This was our third annual Hockey theme cruise with NCL. Since I am a widow traveling with
my three six-foot sons, we needed four single beds in the cabin.
Our travel agent checked, double-checked, and triple-checked with the reservation agent
that this was what was in our cabin. However, when we arrived in
our cabin, there were only two single bunks and a double pull-out sofa! Luckily the ship
was not fully booked and the pier agent was able to move us to two
connecting cabins which made life much more comfortable. We had the same problem last
year, but had to settle for a cot in our cabin.
My boys play a lot of hockey and really love being on the NCL theme cruises with the pro
players. They get to know them fairly well, and we run into them all
over the ship.
I really like the size of the Norwegian Star. The past two years, the hockey cruise was on
the Norway. This ship was much easier to get around on and find
everything. The number of passengers is nicer too, and it didn't seem like it was crowded
on board. The cabins are a nice size and didn't seem at all cramped.
There were three nice size closets in each cabin so we could unpack, stow our suitcases
under the beds, and not be tripping over them.
The destinations were interesting even though we had to bypass Calica because of the
weather. That gave us extra time in Cozumel even though it was
raining. We took a cab into town ($4), shopped and ate dinner at the Planet Hollywood. The
next day the boys went snorkeling just off the pier where the ship
was tied up. There is a small beach just outside the Fat Tuesday bar where everyone went
snorkeling. Roatan was really primitive and undeveloped. The roads
were all dirt and very dusty since it hadn't rained there recently. Tabayana Beach is
beautiful with lots of beach, chairs, mats, and snorkeling opportunities. Be
careful of the coral though. In some places, it is very close to the surface and several
people went back to the ship with scratches from the coral.
All in all, the cruise was everything we expected once we got our reservation straightened
out. The photographers were very amateurish, and we didn't buy
many of the photos since they were not of good quality. Since we had changed cabins, we
did not receive the 'Welcome' baskets from our travel agent. The
purser assured me we were changed in the computer and the baskets would find us, but they
never did. I suppose the cabin stewards had some good
eating!!
I hope this review helps with your travel plans. I will probably give NCL another chance.
Little glitches can happen to anyone.
