The general appearance of the ship was very good. Well designed and decorated, very clean
and well maintained. However, it was also very large
and crowded and lacked the character of the smaller ships that we had cruised previously.
The ship was 14 stories with 12 elevators. It was not
unusual to travel 5-6 floors from room to dinner, casino, etc. so the elevator was a
requirement....they were crowded and a long wait was not
unusual. The room was spacious and well appointed with great storage, large bathroom, and
roomy, goodworking shower. The room itself was very
quiet but the hallway noise was very loud and grabbing a nap in the PM before dinner was
next to impossible. The steward was invisible yet did a
great job.
Quality of the food in the dining room was very good at all meals, however, the dining
room at dinner was very crowded and noisy... not a good place
for a leisurely, relaxing meal. The wait staff definitely gave you the feeling that they
wanted to rush you thru the meal. Food on the buffet deck was
equivalent to a low priced, low quality cafeteria....not well prepared and usually not
hot. The midnight buffets were so crowded and the lines were so
long, we didn't get to see the buffet except twice and both times were generally
unimpressive in comparison to buffets that are available at your local
Marriot.
Entertainment was generally good, particularly in the main lounge/theater. The cruise
director was kind of stiff and appeared aloof, although the
assistant (Max) was friendly and accessible.
Getting on and off the ship went very well with the process exceeding our expectations.
Bottom line: you get what you pay for. Costa's pricing was very competitive and
represented a good value, so our comments, although generally
critical, must be viewed in the context that the pricing was considerably less than the
more prestigious ships. Since we only go on a cruise every 5
years or so, I believe we'd spend a bit more the next time and upgrade to a higher quality
ship.
