My husband and I first sailed on RCCL's Monarch of the Seas for our honeymoon two years
ago, and the overall difference in quality, comfort, food, and
cabin space is 100% better on Celebrity's Mercury.
The Mercury is less than one year old but I feel this ship will feel and look the same ten
years from now, it's that well maintained. We had a Category 2
cabin, with a small veranda. The room was spacious with a King size bed, plenty of closet
and storage space, and the bath and shower facilities were a
nice size. The veranda provided privacy, and we enjoyed early morning coffee and late
evening drinks there. It's wonderful to hear the ocean
sounds...very relaxing!
The Dining Room service was truly excellent. Our waiter, Ziya, along with our busboy
Eddie, were fabulous...very attentive as well as friendly. Our Maitre 'D,
Nicoli, was very gracious, and our Wine steward, Gustavo, taught us quite a lot about
several nice wines for dinner. As for the food, the selection was
wonderful...and delicious! We had the early seating, and a table for two at our personal
request. Every dinner was beautifully presented. By the way, the
children in the Dining room were very well mannered and quiet...so much for don't do the
early seating because of 'all those kids!'
We were very impressed with the entertainment in the Celebrity theater...the Celebrity
singers and dancers were fabulous! The cruise director, Allen King,
deserves high marks for the diverse and high quality productions. The Something Special
group, although talented, were everywhere on the ship...as a
result, you quickly became bored seeing them. And their 'uniform' of blue and khaki did
not help. Dull!!!
I was pleasantly surprised with the overall itinerary for this cruise. Key West was fun to
see, and a few hours were all you needed. An entire day would
have been too long, and I think a few people would have missed the ship, and still be in
Sloppy Joe's! Cozumel had some great shopping, with good buys
on silver and pottery. Calica was a nice stop, as we enjoyed the trip to Tulum very much.
Grand Cayman, and StingRay city, were great. Bermuda came to
mind as you looked around at the architecture of the shops and resorts. We spent two days
at sea, and although the second day was a bit cool and
breezy, there's plenty to see and do onboard. We went to our first Art auction, and the
casino got lucky! The shops were nice, but after Cozumel and
Grand Cayman, you're spoiled.
Overall, this was truly a wonderful cruise, and we hope to save and do a Trans-Canal
cruise next...hopefully on the Mercury. Our only negative was the
tender service at Grand Cayman...and as we're sure Celebrity will work out those kinks for
future passengers. We very highly recommend this cruise line,
and certainly this ship...it was 'simply the best!'
