My neice, sister, two very close friends and myself just returned from a four day cruise
to Key West,Cancun,Puerto Morelos, and Cozumel. We booked this
cruise one year in advance as a graduation gift for my neice who had attained the
Valedictorian of her senior class. We did not do the Air/Sea program.
We drove to the Port of Miami, and waited approximately 1 hour and a half to board the
ship. Once boarding and in our cabin, we noticed a memo stating
our tour had been changed due to technical difficulties. The change was not going to
Puerto Meorelos, or Cancun. To make up for our inconvenience and
disappointment we were given a fifty dollar on board credit.
We were very upset, and after calling the pursor's desk, she told us they had notified
the
travel agency month's ago and informed them of the change. Later after speaking with
numerous passengers, none were aware of the change until the
day of boarding. To add insult to injury, we all thought since our port of calls had been
changed we should get extended times at Key West and Cozumel,
but the ship thought otherwise. We were to have left the dock of Miami at 4:00p.m., we
actually departed at 5:35. We arrived in Key West at 7:00am, and
had to depart at 11:30 a.m. Stores on Key West did not open until 10:00am, leaving only
1.5 hours to shop. We were so disappointed with the time frame
we were given.
We then departed and a sailed all day. On board facilities were nice, not the best, but
ok. The Sports Bar was available for short orders
once you worked your way through hundreds of Brazilian teenagers that were standing in
line. It has been brought to my attention the NCL is the only line
that will accept tour groups of this nature. Please ask your travel agent to verify if any
groups of this sort will be on board, you will save yourself a lot of
aggravation by doing this. There were 500 Brazilian students on board, very few spoke
English, and their manners were few to be seen. In the formal
dining hall we felt as though we were at a soccer game .
The last night of dining several of the students were finally asked by the Maitre D to
please leave
after throwing food. Our schedule stated we were to arrive in Cozumel at 12:00 the next
day, and we would depart at midnight. We asked personnel if our
stay would be extended since the rest of our tour had been cancelled, and they told us no.
As par for the course, we arrived in Cozumel at 1:37, and was
not allowed to catch a boat over to the island until 3:15. We had to wait for the ship to
board the Brazilian group, and ferry them over to Cancun. They
were allowed to go to Cancun, but no one else could! I thought a riot was going to break
out. By now, we are at Cozumel with 8 hours to sightsee, shop,
or anything else. In our cabins, the air conditioning never worked. We had maintenance
down twice, and they said it was as cold as it would go. We nearly
burnt up. It never cooled below 80 degrees. There is only 1 electrica outlet in each
cabin. Always ask for a plug bar.
Our cabin steward was very prompt at
cleaning, but not an over friendly fellow. On other cruise lines, food was always
available. Not on this ship. Breakfast , lunch and dinner was in the dining
rooms, and the Sports Bar had hamburgers, hotdogs, and pizza everyday at lunch. After that
you were s.o.l. unless you ordered room service, and then
we were told we could only get juices since the dining rooms were closed. I know I sound
like a terrible person, but I am speaking from the heart. This is
the most unorganized cruise line I have ever seen. The personel was not very kind, as a
matter of fact some were very rude. The water in the cabins was
hot at all times, no cold water at all. The water in the dining rooms was salty, and
really not palatable. And you could not swim in the 14 foot long pool for
all of the students in it. There was plenty of deck space to lounge. The drinks on board
ranged from a Coca-cola @ $1.75, beer @ 2.95, and Mixed drinks
3.95 to 6.95.
The casino personel was excellent, and the majority of the slots worked. Overall, I was
greatly disappointed mainly for my neice, and our two
friends(their first time ever cruising). My sister and I have been on other cruises. By
far, I will never cruise the Norwegian lines again. Too many people
had complaints, and the cruise personel were not very customer oriented. I did want to
make one point about the medical services. Unfortunately, my
sister became ill, and the ship's nurse, and doctor were very quick to respond to her
needs. A normal office call was 40.00, and her antibiotics were
10.00. Emergencies were 100.00. The medical personel will give the patient paperwork to be
filed with your personal insurance.
