snorkeling, and came upon a
beach. Our first sight was a young lady selling bathing suits. She was topless. She would
even model the various bathing
suits she was selling by trying them on there. Our 9 year old daughter got a big kick out
of it. She did wonder though, why if
she had all those suits, that she didn't just put one on. But this was Martinique.
We made a several futile attempts to find out how to get to Anse Mitan. But when we
couldn't get anyone to understand our
question, or explain how to get there, we just stayed at the beach where we were. The
snorkeling was good near the stone
jetties in the water. I even saw a large barracuda. Unfortunately, my underwater camera
was up on the beach. By the time I
got my camera, the barracuda was gone.
After returning to our ship, we went to dinner, to the evening show, and finally to the
trivia contest. Our friends from Canada
didn't come. So, we invited a new couple to join us. They were from Mississippi. Our luck
wasn't much better. Again we didn't
win. After trivia, it was a walk around the ship at night, and off to bed.
Thursday we were in Antigua. Our taxi driver suggested that we go to Long Bay for
snorkeling. It was about a 20 minute ride
across the island. There was a reef at the beach about 50 yards off shore. There were also
about 100 kindergarten age
kids at the beach - on a class trip. They were there with their teachers. Although a bit
noisy, they stayed close to shore. The
snorkeling was good. While there were not a lot of fish, the coral was very colorful.
There was quite a bit of new coral
growing. Most of it was high and broke the surface of the water. You snorkeled down 'alley
ways' in the coral reef.
After returning to the ship, it was off to dinner and the evening show. It was the Cirque
du Galaxy. Some of the acts were
good, while I found others boring. After the show it was again trivia. Our friends from
Mississippi again joined us. We did
great. We tied for first place. I won second place in a run-off. We won Celebrity visors.
Yes. Victory at last, even if it was
second place.
Friday we docked in St. Thomas. Having been to St. Thomas twice before, we decided to go
the Trunk Bay in St. John. Our
first time in St. Thomas, we went to Coki Beach. It was OK. But the second time to St.
Thomas, we went to Trunk Bay, which
we found to be one of the most beautiful places we had ever seen. No contest. We were
going back to St. John.
Our ship was docked at the pier next to the Havensight Mall. We were first in line, with
the Rhapsody of the Seas and Dawn
Princess behind us.
After breakfast, we went for the trivia sheet. Again, we gave it our best shot. After we
got our gear together, we left the ship
and took a taxi to Red Hook, the ferry over to St. John, and a taxi to Trunk Bay. We were
joined by a family going to
Sapphire Beach, and a nervous a young man who was by himself. He wanted to go snorkeling
for the first time. We let him
tag along with us, and showed him 'the ropes.' We convinced the family to go to St. John
with us instead of Sapphire Beach.
After paying our $4 per adult US National Park entrance fee, we proceeded into the park
only to come up to a sign that said
that the water was rough, and visibility poor. Bummer!
We would have to make the best of it. As we approached the beach through the woods, we
heard waves crashing on the
beach. Last time there the water was very calm. But not this time. I went out into the
water with our nervous friend and
showed him a few things to practice in shallow water. Then I went out into deeper water
toward the underwater trail. Visibility
wasn't good, but as I got out to the coral reef area, there was less sand on the bottom
that the waves were churning up, and
the visibility improved. But it was still rough.
Meanwhile, the kids stayed close to shore, and had fun in the waves. When I returned, I
found that Linda had been knocked
over by a wave and landed on her hand. It was sore, but she could move her fingers, and
make a fist, even though it hurt to
do so. We stayed a little longer, and eventually went back to the ship. We had arranged
for our taxi drivers to pick us back
up. Our trips worked smoothly.
Upon our return to the ship, we made an ice pack for Linda's hand. Again, and for the last
time on board, we had pizza and
frozen yogurt for a late lunch. But after eating, Jonathan and I went for a short walk off
the ship and took the Tram to the top
of the hill by the dock. We wore our Celebrity Visors from the trivia contest the night
before. We got some great pictures of
the ship. After we returned, we check out the results of the written trivia contest in the
library and discovered that we had
WON! Yes. Our prize was a lapel pin with the Celebrity =X= logo on it.
After celebrating, we went to our last dinner on board. While talking to our friends, we
mentioned what had happened to
Linda's hand. The doctor (actually surgeon) at the table next to Julia's looked at Linda's
hand and said there was a chance
she could have a broken bone in it. He suggested that we get it X-rayed when we got home.
Soon it was time to pack. Linda did the best she could with her ice pack on one hand. We
packed all the clothes just in time
to go out to purchase a few last T-shirts and go the Trivia Contest for the last time.
None of our previous partners showed
up. Jonathan and I played by ourselves. We didn't do very well. After I brought Jonathan
back to the cabin, it was time for
one last walk around the ship at night. Then it was off to bed and debarkation the next
morning.
Saturday we awoke to our wake up call at 7:00 am. We had breakfast in the Oasis Café, and
picked up our carry on bags
from our cabin. Being Captain's Club members, we were given tags with #2 on them. We were
among the first groups off the
ship, around 8:45 in the morning. We bid the Galaxy farewell, picked up our bags and
checked them at the airline ticket
agents at the dock. Soon we were in the bus, headed to the airport. Our vacation was over.
The Galaxy is a beautiful ship. It is for passengers who appreciate great service, a sleek
and fashionable ship, which is
stylish rather than glitzy, and who enjoy excellent food. But it is not for everyone.
Those seeking a more active experience or
wild times would be happier elsewhere. But for us, we fully appreciated what this
beautiful ship had to offer.
Overall, it was a wonderful Spring Break vacation.
P.S. Linda had her hand X-rayed when we got home, and it wasn't broken. Great news after a
great cruise.
