On July 12, we cruised on the Norwegian Majesty from Boston to
Bermuda. This was our seventh cruise, and second on Norwegian. We
arrived at the
pier at noon and embarkation was trouble free. As Latitutes
members, we were able to board at 12:30. We found our cabin, 710
on the Promenade deck
to be a pleasant surprise. It was a category A cabin and more
spacious than we expected. Plenty of room for suitcases under the
bed. The room had a
refrigerator, hair dryer and an ironing board. Plenty of walking
around room compared to other cabins we have had. We did not mind
the promenade
deck. You could not see in the cabins during the day, but in the
evenings you had to keep the curtains closed for privacy. We
found it to be very
convenient especially if you wanted to grab a deck chair and
read.
The first day at sea we found the pool deck to be extremely
crowded, and there were a lot of children in the pools and
jacuzzis, which did not look
especially clean. Getting a chair was difficult it you did not
claim it early. There were a few games played around the pool and
the requisite calypso band.
The buffet lunch was nothing to rave about. Burgers, hot dogs and
fries were served at the rear, but they do not toast the rolls or
melt cheese. If you
want a cheeseburger, you put the cheese on after. The pizza
served later in the day wasn't bad.
For dinner we had the late seating and the dinners in the dining
room were good. Not 5 star food, but we didn't expect that. The
portions can be small
for those with big appetites, but there is no problem getting an
additional portion of anything. The desserts were nothing to rave
about. The quality was
so so. We were seated at table 7 and had a wonderful waiter named
Manuel Vasconcelos. He was probably the best waiter we had on any
cruise. He was
always there when you needed something, but did not hover.
The midnight buffets could go wither way. The clam bake on deck
was fabulous. Music, boiled crabs, plenty steamers and
cherrystones etc. The Midnight
Gala buffet was a disgrace. A few tables of food and those cheap
desserts!
The staff at the tour desk were great, especially Craig, the Dive
In Director. A mix up on one of the tours we purchased resulted
in a no hassle refund the
evening before the tour.
There were a few disappointments. There was no Sports Afloat
Program the week we sailed so there were no scheduled walks
around the deck or
exercise classes etc. The regular director was on vacation and
there was no replacement available. Norwegian is too large a
cruise line to let that
happen in my opinion. Also, even though they announced
complementary nachos every day in the sports bar, there was none.
They 'forgot' to supply
them for our cruise.
When we arrived in Bermuda, the weather was perfect. Docking only
in St. George's for the whole time is not the best itinerary,
especially for first time
visitors to Bermuda. As this was our fifth time to Bermuda, we
didn't think it would matter too much, but by the end of the
week, we wished we had docked
at least one day in Hamilton. We rented moped as we always do,
but made the mistake of renting from Eve's/St. Georges Livery.
The bikes are old and
ours broke down every day. If you are planning to rent a
moped/scooter, don't rent from them. Contact Oleander Cycle or
Wheels. Their bikes and
helmets are new and it is the same price. Their bikes also have
helmet storage and huge baskets. They both have web sites and you
can make
arrangements there. If you choose not to rent bikes, be aware
that taxi fare is expensive. $100.00 one way from St. George's to
the Dockyard. About
half that to Horseshoe Bay. Buses are fine, but it takes an hour
to get to Hamilton.
The return trip to Boston was marred by one storm. We had some
rough seas on Friday night into Saturday morning but it cleared
by 11:00 a.m. When
the seas are rough you will feel it on this ship.
All in all we did have a good time. I can't say that the cruise
exceeded our expectations in too many ways. You can't compare a
Norwegian Cruise to
Princess or Celebrity. If you do, you will be disappointed.
