This was to be a special voyage on the new Rotterdam Vi, replacement for the first ship I
had ever cruised on, the Rotterdam V. I am not one of those
people that compared the two ships all cruise long, I expected them to be quite different.
I actually was looking forward to the new amenities of this ship, I
loved the Veendam and expect the same, or better. This was, of course, HAL's new six star
flagship. Well to sum it up, its not. The ship is similar to the
other Statendam ships except for an additional restaurant and an additional staircase.
These two improvements were great.
The Ship:
The ship was rather dark, and did not have any cosistency to its decore. There were many
different styles represented, but for my taste they did not gel
well together. The clock tower in the atrium is far too big and at the base completely
filling the atruium. No looking up into the atrium form the first level on
this ship! There is also tons of cheap looking wood formica, though to remind us of the
older ocean liners of the past. Actually it just looks cheap.
Our Cabin:
We had a mini suite with Verandah. We thought it would nice to slurge on this typeof cabin
for it was such a special cruise. It was a nice cabin, though,
many of the drawers didn't work so they were useless and the toilet did not work properly,
often not allowing us to flush, and there is a problem with the
Verandah deck were the cabins flood if your verandah gets wet. Since it rainied several
days, we had a soogy wet cabin for five days. The staff did
nothing more than put towels down on the floor. Not what I call a six-star experience.
The cruise director was boring and really tried not to care about anyone but himself.
Never saw any opther cruise staff, for they were in their own world. I
later found out that much of the crew resented being on a ship were so many structural
things were going wrong. It showed, there were many unhappy
crew.
Mechanically the ship had engine problems which resulted in our sailing without sabilizers
much of the trip. Needless to say the ship rode very badly
throught the Atlantic.
HAL needs to get these ships FULLY completed before rolling them out.
We have just booked our next cruise ont the Statendam. I will not be going back to the
Rotterdam for a long time.
