I travelled on the Mercury during March Break with my 73 year old mother. Our package
included air passage on a
Transat L10 11. The flights were very uncomfortable. On the way down, one passenger was
actually yelled at because the
airline had overbooked and the passenger they selected to bump refused to go. She was a
young girl travelling with a
group of friends and I can understand her refusal to leave the flight. The seats were
cramped, the food was absolutely
awful. On the way home we were offered a stale balogna and cheese sandwich (without
butter), an opened container of
marinated veggies, a glass of water!!, and a small chocolate bar for dessert. They also
offered a small bottle of wine to
each passenger, but it was nothing to write home about either. We were met at the airport
in Florida, and escorted
quickly to a bus that took us and our baggage to the port. Boarding was quick and
efficiently done, but make sure that
you have ALL your documents ready. (Canadians have to give up their passports for the
duration of the trip.) Our cabin
was spotless, comfortable and beautifully decorated. We would have liked more hangers for
our clothes though. We had
an annoying squeak from one of the bunks (folded againgst the wall overhead). The steward
tried to fix it but had no
luck. We were amused to find our nighties artfully laid out on our beds each night in the
shape of butterflies. The second
night we had a medical emergency on board and a passenger had to be airlifted off the ship
by helicopter. It required us
to turn around to get closer to Key West and changed our itinerary somewhat, but it was
nice to see how much trouble
they were willing to go to to see that this passenger was taken care of properly. Bravo to
the whole staff who handled
this so smoothly. The food sounded and looked spectacular, but we were disappointed in the
roast beef one night and in
the fish on 2 ocassions. The lamb dishes were fabulous, as were the desserts we tried. Our
waiter was a gem. He
entertained a nearby table of children each night with magic tricks. His recommendations
for dinner and for shore
excursions were usually right. We found that the shop personnel were a bit snippy and
impatient, but all other staff on
board were friendly, smiling, and very helpful. Because it was March Break, there were the
full range of passengers,
including many family groups. The mix worked very well and there were activities for ALL
ages. The youngest children
had their own activity program as did the teens, (who really seemed to enjoy it!). The
pool was definitely the most
popular spot on the ship and the band kept things moving day and night. Bring your bikini.
Tex-Mex night was a blast.
There were quiet spots for those who wanted them too. If you are a golfer, try the golf
simulator, it is an electronic
marvel. There is a video arcade and a computer room for exploring too. The photographers
were not intrusive, as I have
seen on other ships. Mom was limited in her mobility and so we took liesurely shore
excursions. Xcaret was the high
point of the trip for her, except for the persistent salespitches of the Mexican tender
crew. The Eco park is beautiful and
can be toured at your own pace. The lagoon was wonderful , as were the huge pineapple-rum
drinks we were served on
the beach. Get there early, as beach chairs are scarce. (Thanks to the young couple from
Equador who gave Mom one of
theirs.) We had a fabulous time on board the Mercury. The entertainment was terrific each
and every night. Michael
James is a must see. So is the spa! Sally did a lovely job with our hair.
Try the Mercury, she's a beautiful ship.
