My wife and I took the Horizon for our honeymoon after extensive research both with our
travel agent and on the internet. We had been on the
Carnival Jubilee in 1997, which we enjoyed because it was a lot of fun, but for our
honeymoon, we decided that we wanted something a little more
elegant. I think that we got exactly what we wanted. The food on the Horizon was
absolutely perfect! Only one flaw: on our eleven day cruise, both
lobster and prime rib were served only one time, both at the same meal! (The Captain's
Farewell Gala). The buffet breakfast and lunch were very
good, as were the midnight buffets! Dinner was always a treat, even though a little
knowledge of the French language would be helpful when
reading the menu. It's true, the cruise was that wonderful - I'm complaining because we
only had lobster for dinner once! What a perfect
honeymoon! The ship was absolutely the cleanest it could be. My wife and I actually looked
to try and find something which needed polishing, or
maybe was stained, but we couldn't do it. The ports of call were great with the exception
of LaGuaira, Venezuela. I didn't talk to one person at all
who enjoyed this port. My advice to those who take this cruise: stay on the ship. That's
actually what the crew told us to do! We went ashore
anyways, because the weather was perfect and we wanted to find a local beach to lounge
around on, but it was small, crowded, and we felt unsafe.
(And it cost us $30 for the cab fare.) The other ports were wonderful, especially Grenada
(take the excursion to the National Forest!) and Barbados
(wonderful beaches!) And, yes, it is true, save all of your shopping for St. Thomas. It is
much cheaper than any other port (except for the wonderful
spices on Grenada!) As for the crew: absolutely wonderful, including the waiters, busboys,
cabin stewards, bartenders, and entertainment hosts. We
felt like we were friends with most of the crew by the end of the journey. We did not see
any rudeness, sarcasm, or poor behavior by any
crewmember. One caveat, however: the average age of passengers seemed to be mid-sixties.
This didn't bother us because we were on our
honeymoon and were totally enthralled with each other (gross, sorry!), but I think that
young, energetic passengers would have more 'fun' on a
Carnival cruise. But this cruise was wonderful, and my wife almost cried when it was over
- even after eleven days!
