The ship is beautiful, clean and good cruise value. The staff/crew are both professional
and charming. Our cabin (with verandah) was very comfortable and had lots of closet space
for all our clothes. I am a vegetarian and found the same vegetarian menu appearing for
most of the cruise. Also the soups were very watery. Our dining room waiter was excellent
and the maitre de visited every table at every sitting to check that all was well.
Regarding the show lounge entertainment: we loved the ventriloquist, but avoided going to
some of the dance/singing shows. Overall, we can't wait to cruise on HAL again (we went on
the Maasdam April '96).
Shore excursions that we did on our cruise:
St. Maarten Shipwreck Cove Snorkeling - [beautiful boat took us to our site] (we did the
America's Cup last year)
St. Thomas Scuba diving (there were so many things we wanted to do at St. Thomas/St. John
we wished we could have spent two days there.
St. Lucia We hired a taxi with another couple and toured the Sulphur Springs (and drive-in
volcano) and Soufriere. Originally we were going to rent a car. Thank goodness we did not
as the roads are very narrow and curvy. St. Lucia is a very beautiful island. It was nice
to be in control of our outing, not being on a tour bus.
Barbados The helicopter tour was cancelled so we caught a cab to go snorkelling.
Unfortunately, the sea was too rough and we were advised not to go into the water. So, the
taxi driver volunteered to take us for a tour of the town. In the afternoon we went to the
Harrison's Caves (ship tour). This was interesting, but we spent a lot of time in the bus,
and then waiting to go into the caves. [a lot of people complained that they
had difficulty finding the bus (at the terminal) to the caves - no HAL representative or
guide to help.
Guadeloupe We went on the tour to the water falls. This was quite a long hike and hot
& muddy. Great exercise after all the ship's food we had been eating. More time spent
in the bus.
Nassau Athol Island Snorkel Tour - awful. We sat on the ferry to take us to the island for
over half an hour. When we got there it was sheer chaos. We were mixed up with a (noisy)
group from the Romantica and didn't have some ticket that was required (HAL had no
representative or guide to help). We made our own way back to the dock after 30 mins.
Apparently, others had complained so we were all reimbursed for the trip and were told
that the tour would be discontinued for future cruises.

Although, we had cruised before we were well pleased with our experience. It was a
well-appointed ship with a good crew. The only negative was that some of the dining room
staff had a limited skill of English and it was difficult to ask about a menu item. Also
the waiters who were not your regular evening waiters did not show the same enthusiasm as
your regular evening waiters, but overall it was a very positive experience.

This was our second cruise, and the second time we used Holland America. The ship was
beautiful, the food was great,
and the service in the dining room was outstanding. We had a waiter, busboy, wine steward
and maitre de that really were
very friendly and wanted us to have everything just right.
For the second time we booked a suite which while an extravagance was really quite
wonderful. Terry robes, a walk in
dressing room and closet, plenty of drawer space and mirrors etc. And also very very
quiet. I liked the 'sound of silence'
very much at night.
They had a special luncheon and special dinner for the 36 suite guest rooms where the
Captain and many of the officers
sat with their guests. This did not happen on the first cruise, so I assume it is a new
feature for suite occupants. It was a
wonderful special meal each time, and it was nice] to get to know the officers.
We thought the shore excursions were the worst, and most of the time just bought a tour
after we got off the boat. It
seemed much cheaper that way. I wasn't too comfortable walking around these islands
without a guide other than right
near the dock, and wouldn't advise it to other seniors.
The beauty salon was all right, but very overpriced. I have short hair, and a simple wash
and blow dry was around $40.
And of course they want to sell you expensive extras that I just turned down.
I did have an upset stomach, probably ate too much, and went to the dispensary. The doctor
wasn't in, but the nurse did
give me a bottle of Pepto Bismal that did the trick for $4.
We do like the movie theater, and especially the free popcorn. Delicious even though I
have just finished dinner. No
wonder I had an upset stomach!
The exercise facilities were very good, and I used them a few times a day. Each time they
stamp your 'Passport to
Fitness', and before I left the ship I had earned a tee shirt.
They didn't have as many activities on board as I thought they should have, but I did
participate in shuffleboard, ping
pong and golf tournaments. These activities each lasted only about 15 minutes.
I like to gamble at least a little while on board, but I was turned off by the unfriendly
casino staff, and so only went into
the casino twice.
Embarkation and disembarking are made easier for suite passengers. They are given
preferential treatment, no doubt about
it. Of course you pay the price also.
We do tip rather well the next to last night of the trip, and we were very surprised that
on this trip versus the last trip on
the Statendam the cabin steward, waiter, wine steward and busboy never thanked us. Don't
know whether this is
common or not. On the Statendam the crew we tipped thanked us heartily.
Overall it was a very good trip. We are leaving the last day of August for another Holland
America trip on the Westerdam
up the East Coast from New York to Canada with about 6 stops along the way. Then in
December we are going again to
the Caribbean, different ports, on the brand new Rotterdam VI. This time I think they have
a concierge on the floor with
the suites. Anxious to see what that is all about.

This cruise ship was lovely, the entertainment was engaging with the highlight being the
special midnight performance of our
amatuer Indonesian crewmen doing native songs and dances. The dining was superb and the
outdoor grilled salmon steaks
done right at poolside are not to be missed ( don't miss the best baked beans in the world
either). My husband enjoyed the
casino and found the dealers very friendly and to add to that he had great luck at the
blackjack tables.
The cabin was very roomy and we just had a regular outside stateroom with more that enough
closet space. Our cabin
steward was always attentive. Our shore excursions were very special especially the
helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier,
which I will never forget. Overall, this ship and cruise rates an A+. A few caveats:
average age is about 60, so if you are
looking for a party atmosphere, please keep looking; the ships' photographers tend to
overdo it; lastly, when we were let out at
the Anchorage airport annex facility it was more than tedious and confusing, but not
really the fault of HAL.

The Ryndam is truly a beautiful ship and the crew maintains it impeccably. Our Alaskan
cruise was an emotional experience as the scenery and wildlife
really make you realized that you are so small in the entire ecosystem. The food was
delicious and GEDE and PARMAN were very attentive especially to my
niece - 17 and nephew - 14. The entertainment - what I went to, was very good, a
juggler/comedian and Leo Ward's magic act - most excellent. Did not
attend the banjo player or the pianist. The Ryndam entertainers were fairly talented. Only
one thing I noticed, and unfortunately so did my sister and
mother - (and we all had separate rooms) was that there was a slight urine odor in the
bathrooms. Have no idea why as the rooms seened to be very
clean. CROWS NEST - Say Hi to Rolando, Adan and Leo from Gary and Cathy as they were just
terrific. They met us the first day and from then on
remembered our names the entire cruise. The hot appetizers were excellent. Go have a drink
before dinner and enjoy the breath-taking Alaskan scenery
and witty banter of the staff. Shopping was fun on board and the ports of Ketchican and
Juneau were great too. The Sea Otter and wildlife cruise in Sitka is
a must and so is the helicopter ride to the Mendenhall. A once in a lifetime experience.
Enjoy!! and E-mail me at hudakc@ohioedison.com if you need
anymore information.

The overall rating for this cruise was good. Very clean ship, very quite stateroom. I had
a room with a private deck and the space was
plenty. The entertainment was very good. The pianist was great and the magical show was
awesome. But not every seat in the loung is a
good seat. Many seats in the balcony level was obstructed. Overall food quality is very
nice except for the room service. The food variety
for room service is very limited and the soup tastes like it was made directly from the
sea. But the food in the restaurants and buffets are
good. Most of the staffs are very friendly, but wished their English skills was better.
Embarkation was a nightmare for me. I arrived at
Seward around 7:30 PM(I was on HAL's Air/Sea program, where they arrange your flight and
transfer). When I got to the ship, all of the
staff is on duty for the life boat drill. I had to help a old lady in wheel chair up the
ramp because her husband is too old for that as well. No
staff or officer showed up to help and there was two officers standing at the entrance of
the ship. The old couple might have been injured
if no one was there to help. After I boarded the ship, no one showed me to my room. I had
to search around for a while on my own. Then I
finally found a staff member, but I was told that I should go to my room and get my life
vest and participate in the life boat drill. Well, by the
time I find my room and located the life vest, the drill was over. Not exactly a good
start. My impression of the officer countinued to worsen
in Skita, Alaska. The officer who was on duty at the tender landing site at the shore was
rude. He did not like people bring hot chocolates
(served by HAL staff), so he got a hot cup of hot cholates from a lady boarding the
tender, went up the ramp and threw that cup of hot
cholates at the feet of the staff who are serving the hot chocolates. The officer warned
the staff not to serve beverages to passenger
returning to the tenders. The language he used was not very nice and some profanity was
used. Many officers I met on board weren't
exactly the smiling friendly type either. Unfortunately these little incidents made what
was an excellent cruise down to only a good cruise.

Holland America cruises are always enjoyable with attentive staff and excellent ships. The
shore excursions are a
little expensive for what is provided - you can generally organize your own trip for less
- but they are a convenient
way of getting a quick overview of an island or place you have not visited before. The
cruise is for the most part quiet
and relaxed, which is what we like, but if you are looking for a party atmosphere then
Holland America is not for you.
If you like a relaxing, quiet atmosphere with enough activity to keep you busy but not
exhausted then we would
recommend this line. The cabins are comfortable with good facilities and the public rooms
are spacious and well
appointed.

Our Cruise with Holland America on the Ryndam was our first, but will definitely not be
our last.
The Ship: The Ryndam is a very nice ship, versy stately and well appointed. There are many
public rooms that very
comfortable. The Crows Nest was our favourite place. At 5:15 they serve hot appetizers and
they alwasy have dry roasted
nuts. The staff up there are alos very nice and very accompdating. Unfortunately we only
discovered the Explorer's Lounge
for after dinner liquers and coffee until the second to last night. Well it was probablya
good thing, since they have
chocolates and chocolate covered strawberries.
The Food: The food was okay, not great! I would not stave and I still gained 10 pounds,
but We did not think it was so
incredible.
The Staff: The staff really try very hard. They do not have the finer serving skills or
follow standard serving etiquette, but
they really do try. Some don't speak much English, but are always trying and always try to
rememeber your preferences.
The filipino and Indonesain crew come on for a year and rarely get a day off, if ever. I
felt very sorry for them. My husband
is a doctor and I though he worked long hours. The cabin steward is fantastic. They were
all great.
The Passengers: Well they are a little old. At first we felt kind of awkward, but got by
just fine. It is by no means a party ship,
We vowed to travel young, because when you get that old, you cannot really enjoy yourself.
Although that perhaps is not a
fair comment to make as many of the seniors were having a great time.
The Itinerary: We live in Jamaica so were most thrilled by Guadelopue. It was the most
culturally different. We spent the day
just walking around the town and shopping. St. Lucia was the only place we took a tour and
went to see the volcanoes. We
enjoyed that, but it felt kind of tourist trappy Coming from a tourist island we won't
criticise the others, we have many faults
too
We will definitely cruise again. in fact we are planning a cruise to China on the Nieuw
Amsterdam in the fall with my parents.
My only concern is that it is and older ship. If anyone has any comment please Email and
let me know what you think.

This was our 2nd cruise on HAL. We wer on the Veendam in Dec 97 and had great expectations
for this cruise. Overall
HAL did a good job except the food was just OK. The real problem was the passengers. HAL
had a special for Florida
residents and the ship was full of complaining old people. Nothing was good enough for
them. Their disatisfaction and
constant complaining got to the passengers and the crew both. I learned three things from
this trip. The first is to check
and make sure there are no Florida specials. The second is to take either a 1-week or
2-week cruise to asure a better
mix of ages. The third is to get a veranda if at all possible. We spent alot of time on
our veranda and really enjoyed it. A
bottle of vodka and a veranda sure mitigated the situation. I will continue to cruise with
HAL because I think they have
clean, and well organized ships. And, they provide plenty of space.
