The reason this ship has rather low marks is because the people who were on a few of the
Star's well-publicized problem cruises last year all submitted reviews.
People must remember that a ship is a floating city, and just like an apartment complex it
is going to experience heating, cooling and plumbing problems from
time to time. Of course, when you pay good money to go on a cruise, a cruise line should
offer some form of reimbursement when these problems do occur.
I traveled with my wife and three young children, and we had no problems. The ship left on
time, returned on time and hit all the ports with the exception of
Calica (because of high winds). This was fine because we sailed south a bit and had more
time to spend in Cozumel.
Not much has been written about families on this ship. There were 18 kids aboard and our
three really enjoyed the structured kid's activities. (Better in fact than
last year on the mega-ship Sensation).
Because this is a smaller ship, there was generally no lines, and more room to stretch out
and relax.
The food was good, but not great. The pizza should be offered for longer hours, and the
theater should show a few more G and PG-rated movies for the kids.
But those are about the improvements we recommend.
Unfortunately because of the earlier well-publicized incidents, I believe in the minds of
travelers and travel agents, this ship is considered by many to be
damaged goods. That's probably why NCL is replacing it with a bigger, newer ship in
Houston later this year. That's also a shame because the Star is a grand old
ship and we had a grand old time.
