We also were on the cruise 1/2/98, and witnessed the accident from the deck while watching
departure preparations.
Someone made a mistake with the ropes (I saw it, but couldnt say exactly what the
mistake was) and one of them
exploded into a dining room window, then got caught in a propellor. As another reviewer
has said, this was a situation
made worse by the seeming unwillingness of the crew to acknowledge it. If Norwegian learns
a lesson from the event I
hope it is that you must tell people what is going on when it is obvious that something is
wrong. It was at least a half hour
after we saw this happen that we heard anything about it from the PA system and even then
it wasnt the full story. By
this time a few hundred people were watching an ambulance pull up to the ship, seeing the
commotion around the ropes
and watching a diver go under the ship. Rumors were all over the place, deaths were
speculated upon. I even heard a
statement given as if it were ironclad fact that this was due to the late-night habits of
the captain as they had been
observed by some of the passengers (I doubt it). Then people started griping about all the
little things that had been
wrong on the cruise. That led to declarations that they would never use it again, etc.
When people lack information about
something that is obviously going wrong, they begin to fill in the blanks.
We were second sitting for dinner which was half an hour late, reasonable considering the
circumstances. A couple of
people at our table found a few pieces of glass in their seats. But dinner and the usual
singing waiter festivities (I hate
that noisy kind of intrusion on my meal, but evidently Im alone in that sentiment)
went on as usual as if nothing had
happened. I guess that there was nothing else they could do, and the dinner staff had
probably lost a lot of last night tips
in the confusion of the first seating. It was just kind of unsettling.
Having said all that, its a shame this thing happened and was handled so badly
because we reallly enjoyed this ship and
the cruise. It is a very nice ship, not too large, slightly elegant, but not ostentatious,
nice outside spaces. Our inside cabin
was more comfortable than the the Sleep Inn room we had had the previous night in Florida.
It was surprisingly large,
and well served by staff. The weekend cruise is a nice one from Miami to Nassau to Key
West and back. The ship really
has to move to make the schedule which is nice if you like the sensation of actually
cruising, and making time through the
night. We were blessed with warm weather and just occassional rain, one nigh that was kind
of rough. But I like that. All in
all it was good value for our money, and a month later were really glad we took it.
My only criticism aside from all of the
above is back in the dining room. This cruise was overbooked (we heard), and dinner was
crowded. Wait staff seemed to
have too many people to pay attention to, and at our table they werent very well
coordinated so that wed get something
twice or not at all, or wait longer than usual between courses. Maybe thats being
too picky.
Nice cruise. Comfortable ship. Not the best attitude from the top. We might try them
again.
