We have recently returned from a much anticipated cruise aboard the Galaxy with some friends. I'd like to pass on our review with both positive and
negatives comments. We arrived in San Juan from Portland, Oregon without the problems that some encounter with the airlines. We were
disappointed to arrive at the ship without getting the customary boarding photo. The area we entered the ship was without fanfare, just the elevator
area, another disappointment after entering onto other ships into the breathtaking atrium section. The ship on the outside is very impressive with the
white and navy blue and big 'X' on the rear stack. The inside decor is very modern and understated but I don't care for the modern art style. I
always find it interesting that 3 stripes of different color paint on a canvas is considered a work of art. I really enjoy the atrium area on ships, but this
one was unusual because you really didn't get a good view of it from any level. There was a hideous piece of art? there at the bottom level under
the Grand Foyer sign. It looked like an aqua colored blob with purplish-blue spots on it. UGH. I do have to say that the ship is very clean and always
smelled wonderful. Our cabin was a category 2, mini-suite with veranda and again we were disappointed with the lackluster decor, faded looking,
ugly picture on the wall (our friends in a category 7 cabin had the same ugly picture) and somewhat cramped quarters. We expected more for a
mini-suite and what we paid for it. Having a veranda is always great, though. The bathroom was nice with a roomy shower, great shower head and
lots of water pressure. Storage space was adequate. The one area that Celebrity claims to be excellent in and is, is the food, primarily in the dining
room. The dinners were really fantastic. Don't miss the Creme Broule for dessert! It is amazing how they can serve the caliber of food you'd find in a
fine restaurant for so many people. Our waiter and busboy were attentive and entertaining. Before our cruise I'd read reviews on this ship that
mentioned a vibration felt in the dining room. This was really noticable to us, too, especially since we had the early seating and we would be leaving
port during dinner. The quartet playing dinner music at the top of the stairs was very nice and the Maitre d' was the most pleasant and people
friendly as we've encountered before. The buffet food in the Oasis Cafe was just OK as was the pizza. They use pre-made crust, not like the delicious
hand tossed pizza on Carnival. The theatre on this ship is beautiful and every seat is a good one. No pillars in the way or any obstructed views. The
Cirque de Galaxy is and excellent show. Elliot Finkel is an amazing pianist, but the other entertainment was just OK. The cruise director, Don Fluke,
isn't the normal cruise director. Maybe this is a new job for him, but he seemed a little nerdy. We usually got off the ship in the morning as soon as
we could and I was surprised again that the photographers weren't always there before the people got off. A couple of times after we got off the
ship, then they would show up. The quality of many of the photos wasn't always very good anyway. Embarkation/Disembarkation went very smoothly.
Catalina Island was a nice relaxing day on the beach. Martinique should be dropped from the itinerary, especially since you can get perfume at the
other ports. The rest of the islands are wonderful. We had nice time, but Celebrity's claim to 'exceed expectations' didn't exceed our's as we had
hoped. Other than the food in the dining room, we felt that we didn't get anymore for our money than on Carnival (we had a wonderful time on the
Imagination and nice large cabins, too!) or Norweigan Cruise Line, which was really surprising to us since Celebrity is supposed to be a couple
notches above those cruise lines. Our waiter, cabin steward, and all the other offerings were good but certainly not better than on other ships we've
been on. We hope to try the new Radisson Paul Gauguin to Tahiti next time!
