This was our third cruise but first on Holland America. We took
advantage of a pre-cruise package at the Hyatt Pier 66 which was
a very comfortable
hotel. A representative from Holland America was at the hotel the
evening before boarding as well as the day of boarding. She
answered questions and
gave passengers their boarding number. As soon as we arrived at
the ship, we went through security and boarded immediately. The
ship is lovely. All of
the public rooms are comfortable and well appointed. There is a
quiet elegance about the ship which is very appealing. Our
veranda suite was most
comfortable. We enjoyed having fresh fruit and flowers. Our cabin
steward was excellent. We never wanted for anything. We cruise
more for relaxing
than for any other reason. The Veendam was a perfect choice for
us. Unfortunately, there was trouble in paradise. There were more
children on this
cruise than I have ever seen before and so many were just turned
loose by their parents to run amuck, which they did. Of course,
there were
well-mannered children. However, even the crew seemed in shock at
the vast number of unruly children. We were told not to judge the
ship or line by this
one cruise because Holland America has such a good name for
providing a quality cruise experience. We will sail again on
Holland America although not
in the summer of 1999 since they have pulled their ships from the
Caribbean for that summer. The food and entertainment were
satisfactory and we did
enjoy walking about on Grand Cayman. We also enjoyed the shops on
the ship. We didn't take advantage of the various shore trips not
because there
were not a variety available, but because we just wanted to enjoy
the beautiful ship.
