This was a first cruise for my husband and I, and as a result of the good experience, I am
sure that we will go on more cruises in the future. We went at
the urging of my cerebral palsied brother, who cannot hear or talk. He wanted to
experience the total solar eclipse at sea, which was on the day after his
50th birthday. Within a few days, I think nearly everyone, passengers and crew alike, knew
who he was, and their friendliness was the high point for us.
The ship felt like a small town, in spite of being so big! The drawbacks for us were that
the dining room was too formal, we liked the first night out when you
could sit anywhere, but after that we felt pressured to sit in the same place all the
time, and we did not discover that my brother could have been eating
pizza on one of the outdoor decks instead of going to dinner. The recommended tips for the
serving staff that amounted to about $30 per person were a
shock to us, but I guess that is something seasoned cruise patrons are aware of. The ship
had made fairly good accommodations for those seriously
interested in the eclipse, and had the T-shirts in the shop before we docked permanently!
(That was important for this group) My brother is a casino fan,
and dealing to a deaf player can be a challenge, but the staff at the shipboard casino
were really neat with him, and they really made us feel welcome. He
even came home with more money than he started with! (Can't say the same for my husband
and I, but loosing it was fun.) I was not expecting the
entertainment programs in the evening, and was sceptical about the likely quality, and
found myself pleasently surprised. It was entertaining, and much
better quality than I had expected.
