This was our first cruise and it exceeded our expectations! When we first boarded the ship
we thought, this is nice,
but we dont need to cruise again. By the time the cruise was done, we
couldnt wait until our next cruise. We were
very surprised and pleased with our cabin. It was a lot larger than we thought it would be
and we both never slept
so well!
The staff was wonderful and attentive. They were very accommodating when we switched to
the main seating. The
dining room staff was terrific and we felt like royalty every night at dinner. The food at
dinner was fabulous. There
was ample selection and my sometimes-picky-eater husband always found something to eat and
was always happy
with his selection. By the second evening, our busboy would bring our after-dinner coffee
and decaf-tea without
even asking and our waiter remembered my food allergies and steered me clear of food I
should not eat.
We enjoyed the entertainment for the most part, although some of the shows were geared
more to an older crowd.
The pool deck was often crowded and it was hard to find lounge chairs near the pool, but
there was always
lounges available some where. We enjoyed the art auctions- it was a nice mid-afternoon
diversion.
Now, for the areas in need of improvement
First, I thought the lunches were terrible! They never seemed to have anything that
appealed to either of us. It was
too warm for the hot and heavy choices on the buffet, we got tired of the pasta bar, the
grill items were so-so (and I
dont eat meat, so there wasnt much of a selection), and the lunch we had in
the dining room was not good.
Luckily, breakfast, the afternoon tea, and dinner were all excellent.
Second, we thought that there wasnt enough information available on the excursions.
We went snorkling in
Cozumel and asked ahead of time if everything was included in the price and also asked if
there would be a place
to put our personal items while we were in the water. When we go there, we found that
there were, in fact, lockers,
but they cost extra. We wouldnt have minded if we were told in advance. On the trip
to Tulum we were also led to
believe that everything was included in the price of the tour. On the bus, however, we
were told that it costs extra to
take the tram to the site. We were never given the boxed lunch that was said to be
included, and our tour guide
and bus driver kept trying to sell us things. I felt as though Celebrity did a terrible
job in preparing us for the tours
and we did not appreciate being accosted and solicited with trinkets.
Finally, we were horribly disappointed with the airfare we purchased through the cruise
line. We got our tickets 10
days before our scheduled departure. The flight times were terrible and not direct. We
live in the Washington, DC
area so there are 3 airports we could fly out from, yet the cruise could only manage to
find a flight for us with a
change in Atlanta and a 2 hour lay-over. The return flight was also very late in the
evening. On our own, we found
better, direct flights at a cheaper price with less than 2 weeks before our departure
(which we booked). We learned
a valuable lesson
we will NEVER book our airfare with the cruise line when we depart
and arrive from the same
location within the US.
I must add, that despite the problems, we had a wonderful time. In fact, we were on the
cruise the week before
Hurricane Mitch hit the area we were in. It rained for the last 3 days of the cruise and
the water was very rough (it
was quite a rocky ride sometimes). That didnt stop us from enjoying the cruise and
looking forward to our next
cruise. We would definitely consider cruising on Celebrity again.

My wife and I just returned from an outstanding cruise to Cozumel, Calica (Cancun), and
Grand Caymon on Celebrity's
Mercury. We were most impressed with the overall quality and cleanliness of the ship, the
excellent service, the superb food,
and the amenities throughout the ship.
Except for a scratchy and pilled bed coverlet, we have few if any complaints about this
vacation. The ship is gorgeous but
not glitzy and overstated. Not one members of the staff and crew was anything but warm,
cordial and very helpful throughout
the trip. Our oceanview stateroom was very well designed with an huge number of drawers
and very ample closet space. We
especially appreciated the in-stateroom combination safe. The cabin service was excellent,
and the interactive TV was
helpful and enjoyable: We were able to play roulette and other games of chance via the TV
when we chose to do so, and we
could order our in-stateroom breakfasts and other snacks via the TV if we chose to do so.
An ice bucket and ice water was
refreshed in our stateroom frequently, as were the towels and other amenities.
An especially nice feature of this and other Celebrity Cruises is that blaring
announcements are not made over the ship's PA
system as occurs so often and so annoyingly on other ships we've sailed. Only during
muster drill and disembarkation is the
PA system used. Passengers get full information about activities, excursions, meal and
show times through the daily
newsletters provided in the staterooms. In one port, the Mercury was berthed next to a
Costa Cruises ship, and one could
hear nagging PA announcements being made all day long on the Costa ship.
The food, service and entertainment was superb througout this ship, whether in lounges,
various nightclubs, public areas or
in the magnificently equipped main showroom. Entertainments was Broadway quality or
better, and highly diversified. From
the highly versatile musical group Oaysis which performed daily on the pool deck and
elsewhere to musical duos to the
Mariachi band to the the a capalla quartet to to 50's and 60's style band to the supreme
ships orchestra to Partita, the
classically-orineted quartet, the entertainment was plentiful and wonderful.
Keep in mind that except for larger suites and some staterooms with verandas, virtually
all the staterooms on the ship are
the same size. So one need not buy a high category stateroom to have a non-cluastrophobic
vacation. Even the inside
cabins are great.
Embrakation and disembarkation was very quick and easy, without hassles.

This was our first cruise and we had an excellent time overall. We did have a few
complaints which I will get to later. To begin
with, we used the air/sea program and had no problems at all. When we arrived at port we
were given priority number 9, but
once they start calling numbers it goes by very quickly. When we went to check in and
begin boarding, we encountered a
very rude employee who asked us our cabin number. When I gave it to him, he kept insisting
it was wrong. When I finally
showed him our tickets, he sent us to the Pier Supervisor. Turns out, we were upgraded
from a category 8 cabin to a
category 4. It was a nice surprise (we booked 9 months in advance with another couple).
Our friends were also upgraded
and in the room right next to ours.
FOOD-The food was excellent wherever we went. Dinner was always amazing, and we were glad
we chose second
seating--others had to rush back onto the ship to get ready for the early dinner. There
was also plenty of variety on the
menu; we thought the salads and desserts were particularly good. At lunch, we liked to
visit the buffet and sit on the deck
behind the Palm Springs Pool--it was always uncrowded and peaceful. Also, they have a
homemade ice cream bar out
there--don't miss the homemade ice cream! Every afternoon, we also had the pizza (served
from 3:00-5:00) and then the
pastries (4:00-6:00). Everything was really great, except we we're really hungry for
dinner. We didn't go to any midnight
buffets--we were too stuffed! The service in the restaurants and cafes were excellent--our
waiters and busboys were
fantastic, and they work LONG hours. One complaint on the dining--they have free water,
iced tea, lemonade, and fruit
punch, but the cups are so small (like Dixie cups) that you either have to fill four of
them, or keep getting up for refills. We
found this a little irritating.
CABIN-Our cabin was small, but it had plenty of storage space, and the cabin steward kept
it immaculate. We kept our
valuables in the safe and had no problems at any time.
ENTERTAINMENT-This was the one area that was weak overall. The shows in the Celebrity
Theater were so bad, they were
embarrassing. We kept giving it a try, but every night we left after about ten minutes.
The comedian, Noodles Levenstein,
was just not funny, although the children in the audience thought he was hysterical. And
the shows put on by the Celebrity
Singers and Dancers were not even close to 'Broadway' quality as promised. We were very
disappointed and found other
places to spend our evenings. We really would have like to have spent more time in the
Navigator Club (one of the nicest on
the ship) but every night it was overrun with teenagers, used as the teen disco. This was
disappointing, as it was probably
the most unusual club spot on the ship. The singer Jan in the lounge was good; it was a
good spot to have a drink before or
after dinner. We went to one art auction, which was fun, but we were not overly impressed.
DAYS AT SEA-We spent three days in the Thalassotherapy pool in the spa--be warned! It
ruined our bathing suits! Also, if
you're going to spend more than a few minutes in that pool, put your hair up. My sister
and I were in there for over an hour
one day (trust me, it's excellent, you never want to get out!) and the minerals in the
water turn you hair to straw. There are
little signs saying your bathing suit may fade--but ours didn't fade, they all became
streaked and the fabric worn in places.
The spa appointments book fast--within hours of saililng. As far as relaxing, the poolside
was a little too loud with the band
playing, but we found the shuffleboard decks (with padded deck chairs) were a great place
to relax and read.
CASINO-If you've never gambled before, this is a great place to learn. The dealers are so
nice (they actually count your
cards for you, explain rules to you, wait patiently for you, etc). Low-pressure, which
made it even more fun.
SHORE EXCURSIONS-In Key West, we just walked around the town, and since you're only there
a very short time, this was a
good way to see everything. It was very crowded, but we managed to get a feel of the place
and stopped at a local bar near
the water and had a few drinks. In Grand Cayman, we went snorkeling with stingrays. If you
do this, definately book the
earliest trip--ours left at 7:30am and we were the first boat there--when we left, there
were at least four other boats and the
water was clogged with shrieking tourists. I was worried someone would get stung, but this
was very safe, although a little
creepy at first. We spent the rest of the day walking around town. In Cozumel, we took the
Fury Catamaran Snorkeling trip.
This was an excellent trip! The boat crew took us out for an hour snorkel. We then boated
out to an empty beach where they
had umbrellas, volleyball, rafts, and kayaks. We stayed for about an hour there. While on
the boat, the crew will try to get
you as drunk as possible!!! (After you snorkel, that is!) All the beer and margaritas you
can drink. Everyone was pretty
loaded by the end of the trip, since any time a crew member saw you empty-handed, they
shoved a Dos Equis at you! This
trip was a lot of fun. In Calica we went to Xcaret, which was great. There was so much to
see and do, you could easily spend
at least a day. The swimming and snorkeling was great, and we were able to go back to the
boat for lunch, and then return
to Xcaret. When we got back on the boat after Calica, my husband and I were on the deck
watching the boat leave, when a
taxi pulled up at the curb and two Mercury passengers jumped out, screaming 'Wait!' The
ship was already several hundred
yards from the pier, and it did not stop (granted, these people were 45 minutes late to
get back on board, their fault). Still,
we felt really sorry for them. About a half hour later, the captain came over the PA
system and announced that two
passengers missed the boat, and he sent tenders back to Calica to pick them up. Wow! Talk
about customer service! Still, I
wouldn't advise being late--we came to the conclusion that the only reason they did that
is because so many passengers
were on deck and witnessed this young couple screaming. Crew members we talked to said
they have never once waited for
passengers, or sent tenders for them. This was a first, and it was all anyone talked about
that night!
Our last complaint is this: there is one person on the ship whose job it is to get you to
go shopping at port. This obnoxious
practice was so aggravating--they kept recommending stores where you can get 'genuine
diamond earrings for $19.99' (I
mean, come on!). We felt this was tacky. When we got to each port, the cruise line
provides you with a map of the area.
However, instead of listing historical sites and other things to see, it listed
stores--and they were often the same from port to
port! Most of these stores sold junk, and we did not trust one thing the cruise line was
trying to pitch to us. It was very cheap
and tacky. We would have liked more educational information--not this excessive promotion.
The stores on board the ship
had a very limited selection as well.
Overall, we had an excellent time. This ship was beautiful, immaculate, and the staff was
excellent! Debarkation was smooth,
although there was a marked difference in the attitude of some employees on that last
day--they want you out, and they
want you out early. Our flight wasn't until 1:00, and we thought we might be able to sleep
in (until 8 or so) and have
breakfast then. Wrong! The last breakfast was served at 8:00, and they want you--and your
belongings--out of your room at
8:00. We only waited for about an hour to get off the ship, and had absolutely no problems
finding our luggage. The week
went by quickly, and even though this was only our first cruise, we would probably only
sail Celebrity again. Enjoy your trip!

My husband and I were originally booked for the week previous, on Royal Caribbean's
'Grandeur of the Seas'. We were
notified by E-Mail, that they put the ship in wet dock for two weeks to fix the engine. We
were told that we would get a full
refund and half off another cruise. However, we still haven't recived our money back! it's
been over four weeks. I got on the
phone, and called all the major cruise lines to find anything going to the Caribbean that
week. I got ahold of the
representative in charge of rerouting the Grandeur passengers, at R.C.C.L. and they said
they had one oceanview cabin
left on Celebrity's Mercury to the Western Caribbean for the week later. But, they
couldn't get us an air/ sea package. If we
could find air, we could go. They said they would try, but days later, they still had no
luck. Easter and Spring breakers! We
ended up having to go two days early, flying into the Miami airport and renting a car.
Driving to Fort Lauderdale, and staying
in a hotel on the beach. I had been on the Mercury before to Alaska, so I knew what a nice
ship she is. Port Everglades in
Fort Lauderdale is very nice. We drove by a day early to see what ships were in port. We
saw the Noordam, Sea Princess
and the Century. A few others from smaller lines, that I don't recall. The day we boarded
the ship was hectic. We had to take
the rental car back at the airport and they shuttled us to the port. It was really
frustrating. I asked when we booked the
Mercury if I could join the Captains Club, since I had sailed with them before. They said
it takes ten weeks to process and
that I couldn't! We asked again when we got there. No dice! The Captains Club members have
no waiting. There is a
seperate entrance and they walk you right through.
The rest of us waited in a room with hundreds of others waiting for our
numbers to be called. And don't think that you can show up at 11:00 am and get a head
start. They wouldn't start until 1:30
pm. When we finally made it to the check in counter, we were told that they moved us to a
differant cabin. So, we weren't
sure what we were going to find when we got there. We were very pleased to discover that
they upgraded us to a balcony
cabin! I am spoiled for life! I really loved having the veranda. The cabin was as nice as
before (172 ft.). They really keep the
ship immaculate. The shower is very big, for a ship. They have shampoo disensers in the
shower and hand lotion
dispensers by the counter. Don't forget to bring an extension cord and we brought an
adapter plug that changes one outlet
to three. We had the hairblower, they provide one in the bathroom for you, but it isn't
strong enough to dry my long hair, and
my electic curlers and we were always charging a cam corder battery.
The cabin had a V.C.R, which came in handy,
reviewing what we taped the day before. The interactive T.V. worked well ordering
excursions and room service. The last
time I was on the Mercury, they were having trouble with the computers and the billing was
all messed up. They would sent
us the wrong tickets, and then charge us double and triple for them! I was relieved that
everything ran smoothly this trip. One
word of caution. If you don't like teenagers and smaller children, don't go during Spring
Break and Easter. I din't mind them,
but they were very roudy and loud at times. There were packs of them ,around middle school
age, running through the ship.
I was very upset with the casino staff. The kids would sneak in and play the slot
machines. One twelve year old, told me he
won $200. the day before.I told him he wasn't allowed in the Casino and he said 'What are
they going to do to me? They
can't do anything' I spoke to a Casino staff member, and he said that the boy was lying.
Then the next day I sat down beside
a differant boy,no more than 14, playing a slot machine right in full view of the same
staff member! I told him about it, and he
asked the kid if he was 18 and he said yes , but didn't have any I.D. I have teenagers,
and there is no way that boy was over
14. So, nothing was done about it!
Key West....I was delighted with this cute tourist town. We didn't take an excursion
here.
They provided us with a cable car ride to town, complete with a tour guide. It was a short
ride . We walked through the
shops. My favorite dessert in the world is Key Lime Pie, so we walked to the Key Lime
Shoppe. It was O.K., but the ship's
was better! We went to Sloppy Joes Bar, but the bartender said that they don't serve
'fuzzy' drinks there. We asked about
Margaritas! So we went to 'Fat Tuesdays'. They had an amazing selection of frozen drinks.
Calica.... All I can say is 'why'?
You dock at a rock quarry! There is nothing there unless you take an excursion. Xcaret
park is five minutes away, and there
are cabs waiting to take you anywhere you want to go. We took the shopping/beach excursion
to Cancun. I was appalled at
the poor neighborhoods we passed. You have the rich in Cancun and just outside, poverty.
There are police stations on
each end of town to keep the wrong types out! This was told to us by our excursion guide.
He was very interesting. He has
Mayan blood and told us the differance between the Mexican people and the Mayans. He also
spoke Mayan for us. The bus
ride was a little over an hour. It was 100 degrees when we got to Cancun. We had three
hours to do whatever we wanted.
We shopped a little, but soon found our way to the beach. We walked along the stretch of
hotels and swam and layed out in
the sun a bit.
Cozumel... Nice town! Lots of good shopping. Pretty reasonable prices. The smaller
shops had very aggresive
sales people that stood outside the shop and pressured us to come in. They would say 'my
turn' and 'K-Mart' and when you
didn't go in, they were rude and abnoxious. But the larger stores weren't like that. There
was one really big store that had a
Mariache band and Mexican dancers performing for the customers. And it was air
conditioned! Then it was off to 'Carlos and
Charlies'! What fun! We found our dinner table mates from the ship there and we
partied!!!. The place was full of Spring
Breakers, and passengers from other ships at port. We stopped on the way back at the
little shops next to the port and
found them to be very reasonably priced. I got my son an adorable teddy bear made from
LLama fur! Grand Cayman.. We
took two excursions. Sting Ray City.. Fantastic! I was not too thrilled when my husband
said he wanted to do this one. But it
was the most fun I had on the whole trip. The only bad point, they cram you in to a small ,
'not' air conditioned bus. They
have fold down seats in the isle so you are squished together like sardines and hot!
Fortunately it is a short ride to where
they have the excursion boat. It's a nice two level boat with bathrooms and a shower to
wash off the salt water. The guides
were good and explained what to do and what not to do. The stingrays have spines all along
thier backs that run to the tip of
thier tails. As long as you stay away from that part, your fine. It was a forty five
minute ride to the coral reef and sandbar
where you get into the water. About three to four feet deep. Beautiful turqoise water.
Very clear. There were hundreds of
Stingrays swimming around. One of the tour guides held one so you could feel it. They feel
like a slimmy wet mushroom.
Some people fed them. You hold the food in the palm of you hand and they hover over it and
vaccume the food up! They
said to be sure not to get any on any other parts of your body, or they well vaccume that
too! The tour guide said "Men, I
know what you are thinking, and it doesn't work'!
After getting back we walked the two blocks to the hotel that we bought entrance to. Grand
Cayman hotels do not have an
open door policy for the cruise passengers. It was very crowded. I walked down the beach
and it was better. The sun is very
intense in Cayman. Never go anywhere without sunscreen! I was using '50' and still got a
dark tan. The ocean was really
wonderful there. The ship provided a ride back to town and we shopped a bit. It is a
British territory, so everyone drove on
the left side of the road. Also, I didn't realize, they have thier own money! We got some
in change. Two coins had ships on
them. You don't have to change your money, everyone takes American. That goes for Cozumel
and Cancun as well. But in
Cancun, not all shops will give you change in American, so carry small bills.
Grand Cayman was very high priced on
everything. I got several Rum Cakes. I think my favorite brand was 'Tortuga' , but there
were more flavors at Captain
Rackham's. Try the Banana. Yum! We tendered in to Grand Cayman , which I think is a lot of
fun . The Mercury has really
nice lifeboats. The next day there was a fantastic tropical party on deck by the pool
around 10 pm. What fun! They
decorated the whole deck. There was wonderful buffet set up, ice carving demonstration and
the band Oasys playing. It was
one of the highlites! The midnight buffet was spectacular as usual. The last night I
bought little farewell presents for the
couples at our table. I was impressed that the shop wrapped them for me and delivered them
to my stateroom! I could find
nothing wrong with the ship or the service on this trip. Our waiter was a little slower
than the others. One night we were just
getting our dinner when everyone else was on dessert. But we were visiting anyway. The
meat was always as you ordered.
Everything was hot. We had a marvelous time. I don't think anyone else pampers you as well
as Celebrity. My husband
noticed that the women were treated like queens. We were always served before the men and
never allowed to carry a tray
at the buffet. We didn't have a flight until the next day, so we took the Everglades tour.
I would highly recomend it. We didn't
get to see any alligators, but they usually do. We sat in the front row, to get good
camcorder pictures. I wouldn't again. I got
a little mud plattered and got a bug in my mouth. After, they bused us to the Flamingo
Gardens. We found that really
interesting. The bus driver was nice enough to take us right to our hotel in Miami. He
dropped everyone off at the airport and
took us after. Our hotel was a mile from the airport. I would recomend the 'Mercury' very
highly. Our next cruise is in June on
Carnival's Elation to the Mexican Riviera. I just hope it is half as nice as the Mercury!

This was our second cruise, the first one was on Home Line's Atlantic 15 years ago. I am
45 and an R.N. My husband is 50
and an engineer. We took this cruise to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. The cruise
reviews on this sight were very
helpful in planning our trip and I hope that some of my comments might help others. I will
briefly describe things that I feel
have been covered alot already and then go into details about things I feel have not been
mentioned too much. We flew
Delta Express into Ft. Lauderdale airport on our own and took the short ride to the
terminal in a taxi. Judging by the mob
scene at the airport I am glad we had not purchased transfers. It was much easier this
way. The embarkation process was
painless because we were in a suite. There is a roped area for suites and Captain's Club
members and we embark first.The
terminal is air conditioned with a small snack bar and restrooms. The spa and
entertainment staff were helping people get
oriented and signing people up for treatments at a table. We were in a Sky Suite, having
been upgraded from a Cat.1. It had
a large(for a ship) spotless marble bathroom, king size(almost) bed, sofa, table and two
chairs. It also had a very large
partially covered deck.
This was wonderful as we could get some sun and not have to go to the public areas. The
sky suites
come with butler service. There was chilled champagne, a bowl of fruit, a free totebag,
and lots of toiletries. There was a
hairdyer and phone in the bathroom. We were thrilled! The ship itself is spotless and
beautiful. The staff was unfailinly
helpful and polite. Now for a few specifics: Medical Facilities: I don't believe I have
seen this addressed so I thought I would
go into detail here. On the first night of the cruise I broke a filling in my tooth. I
called down to the hospital and was told that
they do not have any dental facilities but they could send up a temporary filling for me
to put in myself. They also said that
they could give me the name of a good dentist in Cozumel if I got a toothache.
The next day I went down to get the name of
the dentist and since I am an R.N. they gave me a tour of the small but very well equipped
hospital. I was very impressed!!
They had a state of the art facility with crash cart, full pharmacy, I.V. poles, the
works!! The only reason I deducted ten
points from my rating is that I am sure alot of dental emergencies happen on trips and I
felt that they should be better
equipped for that. Galley Tour: We took a tour of the galley one afternoon and were very
impressed by the cleanliness and
efficiency in this part of the ship. They have 160 chefs on board, 20 are off while 140
work. It was entirely stainless steel
except for the floor. It was spotless! They get all of their food in Ft. Lauderdale which
to me was very reassuring. The do
take on water in other ports but they purify it. Ports of Call: We visited Key West,
Cozumel, Calica, and Grand Cayman. This
was a great itinerary but I felt that the time they spent in port was much too short.
The other cruise we took was to Bermuda
where you dock for the week so we were unprepared for the island hopping. Think very
carefully if you like to stay a decent
amount of time in ports because we were disappointed that we had so little time. Pool Side
Entertainment: We went on this
cruise to relax and were unprepared for the very loud and relentless music and cruise
director patter during the afternoon
and evening. It was really bothersome so a couple of afternoons and evenings I had to put
in ear plugs. I understand that
alot of people like pool type games but this was really intrusive. They should turn down
their amps! Food: The food was of
good quality and prepared well. You could literally eat all day. I especially liked the
lamb dishes. If however you are a
vegetarian like my daughter there was not much at the buffet for you to eat. I think you
could request something in the dining
room but this was not a cruise for non meat eaters. If you like snack foods bring your
own. Aside from the few little cans of
cheese puffs in the mini bar chip type snacks were non-existant. Also no popcorn at the
movies. Absolutely no gum was
sold-I can understand that though, the ship is beautiful and they wouldn't want gum stuck
to things. Smoking: I am an
ex-smoker and really wanted to avoid smelling cigarette smoke as I have developed an
allergy to it. Although there are no
non-smoking cabins our cabin had no odor.
There was no smoking in the restaurants or most public areas although some
lounges and areas of the decks you could smoke. Up until the last day or so people really
followed the rules but then chaos!
People were smoking everywhere and I had to escape to my room. I believe in equal rights
for smokers but please Celebrity
try to enforce the non-smoking areas a little better! Finally, we felt that the cruise
line does an excellent job of keeping things
running smoothly. Everything from room arrangement to shore excursions to food
presentation was well thought out. You
really felt like they had everything under control and took pride in their ship. We would
definitely consider Celebrity again
depending on the itinerary. We would love to see them sail into a port and stay a few
days.

This was the first time my husband and I had cruised with Celebrity. Our previous cruises
had been with Norwegian and
Royal Carribean. The Mercury was a wonderful surprise and we plan on sailing with
Celebrity again soon.
Our sail date was on Sunday so we chose to go a day early and booked this at the time we
booked the cruise. I would highly
recommend this as it reduces all the stress of weather or other travel problems making you
miss the sailing of your cruise.
This actually happened to several people on our sailing. We booked with Embassy Suites,
which is quite lovely and very
close to the pier. The one error we made was in purchasing transfers from the airport to
the hotel, and from the hotel to the
pier, through the cruise company. By using the transfers we were forced to ride all over
Ft. Lauderdale while the van
dropped off other passengers. On Sunday we were told to be in the hotel lobby at 1pm for
transfer to the pier, however, the
cruise line never picked us up. The hotel graciously transferred about 30 people to the
pier free of charge. According to the
staff at Embassy Suites, if you are staying with them, they will pick you up at the
airport and take you to the pier on the day
you sail, all for free.
Embarkation was slightly confusing but seemed to pass quickly. The best tip we received
was to join the Captain's Club and
receive priority embarkation, a.k.a. no waiting. The cost to join is $30 for a lifetime
membership. If you are not a member,
sign up once you get on board and you will receive the benefit of priority disembarkation
at the end of your cruise. Well
worth it.
Our cabin was a category 2 with a balcony. While it was smaller than the balcony cabin on
Royal Carribean, there was plenty
of storage space both in the cabin and bathroom. Great shower, bad blow dryers.
The food was great and exceeded our expectations. We especially enjoyed no theme nights,
napkins transformed into
creatures, or waiters dancing with food on their head. It was an elegant dining experience
every evening with wonderful
menu choices. The sommeliers were also helpful and knowledgeable.
The Mercury is a beautiful ship and very well maintained. The only time we ever
experienced crowds was around the pool on
days at sea. This was a wonderful cruise experience and we are counting the days to our
Celebrity cruise next year.

What a wonderful trip and a great cruise line! This was our first cruise and was a gift
from Brents company. We were treated
to a cabin on the Vista Deck (deck #9) with a veranda. Having the extra space to read, to
watch the sun rise and set and to
relax was outstanding! The cabins were comfortable and the king-sized bed was roomy and
fine for sleeping. Dressing for
formal nights was a little tight and we joked about needing one person to sit down while
the other was primping. Many
passengers commented about the amazing hot water and water pressure in the showers. We
were convinced that they
provided the best showers we ever experienced!
Our cabin steward, Alex, was super. At the end of the cruise, all passengers are asked to
complete a survey and can
highlight any staff members worthy of extra recognition. Please consider recommending any
staff that truly go above and
beyond as these rewards are hard to get. We were very pleased with Alexs care and
attention, along with John, the wine
steward. Everyone was wonderful, but these two definitely stood out in the crowd.
We read many reviews on this site prior to leaving and agree with most of what we read.
Bring a large travel mug if you are a
coffee/tea drinker as the mugs are small. Also, it took a while to get used to buffet
waiters whisking our trays out of our
hands and escorting us to a table. There was only one half hour each day in which NO FOOD
was served anywhere! One
can easily find burgers/hot dogs, pizza, frozen yogurt, formal 'tea', and so on.
Deck #11 (the Resort Deck) can be pretty hectic on at sea days. Instead, we spent the
majority of our time in the back of
Deck #11 in the Palm Springs Café area, enjoying the salt water pool, cushioned lounge
chairs and a retractable roof to let
the sun shine in! It also provides a great open patio for eating and relaxing day and
night. Lounge chairs can always be
found in the back of the ship on decks 8, 9 and 10. We left our daughter back home and
were easily able to escape the
noise and enthusiasm of vacationing families.
The Navigator Club on deck 12 was the best place to watch the world go by, with its floor
to ceiling glass windows and
lounge service. We watched the captain leave ports on two occasions while we sipped
cocktails with new friends. Formal
night was fun (the tuxedo we rented ahead of time fit like a glove and was delivered right
to our cabin). Photographers are
available to take formal portraits and roam to each table for casual poses.
We ate at the second seating (8:30pm) and spend the rest of the night between the
Celebrity Theater and the Casino. The
shows were terrific (started at 11pm for late diners), although the dancers and singers
were more enjoyable than the
magician. We were treated to Broadway vocalist Pamela Blake (Evita) for two performances
a special treat we were told.
She was fantastic and earned a standing ovation. The Casino was a hubub of activity and at
times had no open space at the
card tables. The waitstaff were often slow in taking drink orders, so plan accordingly.
Its a cashless system (all charged to
your credit card at the end), but certainly not a paperless system as we were given a
receipt for every transaction. Charges
could easily be reviewd on the cabin interactive TV system.
Excursions do fill up fast so book early. Of all the ports, Key West and Grand Cayman were
our favorites.
KEY WEST: We took the shuttle to the trolley stop and wandered around downtown on our own.
The maps were fairly good
and the shopping was plentiful. Make sure you find the Key Lime Pie Shoppe. We enjoyed a
frozen Key Lime Pie on a stick
dipped in chocolate. It was heavenly. We already tried to recreate it at home from the
recipe we bought on a refrigerator
magnet. Key West was definitely a place we would like to visit for more time.
COZUMEL: We didnt book an excursion here because we read about all of the great
shopping. Ugh! If you dont mind
feeling like a walking dollar sign, this is the place for you! We were embarrassed being
American tourists here. The best
shopping for trinkets, etc. was at the end of the downtown area Los
Cinco Soles get dropped off there and work your
way back to the center of downtown. Cabs are available everywhere to get back to the ship.
Some folks went to the beach or
snorkeling. I would highly recommend that insteadshop in Grand Caymanit was
much nicer. The must-visit Carlos and
Charlies was a crowded second floor open-air bar with the equivalent of Dirty
Dancing on the tables and dance floor. We
had planned to meet up with friends here, but after a hot, crazy day of shopping, the
noise and chaos blew everyone away
so we left promptly.
CALICA: Given all the reviews, we signed up for Xcaret (pronounced shkar-et) the
ecological park. It was worth every penny!
Snorkeling was outstanding (get finsthey are optional) and the underwater river was
worth the hassle in line. (They put all
of your belongings in a padlocked bag and send it to the end of the river in a donkey
cart. It worked!) The river was a bit
crowded and it was clear that some swimmers had been drinking earlier in the day, so get
there early it would have been
more relaxing! All swimmers must wear life jackets. Beware the water in there is
only about 62 degrees -- no problem for us
New Hampshire-ites.
GRAND CAYMAN: This was a beautiful spot which we could easily have visited longer. The
tender service was well
orchestrated, especially since we had a 7:45am Stingray City excursion. Everyone raved
about going, so we did. We both
chickened out with actually feeding the Stingrays (they suck the squid out of your
handsbut watch your thumbs), but
enjoyed petting their velvety wings. We groaned at the early excursion, but
had no waiting, plus a full day of fun once we
returned. The ship was tendered right off shore, directly in front of all the shopping. We
left with a lovely Tanzanite necklace
and earrings from Colombian Emeralds International, along with several treats for family
and friends. At each destination, we
were given a map featuring all of the recommended shopping. Gina the shopping guru gave
lectures about each port and
the lectures were rebroadcast on the in-cabin TV.
All in all, we had a wonderful time, and would sail on any Celebrity ship. We were a bit
anxious about seasickness and such,
but had no problems and used NONE of the remedies we brought. The veranda was a welcome
treat and if you have the
opportunity to splurge, go for it! We are now hooked on cruising and cant wait to go
again!

What a fantastic vacation. This was our very first cruise, and I can most definitely say
wont be our last. The Mercury is a
beautiful ship. It is very well maintained, and the staff we dealt with were terrific.
Were were in a category 5 ocean view
stateroom on deck 8, also called the panorama deck. Our cabin # was 8086. This turned out
to be an ideal location. It was
away from all activities where noise was was not a problem, but close enough to all the
main areas of the ship. I dont want to
get into to many details, but would like to offer some tips and advice to help make your
experience on this ship a little easier
and more enjoyable. If thats possible..
First off dont hurry to get to the ship on your sailing day. This was difficult for us to
do because we were quite anxious to get
there to see the vessel and begin our voyage. Our bus from the hotel ( bahiamar raddison)
picked us up at 2:00 pm. by this
time a majority of the people were already on board. We got to the terminal around 2:30 or
so got our luggage checked
through. waited in line for about 5 mins. and were on the boat by 3:00 pm. Embarkation was
no where near the hassel we
had expected due to the fact we got there at the time we did. So thats my first tip.. Dont
get to the terminal before 2:00 pm
Second. I would recommend the late seating for dinner, escpecially if you intend on making
the most of your ports of call.
this gives you plenty of time when you get back on board to wind down a little and get
ready. If your hungry, room service will
have a sandwich, salad, or light snack to your room within minutes. or a short walk up to
deck 11 will have pizza and burgers.
I suppose the only downfall to the late seating would be your lack of appetite for the
midnight buffets. We chose to skip the
main dinner 2 nights and check out the late buffets. Also note that the show times in the
celebrity theater are scheduled to
accomodate both dinner seatings, so you dont need to worry about missing out on a show
because of your dinner schedule.
As far as the shore excursions go, we decided to book ours through the ship. We had
debated as to do our own excursions
because we had heard that the cost was a bit less to book your own. We certainly made the
correct choice booking ours on
board. Heres a brief description of the stuff we did on each stop
Key west- We chose not to do one of the excursions that the ship offered here because we
heard that they werent that
great. Based on friends and others we know who have visited key west, we went to the moped
hospital first thing and rented
2 scooters, what a terrific plan this turned out to be. We just cruised around the island
for a while and checked out the
sights. For 2 hours it cost us $32.00, and with our little key west map they gave us on
the ship went and seen what we
wanted to see. As opposed to a tour that takes you places that you may not have alot of
interest in. Upon returning our
scooters, that left us a couple of hours to walk and shop down Duval street. Very fun day.
Too little time on this Island
though. We were sailing again by 1:30.
Cozumel- We booked the Fury snorkel and beach tour. What a terrific time this was. Make
sure you book this tour a day
early though because it did sell out quickly. You go out with about 40 or so people on a
catamaran type vessel for about a
20 min ride, while en route you get all the snorkeling tips and advice you need. They stop
in a special area and everyone
can jump off and snorkel at your own leisure. This lasts about 45 mins or so.. Very good
snorkeling here by the way. We saw
a variety of sealife and coral, the water is warm and crystal clear. Unbelievable. Once
the snorkeling is over its off to a
private beach forn an hour of laying out or playing volleyball and other games. By the way
the drinks from this point until you
get back to the ship are all included, as much as you can drink in an hour and a half. The
crew on this tour were fantastic,
great excursion. $39.00 pp After cleaning up and having lunch on the ship the rest of the
day was shopping in Cozumel,
nothing to write home about, but it was okay. A must though is a quick stop into Carlos
and Charlies, what a wild place. If you
have time and like to party, dont miss this place. The cab ride into town is only $5.
Calica- Theres not a whole lot to do here, We chose the Xcaret excursion. Very intersting
place. Lots to do. The variety of
animal life they have on display is fascinating. The facilities are very clean. you can
swim with the dolphins, but if you dont
get that opportunity, then watching the people who do get to do it is a treat in itself.
Theres a very nice beach there, an
underground river, a museum, and just a whole lot of other neat stuff. Excellent excursion
$36.00 pp also they due have
some ruins here also. My point is the Ruins exursion they offer we heard wasnt that great
ecspecially fro $68.00 pp no
discount for kids. Dont miss Xcaret.
Grand Cayman- My advice here is to book the early stingray city tour the minute you get
situated in your cabin. Based on
the tour guides advice the early tour is the best because the stingrays are most active at
this time. Im not going to go into
details about this tour because i'm sure you have read all about it already. my only
advice here is Dont miss this excursion it
is awesome. You get back to the boat for lunch and a shower, and you have the rest of the
day to shop, or just stroll down 7
mi;le beach. Very nice place.
There is always something to do on this ship. The Shows are okay, with the exception of
Michael James (The ladder guy)
he's great. The pool band Oasis was quite entertaining, the disco was quite fun. The staff
and crew were fantastic. We
actually got quite attached to the people that served us closely and felt quite sad when
we left. the casino on board is
adequate, though it was very unkind to me but it was fun. It acually got quite busy,
escpecially on the at sea days. so if you
want a seat at a 21 table, get there early. The food on board is very good, and the menus
at the main restauraunt where
quite elegant, a little to fancy for me, but anyway it was worth going for the service you
recieve alone. Very neat experience.
The drinks on board are rather pricey, so I bought a bottle of Bacardi at Calica, and a 6
pack of coke and we mixed our own
drinks. The bottle was only $6 a small dink on board was $3.95. I'll bet I saved almost
$100 by doing this. We did however
spend our fair share on other exotic drinks on board, some were actuall quite good. i;e
The Bahama mama!
All in all this was the best vacation we've had and we do a couple of trips a year. The
ship is everything they say it is, and
believe me, they treat you like celebrities. This is indeed a 5 star ship. Also
Disembarkation was a piece of cake. If your in no
hurry, go up to the palms cafe and have breakast and soak up some of the ft Lauderdale
scenery. In case they access this
review we would like to give our very special thanks to the following Thomas- our cabin
steward Jacek- our waiter Mark- asst.
waiter You guys were the best! Thanks for a wonderful time.
