The Costa Romantica is a very beautiful ship that offers its' passengers a generally good
product for the price paid. I sailed with my wife and three year old
son over Easter week, when there were over 300 children onboard the vessel. The staff did
a wonderful job at keeping the children busy and out of the
way of those passengers traveling without children. The ship is very modern in style, with
lots of marble and veneer throughout. She is stunning, but
sometimes a bit loud in the public areas because of the marble floors and the openness of
the stair towers. Deck space is somewhat limited, as she has no
traditional Promenade Deck to stroll on. All deck space is on the top of the ship. The
food was good in the dining room, but both breakfast and lunch
buffets in the Lido dining area were not as good. The variety and taste were not as good
as on most other ships. Service at all dining areas was
acceptable, but not as good as on Holland America or RCCL. Entertainment was generally
good although not the variety on expects on a cruise ship. This
is because there were about 500 Europeans onboard who did not use English as their main
language, thus Costa had shows that were less verbal like an
illusionist, a human circus and such. My family enjpyed the entertainment while other
Americans didn't. The ports were good except many passengers
complained about being offered drugs for sale in Ocho Rios. The cabins were wonderful. We
had cabin 6062, an outside which was about 200 square feet.
It was very comfortable and the three of us never felt crowded. Thw space ratio on the
entire ship was good, with no lines and never having a problem in
finding a seat or a spot to relax at. The large number of Europeans gave the ship an
international feel which I enjoyed. Everyone seemed to get along well
together and I was surprised that most of them followed Costa's smoking and non-smoking
area rules, unlike the ships in Europe. Overall, I say that the
Costa Romantica offers a three star cruise on a five star ship. If the service was
improved a bit and the food improved , it would be a four star product. My
family did have a wonderful cruise and would probabally cruise with Costa again in the
future on a European cruise or a Southern Caribbean cruise.
