Alaskan Cruise on the Wind. I joined my Mom aboard the ship as I
live in Las Vegas and she traveled from Chicago. It was a great
way for us to spend
some time together. Our cabin on deck 6 forward had plenty of
room for two women with more clothing than they could ever wear
in a week. Our room
had a cozy sitting area with a love seat, chair, ottoman, table
with a small unit with the TV and a few small drawers and shelves
to put all your odds and
ends. It was a great place to relax and watch the Alaskan
scenery, which you could see no matter what side of the ship the
cabin was on. Our dining
room was The Terraces. Lucky for us we managed a table by the
window. Our waiter Rolando and all the Terraces crew were just
delightful and our
choices of entrees were always a treat. The only occasion I can
remember that I wasn't satisfied was a steak that was not cooked
to my taste. The open
seating for breakfast was a nice way to meet other passengers and
everyone was always friendly. We enjoyed the many English
passengers especially.
Our last night on the ship our table of six decided to dine in
the Bistro. Don't wait until the last day to check it out as it's
definitely worth a second trip.
Although the waiter was not our favorite Rolando and seemed at
times slow delivering our courses we all decided there was need
to hurry, as there was
no late seating passengers waiting for our table. The shore
excursions offered a little of everything depending on your
wallet size or your age. Our group
did the Taku Lodge Trip. I would recommend this for any age. The
trip included flying in a pontoon plane over a glacier on the way
to the lodge. The lodge
over looked some spectacular views including a glacier on the
other side of the lake. The dinner cooked by the staff at the
lodge was great., with an
added treat of a bear visiting the grill where the salmon was
cooked. He spent at a lot of time eating the grease & sand
and it gave everyone the
opportunity to take a video and pictures. I went off on my own in
Skagway and Ketchikan to do a hike and float and kayaking. The
guide for the hike and
float was interesting and went the extra mile taking extra time
and stopping at places not included on our trip. The Shows on the
Wind were packed with
talent. The only down side was all the kids going up and down the
isles. I thought N.C.L. did a great job with the variety of shows
they provided every
evening. I managed to make five out of seven shows. I
particularly enjoyed the open lounges and bars on the ship. The
Observation Lounge was a great
place to view the Glaciers. The weather kept the passengers from
enjoying being outside on deck 12, there was lots of room to
lounge and read or catch
a nap, take a dip in the pool or play on the basketball court.
Over all N.C.L. does a great job. The Wind carries the right
amount of passengers and is the perfect size ship. I was hoping
for a bigger crowd of
passengers in the age group of thirties to forties, single or
couples without young children along. It would have been a great
place to meet people and
have some great dancing and parties in one of the lounges. I've
been on two cruises, both with N.C.L. so I cant compare it to
another cruise line. I do
know more than one guide on our port trips commented on the
people who cruise with N.C.L. are definitely the most enjoyable
groups to guide for. All the
passengers make friends with one another and before the end of
the trip there best of friends. Some advise, make sure your
package includes
transportation from the airport to the ship is a must. I arrived
at 2:30 P.M. the last NCL bus leaves at 2 p.m. at the cost of
$10.00. Taxi fare was $25.60
Canadian Currency not U.S. I gave the driver $30.00 U.S. Currency
not realizing I gave the driver a very nice tip.
