My wife and I took our first cruise last fall. We went on the Disney Magic because we are
Disney-aholics, and we
are in the Disney Vacation Club (a Disney Timeshare) and were able to use our points for
the cruise. We are in
our late 20's with no kids, and overall we had a blast. I will try to focus on the
positives and the negatives.
Positives: - Castaway Cay (Private Island) - was incredible. The beach was better than
Hawaii. It was the most
beautiful place I have ever been. A private adult (no kids, not naked butts) beach, a
family beach and a teen
beach. Gives everyone their space. Lounge chairs galore. A great place to kick back.
- Palo - Adults only, need a special reservation restaurant. Northern Italian food. Best
meal of my whole trip.
Romantic, fine dining at its best.
- Shows - If ya love Disney, the shows are great. Disney Dreams sticks out as the top one,
and it will give you
goose bumps.
Negatives: - We had a wheelchair accessable room (neither of us are wheelchair bound) and
were not happy with
the bathroom. The gutters that collected the shower water smelled musty and there was
nothing that they could
do about it because the water would stagnate there. Next cruise will be a regular room.
- Nassau - What a dirty little town. We walked around for 30 minutes and went back onto
the ship and had a blast
for the rest of the day.
Overall: We loved it so much that we are going back for another Disney Magic Cruise on
9/3/99. We were novices
last time and know what to look for this time.

We traveled on the Disney Magic during Hurricaine Dennis. It was our first cruise, and we
spent a lot of money to
do it right -- or so we thought. The weather is not Disney's responsibility, but I would
have expected a company
like that to accomodate its high-paying guests better during difficult weather situation.
On our cruise, we spent the
first day at sea, and only half of the second day in Nassau. We totally missed Castaway
Cay -- their highly touted
private island. Again, the weather is not their fault, but you would think they would have
acknowledged in some
fashion that they were sorry our cruise did not get the full experience (like free drinks
or a small discount voucher
= something.) But, Disney acted like it was business as usual, and as far as we could
tell, did nothing different. As
adults traveling without our children, there was virtually nothing to do on the ship
during the day we were at sea
== other than the pool. Judging by the few people at the adult pool, there were a lot of
people hanging in their
cabins -- how fun! There were movies, but they were all cartoons but one, and they showed
that movie three
nights in a row at 11 p.m., the time when most adults would go to the movie.
Another thing that surprised me was how unstable the boat was for how big it is. We had
rough seas two of the
three nights. The last night, there had to be people sick all over the ship. I felt like I
was on a really scary roller
coaster for five hours.
On the positive side, the ship is beatiful, and the embarkation and debarkation were very
smooth and easy. The
restaurants are fun, not five-star, but very nice. Most of the ship's crew were nice. We
never saw the Captain and
other than a few loudspeaker announcements didn't know there was a cruise director?
Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. Often, when outside forces intefere,
that is when you have the
opportunity to have a truly memorable time. We tried to approach this cruise that way,
once we realized the
Hurricaine would interfere with our itinerary. But, apparently Disney did not! This was
memorable in the worst way.

We went on the 4-day cruise, after 3 days in Disneyworld and immediately after the Disney
Wonder began service.
The ship was only half full (1350 people) and therefore there were few crowds or lines.
However, the children's pool
area was often crowded. There was only one seating for dinner (at 7 pm), only one nightly
showtime (at 9 pm).
Embarking and debarking was always a very simple procedure. We had our passports from
Disneyworld that opened
our hotel rooms, got us into Disneyworld, paid for anything we wanted (except in Nassau)
and opened our cabin on the
ship. Because we had a more expensive Disneyworld resort, we had an outside cabin with a
veranda. Our 8-year old
daughter took one look down at the water far below and stood a step back from then on. The
cabin was large and
spacious for a cruise. However, the master bed was closer to the door while the children's
area was closer to the
veranda, the TV, and the telephone. It seemed it should have been reversed. Our room
steward was friendly though
we rarely saw her. When the electricity went out in the room she told us who to call and
it was quickly fixed.
Dining was generally a positive experience. The waiters were friendly and efficient. The
food at Topsiders was good
but not unique. We ate there for most meals other than dinner because it was simple and
took little time. Our
daughter, a picky eater was always able to find what she wanted there. Perhaps by going
all out for kids, the food for
adults doesn't stand out as exceptional. At Animators Palate, our table was in a far
corner of the room and we saw little
of the special effects. We had dinner at Palo one night. The food was very good but again
not exceptional---except for
the chocolate souffle for dessert. Otherwise, desserts were boring and uninspiring.
Shore excursions were pretty good. It was great that tenders were never required and we
could walk on and off the
ship easily. Nassau was a reasonable, but not wonderful, shore excursion. Our daughter got
her hair braided for a
good price (one must bargain). We also found some good buys in the stores. Castaway Cay
was a very nicely
maintained beach with floats, inner-tubes, and snorkling equipment to rent. Cookies
Bar-B-Que was tasty.
The biggest negative on the cruise was the need for a great deal more money than you may
expect to need.
August/September are hot. We had no rain or heavy cloudiness throughout the cruise.
Drinking fountains were few
and far between and soft drinks were only available for free at dinner. Numerous waiters
were constantly going around
offering drinks (at first you didn't realize they cost 4.50 to 6.50 (they were 6.50 if you
got them in a glass that you might
want to take home). Kids could get 'virgin' drinks for the same prices. At Castaway Cay,
on the beach and far from
Cookies, the drink vendors made a killing. In the rooms, cokes and bottled water were
expensive. And of course there
is an automatic gratuity on all drinks including those in your room (and the waiters let
you add more).
There were several positives on the ship. The shows were all excellent, well acted and
beautifully presented. The
theatre was beautiful. The movie theatre was also excellent as were the other bars/family
entertainment rooms.
Entertainment in other places was excellent. If anything, there was more entertainment for
children and perhaps too
little diversion for adults alone.
The health club was nice, well-maintained, with a good view. The spa was wonderful, filled
with a number of types of
massages, water therapies, and even a couples 'teach each other' to massage option. We
tried many of them and
were quite impressed (though they were expensive). The best deal in the spa was the
Rainforest, filled with a variety of
aromatic showers, saunas and steam rooms, heated seats, water fountain, all able to be
used for a full day for $8.00 if
you have another spa treatment ($15 without).
The best part of the cruise for us was how well they take care of kids. There were so many
Disney character
appearances that after the first day our daughter no longer wanted to run whenever a
character appeared. The
Oceaneers Club was perfect. With numerous 'counselors', our daughter felt it was like a
great new camp with loads of
activities. We kept thinking she would get bored or want to come back with us but she
often stayed for more. It was
open until 12 or 1 in the morning and some kids would be sleeping on mats in front of a
Disney movie. They moved
around the ship at different times and you could always find where they were easily.
Meanwhile, you are given a
beeper and your children can call you when they want. One can conceivably leave a kid
there from morning until
midnight every day. If anyone deserved tipping on the ship, I felt that it was those
counselors.
Overall, we had a great time. Perhaps some of it was caused by the small number of people
on the ship. A request we
might have for the future is for a weeklong cruise.

My husband and I took this vacation with my parents (who treated), my sister, and her two
children - ages 5 and 14.
The ship is spectacular from bow to stern. There is nothing like your first glimpse from
the freeway enroute. The
classic styling of days gone by are in evidence at every turn. Every inch of the ship is
clean, well thought out, and
glamourous - she's a glorious lady. We were COMPLETELY impressed.
Embarkation was a snap. Following the land portion of our trip, the Disney motorcoaches
picked us up at our hotel -
the motorcoaches are sparkling, and have televisions that provide information while
enroute to the cruise terminal.
Only disappointment was getting separated from the rest of our family (our fault, not
Disney's) as we were boarding
the motorcoaches. We would have enjoyed riding to Port Canaveral together. Our motorcoach
driver was hysterical -
very entertaining, and put us in a great mood before we even saw the ship. Once inside the
terminal - also very
impressive, we took a picture with Mickey in front of a miniature version of the 'Magic',
and then boarded. Having
checked in for the land portion of our trip three days before, we already had our 'Key to
the World' card, which was our
room key for both the hotel and the ship, as well as our on board 'credit card'. As such,
we were able to board without
waiting.
We found our cabin right away. Our luggage arrived within minutes of our arrival. We
immediately went to the Topsider
buffet and had lunch. The food was buffet style. Not overly impressive, but very nice for
a buffet. We then toured the
ship. It was unreal. Every inch was beautiful. The kids in our group immediately found
'their' spots. The 14 year-old
took off for Common Grounds - the teen 'bar'. Open only to 13-17 year olds. The 5 year-old
found the two story slide
at the Mickey pool, and then got checked in at the Oceaneer's Club.
We set sail at 5:00pm, and enjoyed the cruise terminal staff waving good-bye as the ship
pulled from port. We had late
seating, which was okay, but not preferrable to early seating - especially with children.
We ate at Animator's Palate the
first night. It was wonderful. The food was well prepared/presented, and our servers were
top notch. They catered to
the kids, which made it fun for us. Disney Dreams was our show that night - not
Vegas-style, but very good indeed.
Next morning was 'at sea'. This was great fun. Lots of fun activities. We played Mickey
Mania (trivia game), the
'Not-so-Newlywed' game, and participated in the vegetable car races. All were great fun -
the vegetable car races
being my personal favorite! My sister and her eldest daughter won Mickey Mania, my husband
and I won the
'Not-so-Newlywed' game, and my sister and my father won the vegetable car race. Of course,
winning was fun, but we
would have enjoyed it win or lose. Dinner that night was at Parrot Cay. The food and
atmosphere was a bit more
casual than Animator's Palate, but just as creative, and very enjoyable. Again, service
was wonderful. Your wait staff
travels with you to each of the different dining rooms, so you are able to build and
maintain a rapport.
The next morning we arrived in Nassau. We did not enjoy Nassau. It's obvious when you are
no longer on Disney
property. Servers become rude and unaccomodating. We had wanted to take a water taxi to
Paradise Island, but after
waiting 45 minutes for more people to board the water taxi (the driver wouldn't leave with
less than a full boat), we
gave up and shopped in downtown Nassau. We found Nassau to be dirty, and the vendors
obnoxious. We re-boarded
the ship after 2 hours. There was a 75th birthday celebration for Mickey and Minnie at the
Goofy pool on deck,
complete with music and dancing. We were glad to be back on board. Dinner that night was
back in Parrot Cay for
Junkanoo Night. The Caribbean fare was well presented and tasteful. A bit of a repeat of
the night before, but we
enjoyed it just the same.
The next morning we were in Castaway Cay. There are not words to describe this Bahamian
paradise. It's a dream
come true. Combed beaches and underwater 'treasures' - themed throughout. Cookies BBQ just
off the beach was
superb. We were very sad to leave Castaway Cay. We would have gladly passed up Nassau for
an additional day at
Castaway Cay. That night we had dinner at Lumiere's - the more formal of the three
restaurants. The food was terrific.
Very French, complete with escargot and creme brulee. Both of which are personal
favorites. My father had two
escargot servings and I had two servings of creme brulee. After dinner we took pictures
with our wait staff and said our
good-byes.
The next morning we were back in Port Canaveral. After breakfast we disembarked the ship.
We passed through
Customs with ease and were back on the motorcoaches with the utmost in expediency. We were
then returned to the
Orlando airport without incident.
In summary, this was an extremely enjoyable cruise - a must for anyone with children.
Probably a bit less so for adults,
but adults who are Disney fans should DEFINITELY give it a try.
Two thumbs WAY up, Disney!

Our weekend on Disney's Magic was our seventh cruise, but our first with Disney. All other
have been with Carnival so
we thought it was time to try a different line. My husband of 27 years and I were
travelling with our daughter, who
happens to be a Disney engineer, and her best friend.
Embarkation was much smoother than with Carnival and we spent very little time waiting in
line. The welcome aboard
lunch buffet was our only buffet experience during the cruise. It was typical
buffet-quality food and nothing to write
home about (except for the shrimp.)
The ship is beautiful and bears a Disney theme throughout. The public areas are well
organized and spacious. The
three pools are small, but nice and allow the option of going to an adult-only pool.
Dining was a pleasure. Each night guests dine in a room with different theme and decor.
Meals are well prepared and
menus offer fair variety. Service is good and at a relaxed pace, compared to Carnival
which tends to shuffle folks in
and out of the dining room. We chose to enjoy all of our meals in one of the dining rooms
(Lumiere's most of the time)
as opposed to the buffet and based on what others said, that was a good choice. Guests
should be warned that, in
some cases, Disney lists soup, salad and appetizers under one heading 'appetizers' and
guest should feel free to
order one (or more) of each, if they like. I was a little frustrated that sometimes
appetizers and desserts were not listed
on the menu at all, but instead the waiter (who in most cases spoke very limited english)
would recite them. Well, folks,
sometimes I don't know what they are when they are written down and was at a complete loss
when I couldn't even
understand. Accustomed to Carnival's huge midnight buffet, we were very disappointed in
Disney's limited selection of
bite-size morsels served late night by waiters.
There is a different show every night. We enjoyed them all, but the last 'Disney Dreams'
(or something like that) was
phenomenal, incredible, outstanding. It brought together so many of the Disney characters
we have known and loved,
along with their music, in a show with two dynamic young performers in the lead. The other
shows were fun and
upbeat, with a Disney theme, but nothing spectacular, like the last. In the ladies room
after the show we all were
dabbing our mascara and commenting how it made us all cry - but only in the very best and
most touching way that
Disney does.
We were a little disappointed in the activities for adults. Or lack of same. Keep in mind
that we are coming from a
Carnival background, so we are accustomed to hyper-cruising. There were just a few lame
activities, most of them
were family-oriented. I was very surprised at how many honeymooners and couples were on
the ship without kids. And
I really wonder how many of them might return. There are clubs - and unlike Carnival,
where smoke prevents us from
even entering, smoke wasn't too bad in them - but the clubs basically shut down about
midnight. They offered several
movies (over and over again), great ones for families, but not much adult fare. No casino
and really no late night
activities. Oh, well, were returned to port well rested for once.
Debarkation was excellent. Disney has this miserable problem solved. You dine at a set
time and leave the ship when
you are finished. Voila! No (#$@%&*^!@#!*) lines!!
Overall we had a wonderful time. I hope that before we cruise with Disney again, they
institute a real late night buffet
and more adult activities. In the meantime, it is Carnival's smoke-free Paradise for us.
Any questions, please feel free
to e-mail us. Bon voyage!

We were on the cruise immediately following Hurrican Floyd. This offered a slight
deviation from our itinerary as
Castaway Cay was damaged. We ended up in Key West instead, while Nassau remained on the
schedule. There
was obviously some lack of communication between DCL staff ashore and afloat. We were
continually told by shore
staff that there would be some reiumbursements when we reached the ship for inconviniences
ashore. When we
reached the ship the cruise staff had no idea what we were talking about. A surprise for a
company that relies
heavily on their good name.
The ship was beautiful. Cabins were very comfortable and surprisingly spacious. I
especially enjoyed the interior
decorating. Our cabin steward was excellent. The atmosphere in the dining rooms were also
excellent. The quality
of the food varied from so-so to quite good. I was surprised that the dining room I
expected the best food from
(Lumiere's) was the biggest dissapointment while the dining room I expected the least from
(Parrot Cay) turned out
to be the best. Service in the dining room was considerably lacking. We had to order two
drinks at once to keep
from waiting for a refill. The head server responsible for the whole section had to refill
water glasses to keep
everyone from dehydrating. We discovered at lunch with a different wait staff that this
was indicative of our
particular servers and not the cruise line. We missed the show the first night because we
finished dinner so late.
The shows we did see were quite impressive and the theater was surprisingly comfortable.
The movies on board
were good although the theater was severly lacking in legroom.
We didn't really care for either port-of-call so we decided to spend the both days in the
spa. That was definitely the
highlight of the cruise. All treatments were reasonably priced with some really good deals
mixed in. I recommend the
couples massage lesson where each person recieved a half-body massage while the therapist
teaches the other
how to perform the massage. A bottle of massage oil and lesson book is included. It was 80
mins. for $120. Quite
resonable considering. I also recommend the surial couples mud bath. An hour in a private
sauna with theraputic
muds you spread on each other. 60 mins. for $60. A good deal and quite romantic. The
tropical rainforest is
another great deal. $8 when combined with any treatment. It consists of several different
saunas and aromatherapy
showers. Very relaxing and you can come and go as much as you want during the day.
The embarking and debarking process were very simple since we combined with a 4 day land
package. We got off
the bus, swiped our cards and walked right on board. Very easy. It was also nice that they
announced our names as
we walked aboard to the applause and cheers of some crew members gathered in the lobby.
Check out was also
easy. If you are putting it on your credit card, simply do nothing and walk off.
I would definitley recommend this to anyone with small children. I found it quite nice
without kids despite some small
annoyances. I would be hesitant to do the 7-day land/sea package again just because after
7 days I was a little sick
of Disney. The 4-day cruise would be just about right. Make sure you save plenty of time
for the spa and make your
reservations early as it fills up fast.
This cruise would be especially good for first timers and disneyphiles.
