Well, to answer the question… Yes, I would cruise again. I think it is the kind of thing you would enjoy
more with each time you try it. On my first cruise I tried to do too many things. Next time I will have a
better idea of what activities are the most important to me.
The Norwegian Wind has a plumbing problem. My room never had a problem, however walking down the
passageways I could unfortunately smell the problem others were experiencing. I realize people who are
not familiar with the delicate plumbing system aboard may have hindered the function however there
must be something that can be done to improve the system.
I was not impressed with the Stardust Lounge. There are one dozen support poles placed through out
the seating area. They obstruct the view from the back of the room too much. The shows were just ok.
I enjoyed my eating experiences. Servers were great and there where many choices around the ship.
Every day there was a BBQ out on deck during the afternoons. The Pizzeria was open every afternoon.
Three meals a day were served in the dinning rooms plus a breakfast buffet every morning in the Sports
Bar. I had been told the cinnamon rolls in the Sports Bar were to die for. I thought they were something I
could get off of the bread shelf at the local grocery store. There were buffets at midnight that I didn't
make it to and you could order room service 24 hours a day up until midnight of the last night. The men
at my dinner table often ordered two appetizers, two entrees and two desserts. Nobody seemed to have
a problem with that and the men loved it. The portions were small, but I liked that because I got to try
more things that way. There is so much going on that I started carrying the Cruise News around with me,
not only for the food, but also for the other many functions. There are a few things that are not on the
schedule, which is nice because those are quieter events and you will just have to explore the ship to
find them.
My room steward was just ok. He never introduced himself, was not very friendly and didn't do anything
special in our cabin. We had three people in our cabin. That was comfortable as long as we kept our
things picked up. People I spoke with that had four in their cabin seemed to be more uncomfortable and
I could see why. I slept on the convertible couch and my feet hung over the end if I didn't sleep at an
angle and three of us filled up the storage areas. My bed was very comfortable besides that.
The snorkeling tours all filled up very fast and I didn't get them. There was a lottery for cave tubing in
Belize and I did happen to get that. Belize ended up being my favorite stop. It is about an hour ride both
ways on a bus. The busses were not bad for that amount of time; however, I wouldn't want to spend all
day on something like that. Of coarse, I wouldn't like spending all day on a bus anyway. You get to a
small, nice, jungle resort, Jaguar Paw. They let you use one of the rooms (if they have empty ones) to
change your clothes. There had been no rain so the ½ hour trek carrying an inner tube was very easy.
There was no altitude gain. The hardest parts of the hike are getting down to the river from the trail and
walking across the river. I felt the river water was just right, but there were a few people (very few I
heard) who thought it was too cold. The description given about the excursion mentioned a guided walk
with plants being pointed out. I guess that was happening at the front, but there are 40 people walking a
single track trail and I missed that.
I had a little problem in Cozumel with the police. I rented a jeep right on the peer from Executive Car
Rental. Three women piled into the jeep with me and we headed for Chackanaub (not sure of the
spelling) Park. I really enjoyed the park. Then we went into town for lunch. We parked the jeep a block
back off of the main street that runs along the water. We were gone for about an hour or maybe two at
the most. When we got back the jeep was gone. The vehicles that had been parked around us were still
there, so we believed it must have been stolen. When we contacted the police they told us they had
impounded it. When we went to the station they said it had been parked illegally. They said they wouldn't
fine us, but we had to pay the $28US to cover the tow truck. I very gently and politely asked how was it
parked illegally. First they tried to tell us we were parked along a red line. We all said, 'no, we weren't'.
So, then they told us we must have been parked along a yellow line. Once again we said, 'no, we
weren't'. Then they tried to tell us we were parked too close to the corner and we told them we were
parked in the middle of the block with cars in front and behind us. They gave it one last try and said we
were parked on the wrong side of the road. Somebody asked them why they hadn't towed the other
vehicles parked in front and behind us then. I suppose there was something else we could have done,
but they still wanted the $28 and I just wanted them to go away. So in other words the police in Cozumel
are thieves.
All in all I enjoyed the trip. I will probaly try another cruise line next time so I have something to compare.
I would look for a ship that has a better crew / passenger ratio and spends more time in the ports. I did
really enjoy the age group most of the passengers fell into. The passangers seemed to mostly be in
their 30s, 40s and 50s with a few 20s and 60s thrown in there.

I was very disappointed in my cruise. I was on the Norway a few years back and loved it. The Wind just
did not meet my expectations. When boarding I was not impressed with the ship. The grand lobby was
not grand at all! The staff in general were not friendly (very unlike the Norway). Later I come to find out
they are all working 9 months with no days off, 14 hours a day! They are just too busy and under
staffed. The food was ok but being from New York I'm a bit of a critic. The Southerns and Midwesterners
seemed to like it. The ship in general was dirty. Not only was it dirty but the halls almost always smelled
like sewage. The carpets in the lobby were so stained and there was buckets everywhere for ceiling
leaks. The entertainment was awful. I couldn't stand to watch any of the shows. I also had problems with
the casino. Three times in the casino the dealers took my chips on the table when they should have paid
out (watch your chips!). The cruise directors staff conducted all these really corny, boring, annoying
games on the pool deck during the day. The shore exc. were ok. The central american islands were very
poor and not good to take children to. Cozomel was great. I wish we had more time there.
We had a bit of a scare on the ship one morning at sunrise. We lost all power (no lights, engines died). It
was scary for all of us in the inside rooms because we couldn't see at all. Then all the alarms started to
sound and people were trapped in the elevators. For the rest of the morning the ship had problems with
the engines. Due to these problems we were late to Caymen (not that we missed much).
The only good thing about the cruise was getting to know our cabin steward and waiters. They are so
hard working and have way to much to do. So don't blame the ships problems on them.
I would never sail the Wind again or maybe even cruise again in general. It was my husbands first cruise
and he hated it complaining about the cleanliness and lack of service.

Norwegian Wind 4/8/00 – 4/15/00 Exotic W. Caribbean
Grand Cayman Islands Roatan, Honduras Belize City, Belize Cozumel, Mexico
Well we just got back from our 7 day cruise and one of our first priorities was to write a review for
CruiseOpinion.com We found this site a few weeks after booking our cruise and I can not express how
much it helped us with several things throughout the trip. We booked our cruise back in February
directly through NCL. We booked an S1 category, which is a suite with a sitting area and large picture
window. We also booked the air through NCL as well. Our flight was for that Saturday the 8th but we
decided to change our flight to Friday, April 7th to Miami. Once we received all of our tickets in the mail
(about 3 weeks prior to cruising) we called our airline- US Airways and changed the flight to Friday ($75
change fee PP). This was fine by us because my friend had never been to Miami before. We left Friday
the 7th with a direct flight from Washington Dulles to Miami on Metrojet- we had great seats and I have
been on US Airways for years, never Metrojet- they have so much more room! We arrived in Miami
about 11:30am and off to our hotel in N. Miami Beach.
We actually ran into an NCL rep at the airport.
We told her we came in a day early- she said to come back tomorrow and where to meet the bus since
we had transportation included. Then we spent the day driving around in our convertible- South Beach,
Bal Harbor, etc. Great weather and lots of sun! On Saturday we arrived at the airport around 1pm- after
returning the rental car we easily found an NCL rep by the baggage claim. We had all of our luggage
and then proceeded to the bus. The driver took us to Port of Miami, which was about a 25-minute trip.
The driver pointed out numerous sites and was pretty funny. The weather had a gloomy overcast but
that sure didn’t bring us down any! We arrived at Port of Miami- there was the Carnival Triumph, NCL
Norway, and our ship the Wind. It was a beautiful ship on the outside! The driver then told us the
luggage instructions and where to go and kindly reminded us of the gratuity. The gratuity factors were
one of the things we expected due to other stories on this website. So we tipped him $2/pp and then out
to our luggage. They wanted you to see if there was anything you wanted to bring on the ship besides
what you carried on the bus.
We left our 6 bags of luggage with him and per his ‘order’ we paid $1/per
bag. So we figured $10 gratuity for all of that was well worth it. We made our way into the warehouse
(that’s what it looked like). There was a pretty long line with plenty of chairs to sit at. There were two
lines the first was to walk through the security checkpoint (like an airport) with a place to scan carry on
luggage and then a metal detector to walk through. It took about 10-15 minutes to get through that.
Then the registration line was about 20 minutes. Which was fine as we were on vacation and this was no
rush. We then met with the registration and everything was all set that we requested. We were in an S1
room- we were on the 10th deck, room 0010. We also had a table in the Terraces (where we requested)
at the main seating- 6pm. We then made our way on to the ship. Again per other stories I was not
expecting a huge formal entrance as they have on other ships or the Holland America Westerdam which
I remember. It was very nice!
This area included reception, shore excursion desk, and
pursers/accounting desk. It was very tastefully decorated. This area always stayed immaculate. We
made our way to our room- we knew it was at the front of the ship, floor 10 in front of the Stardust
Lounge. All the rooms were open so we checked ours out- it was very nice. A little smaller then what I
expected but nice. It had a queen-size bed, a sitting area that had a pull out couch and 2 chairs in front
of the picture window. There was also a 13’ white TV on top of our armoire which included 3 drawers and
a refrigerator. Much to our surprise we found a plate of fresh fruit, a chilled bottle of Champagne and a
welcome letter from our concierge- Roland. By this time it was about 3:30 PM we were set to sail after
4pm. I made my last minute calls to friends and family on my cell phone from the room and said my
good-byes. My parents are huge fans of cruising and have never been on NCL before- mainly Carnival,
Holland America, and Princess.
So they had to get all of the information about the ship! We decided to
head up stairs with our champagne for the sail-away party on deck. We went up to the 11th floor and
saw the pool and bar areas- very nice! They had some food being served in the pizzeria- we were a little
hungry so decided to grab something. It was quite chaotic inside- everyone on the ship it seemed was in
there. People were yelling and cursing and the gentleman trying to organize the line. We found it SO
surprising people were so bitter- lighten up it’s a cruise, your on vacation! We got a plate with some
pizza, salad, and pasta and headed to a table by the pool. Drink service was immediately at our table as
they were the whole trip- VERY good service. Never went thirsty that’s for sure! We ordered 2 cans of
coke and some ice (per another suggestion because the cans are $1.50 as opposed to $1.25 for a
glass filled with ice and a little soda). By the way in the registration area when you first check in there is
a soda machine with 20 oz plastic bottles of cokes, sprite, etc. For only $1.00! We put 10 bottles from
the machine in our bag and then in our refrigerator in our room- the lasted the whole week and probably
saved us some money!
After finishing our snack we had a message from the crew stating a plane with
35 passengers was delayed and should be at the ship around 5pm so we were to set sail at 5:30pm. We
were happy with this as we could check out the ship some more. We saw the Stardust Lounge, Monte
Carlo Casino- the restaurants- Terraces, Sun Terraces, and Four Seasons dining room. We then went
up to the Sports Bar on Deck 12 and found a table out back. We ordered some frozen drinks and
awaiting the departure. It happened shortly after 5:30 and we were on our way! We stayed on deck 12
for a while waving to everyone and then decided to try and make it to dinner by 6pm. I won’t go through
each meal (day by day) this should hopefully sum it up. Our waiter was Mike he had been with NCL for
17 years! His experience defiantly showed and was always very pleasant and always wanted to know
what we did that day.
Our assistant waiter Herman was also very kind, and extremely friendly. Our wine
stewardess (she gets your drinks at dinner from the bar) was Mariza from the Philippines- she was
incredible! We saw her all the time on the ship- serving drinks for dinner, for the evening parties or just
bumping in to her. She told us wonderful stories about her home in the Philippines. We even got a card
from her to keep in touch. Our Maitre D- Victor was also very helpful. He helped get us a table for 2 after
our table for 8 no one else ever showed up! He checked in with us ever meal to make sure everything
was ok and how our day was. Overall the food was good. The had a lot of variety and the contrary to
what I heard the servings were plenty. Two of the nights we ate in Le Bistro. Again per others stories
they raved about this and we would have to agree. They have the same menu everynight but it was
good! Both times I had the Steak Diane and French Onion Soup. If you are a chocolate lover- get the
chocolate decadence! The tiramasu was also good. O
n to the ports of call- Our first Grand Cayman we
signed up for the ‘Discover Cayman’ excursion- we went on a motor coach to a Sea Turtle Farm (very
nice), ‘Hell’- not impressed- but fun to send postcards from, and Tortuga Rum Factory Store- we bought
5 bottles plus some rum cake!! We also saw a conch shell house- overall a nice tour of Grand Cayman.
We then had plenty of time to do some more shopping or grab lunch. Our second day- Roatan,
Honduras we were a little skeptical on this being a third world country and all but I will tell you this had to
be one of our favorite places. We took to ‘Roatan Highlights’ tour, we HIGHLY recommend this! A little
minivan meets you at the dock- and you start your tour. You first see the town and all of the shops. It is
very, very poor. But you really have to appreciate how they have not ‘Americanized’ this island.
Everyone was smiling and very friendly waving to us as we passed through. We went to the Roatan
Airport tower first- the stairs you have to climb weren’t the problem- if you are claustrophobic- avoid
going up the tower!
Next we went to see iguanas- a lot of fun. Some of them were huge! We then drove
around some more- they have several beautiful beaches. They are also building a lot of new homes- the
guide said they ranged from $400-$800k! They were really nice though. We next went to the beach
where we had some fruit punch and then had about 2 hours on our own. We went and got some
snorkeling equipment and swam out on our own. Didn’t see too many fish but there was a lot of coral
and underwater formations. After that we headed back to the ship. The tour lasted 1 ½ hours longer
then it was scheduled but we were back in plenty of time. We were tired and went to our room. Our third
day- Belize City, Belize we had no excursion plan (which we now regret) we tendered in from the ship to
the island- there was nothing to do. A little area with some shopping and drinks. They did have a band
playing, which we enjoyed.
We did some shopping, took some pictures and then headed back to the
ship. Our fourth day- Cozumel, Mexico we signed up for the Mexican Fiesta Party Cruise. It started at
9am. Let me tell you if you want to drink, party and have a great time this is for you! Everyone from our
age (22) to 85 was drinking! The guys on the ship were hilarious! We headed to Playa Del Sol where we
had 2 hours to lay on the beach or water sports. We rented a wave runner and had a good time (except
when we flipped it, but that’s another story). The beach was absolutely heaven- white sand, crystal blue
water. They also had a pool, several bars and a very good restaurant! We then headed back on the
boat- this was PURE party time. Had conga lines- where they kept pouring tequila when you passed
under the guy, they had lots of margaritas and rum punch! Everyone had a wonderful time. They also
have shopping on the ship- I bought a huge black/gold sombrero, 2 marionette puppets, Mexican
blanket all for under $40!
Once we got back (per everyone I know) request- we headed (or stumbled) to
Carlos and Charlie’s. What a party place! We ordered two daiquiris, which were in one-yard plastic
containers- it, took forever to finish and they were LOADED with rum! Be careful! We then went and did
MORE shopping- the best place we found to shop and also highly recommended by the ship was Three
Shop Emporiums. We bought t-shirts, wind chimes, onyx chess/checkers sets, onyx fruit, hemp carrying
bags, tequila and much more for VERY good prices. Our first day and last day at sea was incredible-
lots of sun, good music, and activities. We especially like the art auctions and trivia games. Trust me you
can never get bored or not have a good time on the ship. Every evening they had a show. They had
Gary Carson (magician/comedian), Jeff (comedian), and George Solomon (singer). They were ALL
wonderful- Jeff and Gary were both hilarious! The 3 shows by the Jean Ann Ryan company were ok.
Two of the shows were Smokey Joe’s Café and the last night was Sea Legs Circus at Sea- which was
incredible!! Overall this trip was very relaxing and we had a wonderful time. We do think the quality of
the food could be improved and the buffets were nothing to write home about- but it was good, just not
great. The shows had a lot of variety- but the Jean Ann Ryan company should definitely stick to dancing
and not singing!! Several people commented on their off key and pitch voices. The staff of the Wind was
overall very good- the bar and restaurant service was great!
The cruise directors Peter and assistant
director Julie were very nice and had a lot of energy and seemed to try and be genuine. The art director
Gordon was very interesting and had good stories to tell. The port/cruise consultant Rachel was not our
favorite person- she had a very uppity attitude and seemed to talk down to everyone- but I don’t deal
with people like that so we avoided everything that she did. I will also make the same comment here as I
did to NCL- several times we saw the crew/staff off the ship where they were drinking and smoking a lot-
which is fine but several other people found it unprofessional. I somewhat agree. I know they basically
‘live’ on the ship but they shouldn’t act so obnoxious when in big public places. The disembark was very
smooth- off by 9:30am and at the airport by 10am. We HIGHLY recommend taking a taxi. The line for the
buses was very long! The flight home was at 12:30 so we had time to check in and have a bite to eat
with no rush. We would definitely cruise NCL in the future although it seemed to cater to an older crowd
we had a good time and couldn’t beat the deal we got! We are definitely going to be researching for our
next vacation though! Please write me with any questions or comments.

What a disappointment!!! I have sailed before on the Norway and love it so I decided to try the Wind. Big
Mistake. Never again. To start with, the appearance of the ship was not what I expected. It was not at all
glamourous and was actually dirty! Throughout the entire cruise the hallways smelled of sewage. The
carpeting on the entire ship was so stained it looked like the rugs had huge wet spots all over them. Also
through out the hallways buckets collected leaks from the ceilings. I was completely disgusted at the
state and SMELL of the ship! My disappointed continued. Lines, lines, lines...everywhere. It was always
a hassle to get something to eat. I have to admit it did get better toward the end of the cruise but I felt
like I was always on line. As for the food it could have been better. It was along the lines of decent
cafeteria food. But I did hear some of the passengers enjoying the food. Maybe being for New York it
makes me sort of a critic when it comes to dining.
Now about the service...Not Enough! The ship was
completely short staffed. I did not experience the great service I had on the Norway. I later found out that
the staff had been at sea for 9 months, 12-14 hour days with no break! They took a lot of abuse from
the passengers which later I felt bad about. I also had some problems with the casino staff. Three times
a dealer took my chips from the table when she should have paid out. When I expressed my concern
she replied, 'We all make mistakes.' So my advice: Watch your money! The credit desk was not much
better. You need to sign for everything on the ship and then at the last day settle your account. I had a
problem with my statement because I was being charged for dry cleaning but the cleaner ruined all my
garments. When I told credit I was not paying for the charges they said I needed to come back the
following day for check out to dispute the charge.
The next day at 5AM!!!! Are they kidding! needless to
say I went back to find a line wrapped around the hallways. I was also not thrilled with the cruise
director's staff. They were so nasty and annoying. They seemed so bothered when someone asked a
question or expressed a complaint. Also they conducted all these really boring, corny games on the sun
deck during the day. It was so distacting and not entertaining at all. That leads me to the
entertainment...Unwatchable! I couldn't sit through one show maybe with the acception of the comedian.
Also if you want to take any tours book them the moment you step on the ship. Within an hour it seemed
all the tours were booked. This was really fustrating because 2 stops where to Central America. I was
not comfortable touring these island on my own. I felt a bit uncomfortable which the conditions. Also if
you don't book a tour you don't get off the boat. Well at least untill all the other guests with tours get off.
I felt so trapped! And to top it off we had engine troubles! One morning we found ourselves in the dark.
It tooks minutes for the generators to click on. For us stuck in elevators and insides rooms this caused
some panic. We were late to Grand Caymen because of this outage. The engine also died. The only
good thing I can say about the Wind is I loved the pool wait staff. They where fun, friendly always
around. I would never sail the Wind again. It is a shame because this was my husbands first cruise and
he hated it and will never cruise again. I wish I took him on the Norway!
