My wife and I chose Celebrity because of its 5-star reputation, for food and service, but
the cruise came up a bit short on both points. The food in the main
dining room was the quality of a good hotel banquet, not of the upscale restaurant to
which it was compared in the brochures. Service in the restaurant
was strained, as though there were not enough staff to go around. But the dining room
experience was pleasant overall, especially after the waiter and
wine stewardess were told, point-blank, about our expectations for service (not to pick-up
extra flatware while a course was in progress; deliver ordered
wine quick enough to enjoy it with the food it was intended for). The restaurant itself is
pleasantly decorated, on two levels, but be sure to opt for a table
near the music if you wish to enjoy it while dining.
We found our room, 9129 on the Vista Deck, with a verandah, somewhat small but otherwise
comfortable. The verandah is a definite plus -- worth the
extra cost. Our stewardess was conscientious and performed all the tasks we expected
without fault.
My wife loved the spa, especially the hydrospa pool, a Celebrity exclusive. I thought use
of the basic hydrospa pool should have been included in the base
price of the cruise, but each guest who wishes to do so is charged $11.00 per day for the
privilege.
The private island day at Catalina Island was unpleasant, not for the tendering so much as
for the crowds and long lines for lunch. Speaking of tendering,
the seas at Catalina became rough, and the journey from the ship to the shore, and return,
was eventful, but no more so than should have been expected
under the circumstances.
We found the show room entertainment to be adequate, but not at all outstanding, with the
noteworthy exception of the comic voice impersonator. His
show was outstanding, and the audience showed its pleasure with a standing ovation. The
show room itself, however, was quite pleasant. Bench row
seating was comfortable, and there did not seem to be a bad seat in the house.
Deck service was unobtrusive and the waiters were friendly. Beverages were always
available, but none of the staff pestered guests with offers of drinks,
as is typical on other lines. I found this aspect of the cruise most enjoyable.
In conclusion, my wife and I were mildly disappointed in our expectations of a 5-star
cruising experience. Nevertheless, the ship was sparkling clean,
modern, stable and well equipped. We found our cruise on Galaxy pleasant, overall, and can
recommend it to those who want a modern, near-luxury
experience with above average amenities and reasonable service.
