My first cruise to Alaska w/Mom for her 75th birthday. We had a wonderful time. The
Mercury is a beautiful ship -
clean, comfortable and well appointed. The scenery in Alaska is breathtaking. I usually do
everything on a cruise -
dancing lessons, wine tasting, etc. This time, Mother Nature won out. We did the
northbound route starting in
Vancouver. Glad I did my own air, as Celebrity's air was into in Seattle and bus to
Vancouver. Stayed two nights in
Vancouver, which is a lovely city, very easy to walk around, and quite clean. The Four
Seasons Hotel, along with
their restaurant, Chartwell's, was a great prelude to our cruise..
Our cabin was well appointed, yet a bit smaller than I imagined. We had a similar cabin on
the Rhapsody that was
simply laid out better. Since we had the beds separated, it was rather tight walking
around. There was plenty of
storage space and nice terry robes were provided. The hairdryer in the bathroom was rather
lame, but the shower
was super. Never had such a large shower on a cruise ship before. The health club is
large, with plenty of
treadmills and weight circuit. There are plenty of hot tubs, and the aft pool has a
retractable roof, a nice thing to
have while in Alaska. The Palm Springs Cafe by this pool had good food. The food and
service in the dining room
was the best. We had a table by a window and I was happy that they left the curtains open
during dinner time so
we didn't have to miss all the scenery passing by while we were dining.
I highly recommend a helicopter tour out of Juneau to the icefields. We went on ERA, which
was recommended to
me by a fellow cruise reviewer. The flight, and landing on a glacier, was the highlight of
our cruise.
Rafting Keystone Canyon was another thrill (out of Valdez - the town of Valdez in not
worth seeing). Its not for the
faint of heart, as the rapids were in the class 3 category. It was a wild ride, on a
beautiful river (nothing like getting
splashed in the face with 35 degree water to wake you up). They had a photographer on the
shore along the way.
I just got my photos back, and still can't believe I really did it! I also went on the
Orca beach nature hike. Didn't see
whales, but spotted some seals and had a very knowledgable guide on the trail thru the
woods. Getting to the hike
site was a rough ride on a zodiak. I thought it was a blast, but was glad my Mom didn't
want to come along since
she would have killed me afterwards (some people were hanging on with a death-grip!).
We also did the post cruise tour of Denali Park, which is operated by GreyLines. If anyone
wants info on that let
me know. Denali is worth seeing, but I would not use GreyLine.

This was our second trip with Celebrity. They were made for us. We are within 5 years of
retirement and want to
do and see a thing or two before we can't get around any more. We love to travel, dance,
worship, and dine. The
Mercury has all that and more. We have lived in Europe and traveled over a million miles
and a Celebrity Cruise is
the best value we have come across with the exception of the train ride from Zurich to
Innsbrook. The Mercury was
new when we took it and had a mixture of veteran and rookie crew. The experienced staff
were in the right places
and spent extra time training the new help. The food and entertainment were the best.
Future stars and stars from
the past formed the entertainment. On an earlier cruise aboard the Zenith, we saw the
Magician Valentino, who
went on to be the Masked Magician with network specials. On this cruise we saw a musical
comedian who did
impressions who we later saw on a Showtime special. We highly recommend the Mercury and
Celebrity. We are
booked aboard the Galaxy in September for the Inside Passage. We can't wait!

My wife is extremely affected by motion sickness. We took this cruise (the inside
passage)as a test of her ability to
resist sea sickness. The first morning on board, she would not even open the curtains on
the window. She didn't
want to see the water rushing by. By the next day she realized that it was so smooth it
was difficult to imagine one
was on a shop. Even one evening, in choppy water, with the ship, for some reason, moving
at a faster than usual
pace, there was virtually no impression of motion. In fact we now comment that our next
cruise will be anywhere the
Mercury goes. Our cabin steward was phenomenal. I swear he was hovering in the passage way
just waiting for us to
leave so he could come in - change the towels, refill the carafe and put fresh ice in the
ice bucket. My wife bought a
small stuffed husky at one of our stops and left it on a table in the cabin.
That evening, when we came into the cabin,
after he had folded down the bedding, the dog was sitting on the pillow with the nightly
candy in its paws. The food
was excellent at dinner and the breakfast and lunch buffet. My wife is a tea drinker, but
only Lipton. The first night
when they brought the box of all the fancy teas, she asked for Lipton. It was brought
promptly and for the rest of the
trip when she orderd tea, there was Lipton in the box. There were two things that puzzled
me however - First, at
dinner, they are serving a 5 course meal that would probably be $50 or more a person at
any restaurant but, if you
want a coke, it's extra. They bring it and take your shipboard credit card to charge for
it. Second - They serve, all
over the ship, instant coffee. When I tasted it I told my wife it was instant- she told me
I was crazy they wouldn't do
that on an upscale ship.
Later I watched them pour the concentrate from a large bottle into the smaller bottle
in the
'coffee maker'. The coffee is not made from ground coffee. The cruise was fine - pleasant
and relaxing. However, the
towns in Alaska and the shops and the salmon and the seals all look alike - Sort of 'Seen
one - seen 'em all' The
prices of the tours from the ship are substantially higher than seem to to be the same
tours bought on the dock at
each port. In a couple of ports there were three cruise ships thare at the same time but
there was no shortage of
tour opportunities, even though we did not make a point of getting an early start at any
port. Overall the ship - the
tour - the itinerary were exactly what we were looking for. Plenty to do but no rushing -
no pressure - a great
immaculately clean ship. It was a fine experience.

We traveled as a family with our two teenage daughters. We chose the Denali tour before
the cruise departed
Seward on Friday. We flew into Anchorage on Monday where we were greated by the Travel
Company and brought
to their hotel Inlet Suites. All the rooms are Suites, which was nice for a family. The
next morning we boarded a bus
for Denali. The Travel Company Reps do a nice job with your luggage loading everything
from your room to the bus
so essentially you do little luggage handling, which is great! The bus ride to Denali is
around 5 hours with
commentary on the scenery and towns the entire way.
We were with around 20 other people, half being kids in the
10 to 15 age range and very well behaved. In Denali we stayed at the River Lodge in new
rooms. The first afternoon
is on your own to either white water raft (brrr), hike or go into the little town to shop
and eat--which is what we did.
Princess has their won hotel close to the shops and resturants, so if you like to be in
the action, you might want to
chose Princess. We stayed a 10 minute free bus ride away. Wednesday morning arrived with
sunshine, the first in 10
days, which was great for our viewing of Mt. McKinley in Denali. We took an 8 hour tour of
Denali park on their
school bus tours (no cars allowed) and it was awesome. I must recommend this tour to
everyone.
We saw many
grizzly bears (here they are called brown bear), fox, moose, caribou and the wonderful
mountains. Thursday was
rainy again for the 8 hour train ride back to Anchorage. A long ride, but very scenic. I
wondered about the Holland
American and Princess trains, having heard they were luxurious. I found out that the train
is 5 or 6 cars on the front
with a dining car, observation car and gift shop for regular travelers--very nice seating
by the way with several tables
to play cards on. The Princess cars are hooked onto the back. I would travel the way we
did again, because you can
get up and walk around thru all the different cars. Friday we took the Anchorage city tour
that came with our trip. We
visited the museum, stopped at a wildlife park and enjoyed the best scenery we had seen
yet traveling to Seward
and yes it was raining again, but not hard.
We arrived at the ship, boarded within minutes and saw our inside cabin,
which was very nice. I am glad we chose this catagory because it never gets totally dark
in Alaska this time of year.
So we slept like babies in the darker room, very quiet, too. Plenty of room for four
people if you are neat. This room
had the most drawers and closet space of any cruise we have taken. The cruise was
flawless, clean, food excellent,
help relaxed and ready to assist your every need. They had a local gal who would tell you
over the loud speaker
about every port. We liked the information she gave. If you look you can see porpoise over
the sides of the ship.
Whales if you are lucky. I would not book any tours off of the ship, you can book the same
ones off of the ship for
cheaper! Don't be alarmed that you won't find any, because you will. The only one that you
should book off the ship
from our experience is the fishing tours.
Our friends fished out of Ketchikan and almost didn't find someone to take
them out. They caught over 80 pounds of salmon. I always book early dining, but on this
cruise late is better. You
want to sit and look at the scenery instead of going to the shows. There is very little
ship movement, so sea sickness
is not a problem with this ship. The teenagers had a marvelous time meeting many friends.
My 15 year old daughter
said the kids on this ship were mainly non-smokers and better behaved than on the
Carribean tours we have taken
in the past. She said they were not as interested in drinking alchoholic beverages. We
would travel on Celebrity
again. I loved that they don't sound the bells and give announcents constantly. Also I
like the tv camera that shows
the outside scenery day and night on a tv channel. Good touch! Great ports, try the hiking
and bike riding. I didn't
think the ports compared to Carribean ports at all! They are cleaner, they don't say 'hey
pretty lady--buy this' and if
you ask how far town is they say 3 blocks and you can skip the taxi. Each port is
different and fun to explore. The
disembarkation was smooth. We chose to get our own ride to the airport (take the taxi--for
4 people it is less than 1/2
the cost than the bus). We took the Vancouver trolley tour. It was wonderful.

We (6 related adults) thoroughly enjoyed our 11-nite repositioning cruise
(Vancouver-Inside Passage-San
Francisco) aboard the lovely Mercury. Highly recommended vessel & itinerary! I would
not hesitate going again.
The restaurant staff was a highlight of the trip. Our waiter (Dariusz), Busboy (Daniel),
Wine Steward (Jesus), and
Maitre d' (Jose) were personable, attentive, and just plain fun to be with. We will
treasure many our good times in
the Manhattan Restaurant ... and they helped make them possible.
The food was *extremely* good. However, I have to admit, I am a bit of a "food
snob" and don't believe that it was
fully five-star as expected ... but only two of us felt this way.
We splurged on spa services. Personally, it was another highlight of the trip, as it added
to the cruise's luxurious,
relaxing feel. With four sea-days, it really was a great way to unwind and spend some
time. We did not book spa
packages through our travel agent, but I would recommend doing so in order to save a few
$$. This is what I will do
next time.
The cabin was well appointed, but noisy! We were near service areas -- immediately outside
and below the cabin. It
made for some long, noisy nights. We know better for next time.
Most crew were very accommodating, but there were those surly few that could manage to put
a damper on your
day if you let them. We did let management know of difficulties we had with several staff.
All in all, it was a delightful trip. I look forward to sailing Celebrity again.

This is my first Caribbean cruise, I choose Celebrity over other cruise line is because
they are well known for their food,
their crusine. I study a lot of cruise guide, like the Berlitz guide for cruise, they rank
Celebrity 5 stars, over those well
known cruise line like Royal Caribbean and Princess , as a result, I go with celebrity,
also for the reason of my wife is
quite picky with food. We arrive at the Miami Airport at about 10:15am in the morning, and
unbelievably, the Celebrity
guide is already right there at the gate, I was impressed since some people who join the
Carnival is still looking for their
representative around me, later, I keep heard announcement from the airport said something
like - Carnival cruise rep,
please come to customer service courter- they even page Princess rep once. First
impression is very important,
Celebrity give me a very good one.
It took us 30 minutes of wait time to get on our coach, and it take another 30 minutes to
get to the pier, where we saw
our giant ship, the Mercury, The ship looks brand new from close range, later I found out
the ship has just past 2 years
of service time, but I give the ship a 95 sanitation score in the maintainence.
Embarkation was unbelievably smoothly, it
just took us about 30 minutes, we are on the ship. everything was so smooth and efficient.
our cabin is #1153 on the
penthouse deck with a small veranda, there was good enough drawers for me, my wife and my
3 years old kid, the
shower was amazing, good, strong and hot, much better than the one at my home, I have
experience some weak, warm
but not hot and small shower on my other cruise, so this is wonderful. The Manhattan
Restaurant, our main dinning
room just one floor up from our cabin, very convenience, waiter and bus boy is responsive,
they serve our little kid
amazing, met all kind of special request, they also are alway within distance from our
table, any time we need them, they
are always there to serve, the restaurant Manager, Mario is world class, funny,
professional and happy, He made things
happen, but unfortunately, he told us that this might be his last contract since his son
is 14 already, and he would like to
spend more time with him and his wife. if that happens, it will be a big lost for the
Celebrity. Mario is everywhere,
everybody loves him, it shows on the captain farewell dinner, when his name was annouced,
he got the one and only
one standing ovation, we are not surprise.
Cruise director Mr Canon, he has done a fine job, but not outstanding, He have to be more
involve, but he sings well,
good for him. Restaurant food is very good as expected, the menu is very French style, not
one dish is duplicated, the
desert was my favourite, have the feeling of expensive, they also have some wine steward
to give recommandation to
wine lovers who like to have professional suggestion. I don't think any cruise line at
this class still offer this service, I
gave high marks as well. They have kid's programme where I can get my little one over to
and can have some wonderful
time with my wife, I am not in a good position to comment on the kids programme since I'm
not a kid, but base on my kid
keep pushing me to let her go to the programme I believe it should me a successful one. If
I have to give some negative
thoughts on this ship, I believe the Mercury have to improve their show entertainment,
they are not bad at all, but is not
up to the standard of the food and their service show us.
other disappointment is the shopping, basically, there is nothing to shop, the shops on
the ship gave you no attraction
to shop, and you know what I mean, all the shops are boring. If they have improvement on
the above 2 areas, they will
be unbeatable in its class.
any discussion, please send me email at vinchow@ipoline.com.

The Mercury was a beautiful ship, and very elegant. Our cabin was very comfortable, and
the shower was the biggest I
have ever been in on a cruise ship before. I didn't feel like I was taking a shower with
the shower curtain. Our cabin
steward was wonderful and very accommodating.
The food was incredible. We ate in the dining room every chance we could, because there
was a great difference
between the buffet food and the dining room. I can't say enough about the food, it was
awesome. The midnight buffets
were disappointing, and some nights, there wasn't a buffet, just 'gourmet bites'. I was
mad about the lack of drinks
available. I think the water/ice machine, and tea should be available all the time, and
they weren't. We had to go back to
our room if we wanted any water to drink, when the buffet was closed or when the pizza
place was shut down. Even on
tex mex night, with spicy food, there wasn't a drink machine on, just the bar staff
parading through with soda to be
purchased, which I thought was pretty lousy for a five star ship. I don't drink soda, so
that really ticked me off.
The entertainment was really good. We went on Royal Caribbean last year and found a much
more livelier crowd on
that ship. I think the Mercury was too laid back. There weren't too many passengers
participating in the activities they
had scheduled.
I enjoyed the cruise on the Mercury, and might even sail with them again sometime, but if
you want a lot of action and
participation, go with Royal Caribbean.
