My wife and I had the pleasure of being on the Westerdam for the week of December 13,
1997. This was a 'big band cruise' with the Glenn
Miller Orchestra being on board for the duration of the cruise. On the whole, this has
been the best of the four cruisesthat I have been on.
However, there were some items that did not meet up to my expextations and others that
exceeded them. First, the items that I thought
could have been better.
Our cabin number was 592 which came with a sofa and we thought a king size bed. Well,
there was no king size bed-just a double bed. The
sofa had numerous stains on it which certainly needed the attention of an upholstery
cleaner. The carpeting was also in the same state as
the sofa-stained and in need of cleaning. We were also disappointed that Holland Merica
could not provide us with a small refrigerator to
keep my wife's insulin cold. We had to resort to using ice which became a daily hassle for
her making sure that it had been delivered to our
cabin.
The meals on the Westerdam were all excellent along with the menu choices offered. The
dining room service was very good and our waiter
was quick to see that our needs had been met. The food at the other restaurants on the
ship was also good as to quality and choice.
The entertainment was excellent as evidenced by the fact that I did not see one person
walk out of the Admiral's Lounge while a performance
was ongoing.
One other item of importance is how Holland America handled the situation where a couples'
luggage had been lost. This happened to the
couple at our dining room table who had opted to purchase Holland America's Fly Cruise
program. Unfortunately, they did not get their
luggage until the cruise was nearly half over. This couple told us that Holland America
was sympathetic and did provide a tuxedo and a
voucher to purchase some clothing from the onboard shops. This was not Holland America's
fault as their luggage was stranded at a New
York Airport. Also, unbeknownst to us, Holladn America picked up our luggage at the
airport terminal and brought it to the ship. This was
very nice of them to do-to bad they did not tell us as we were in a frenzy for a while
wondering what had happened to it.
All things considered, if you are over forty years old, I would highly recomend that you
go on the ms Westerdam. If you would like more
