This was our sixth cruise, the third on Holland America, and the first time on the
Veendam.. On the positive side the boarding process was smooth and
professional. We were pleasantly surprised with the cabin. There seemed to be quite a bit
of room. We especially liked the small couch in the sitting area.
There was sufficient room for storage and the suit cases fit neatly under the bed. The
food service was as usual quite good. There were plenty of choices
however all were middle of the road. Nothing exciting or spicy here.. The buffets flowed
smoothly. The on deck burger bar was popular and very good,
although I don't understand why people want to eat hamburgers on a cruise ship. We thought
the entertainment, especially in the main show lounge, was
spectacular. The costumes were outstanding and the show staff had endless energy. We
especially enjoyed the Rosario strings in the Explorers lounge..
The captain, John Scott, was frequently seen in the public areas and always had time for a
few words, something you rarely see on other cruise lines.. The
crew was always pleasant and smiling and helpful, no attitudes here.. The medical staff
was first rate. There were several medical emergencies aboard and
the medical staff were there promptly. The out island, Half Moon Cay, is absolutely
spectacular. There are activities here for all age groups. There is also a
HELO pad on the island which unfortunately was used to life flight out a critically ill
person.. On the negative side three items stand out. First the elevator
service was completely unacceptable. At no time during the cruise did all eight elevators
work. At one time only four elevators were in operation. We were
stuck in an elevator for what seemed to be an eternity but in reality was only a few
minutes. Several other folks were also stuck in elevators during the
cruise.. The second item is the smoking policy, or lack of one. People were smoking all
over the ship, in hallways, in the elevator, in public areas, all over
the deck, throughout all lounges, and both sides of the buffet. There doesn't seem to be a
policy for smoking. The third item was the public rest rooms
were not very clean and out of supplies most of the time, especially the ladies rest
rooms.. All things considered it was a very good cruise experience.
However the next time we book a cruise we will pay attention to holiday weeks. This was
Easter week and the cruise was full of kids..
