This was my 3rd cruise, and my fiancee's first. Embarkation went very smooth, and the
drinks were waiting when we got on board. We got to eat
lunch in the dining room before the ship left port. It was thrilling to leave the Port of
Alexandria, Virginia, and see the monuments behind you. And
- for those of you who commute in DC - there is nothing like tying up the Woodrow Wilson
bridge when it opens! Sweet justice!! The ship appeared
older than I expected, but when we got to our room, I was pleasantly surprised! The room
was large, there was plenty of closet space, and they
set up the bed as a double. We were right over the engines on the 4th level, and we could
hear/feel enormous vibration. It wasn't too bad, but I
would choose differently next time.
The food was excellent, much better than I had read in previous reports here. We had
lobster, shrimp, sushi, etc., very high-end meals. I throw
caution to the soup lovers though- stay away. The deserts were interesting, some good,
some mediocre. Definitely go to the midnight buffets, you'll
get to try the entrees you didn't get at dinner. We ordered more than one appetizer at a
time. What fun! We didn't get a chance to eat at LeBistro,
but they had fondue on the menu that seemed like it would be fun. Sports bar had burgers,
etc., and it was do-able.
Poolside was nice. Although this ship was small - you had a feeling of space on the ship.
The entertainment poolside was fun. Caution on the drinks
though - specify that you want refill cups, or you can wind up with the Day-Glo souvenir
cups (way over-priced). Disco entertainment was good,
except the DJ on the ship when we were there didn't play any popular dance sets , he sort
of played whatever he liked. It was actually a little
bizarre. Maybe he was new or filling in?
Art Auctions - I recommend that you try one or two of the art auctions. Some of the
artists featured you won't be able to find anywhere else. The
prices are excellent. I checked on the internet when I got back for one artist, and can't
find the pieces they had on the ship for the price they had
on the ship. If you love it, buy it! Richard Scriven was the art director when we were on
the ship - he's a little bit of Barry Manilow, with a voice like
Robin Leach (he said so himself!)
Bermuda. Ahhhh Bermuda is wonderful. We did a sailboat excursion - which took us to a
private snorkeling area. It was awesome. This is the only
way to see Bermuda - you can retreat to the ship for most of your meals (Bermuda is VERY
expensive). It is the most beautiful island I've seen
(and I lived in Hawaii for 5 years). Debarkation was great. Ship got in at 4, but they
still served breakfast in the dining rooms, with late seating at 6
am. I hope Didion can book another ship next year! We'll be on it. This was a GREAT
experience.
