I was on a short familiarization cruise from LA to Acapulco, which consisted of 3 full
days at sea. Vistafjord is an older
ship that had an extensive refit in 1995. As a result, the cabins are lovely, with
gleaming marble bathrooms. There are
some wonderful public spaces, as well.
Vistafjord places itself in the luxury market, and the embarkation process certainly
prepares you for a lovely experience.
Whereas, at the adjoining pier, the Viking Serenade line was so long that it was out on
the street, Vistafjord passengers
sat in folding chairs and were served champagne and orange juice. When it was time to
board, we walked up to a
counter for a minute or two, then went right on the ship.
Vistafjord has cabin stewardesses. Ours was a beautiful young woman from Germany, who
spoke excellent English.
She was friendly, efficient, and appeared immediately when we called Room Service. (By the
way, there is no tipping on
this ship (gratuities are included), and it certainly makes for a nice atmosphere. You
never feel like you are being
hustled.)
Our cabin was on the small side, but there was lots of closet space and more drawers than
we could fill. It also had a
refrigerator/mini-bar and a safe. The bath amenities were wonderful, and the towels were
huge and fluffy. Lots of
storage space there, too. The beds had down pillows and duvets, and were very comfortable.
It wasn't really quiet,
though. Lots of creaking noises kept us awake until we became accustomed to them.
Most of the passengers on this ship are elderly. There are quite a lot of German-speaking
passengers, so
announcements are in German as well as English. But there are not many announcements. The
only ones we heard while
at sea were the Captain's daily report at noon each day. Otherwise, it was quiet. No calls
to Bingo (although they
HAVE Bingo every afternoon), no announcements of sales at the shops -- nothing. Everything
on this ship is soothing
and low-key. It is definitely not a ship for children, or for anyone who is looking for a
party. It's perfect for seniors, or
anyone who is looking for a quiet, relaxing cruise, with wonderful service and terrific
food.
