This was our first cruise. My husband went along reluctantly and to his surprise this was
his favorite vacation ever. We arrived
at Canada Place to board the ship about 3:00 for sailing at 5:30PM. I was expecting long
lines to check in but to our surprise
we only had to wait a few minutes. Once on board someone pointed us in the right direction
to our cabin where the steward
was waiting to let us in. All our luggage was in the room. We had a refrigerator in the
room which was very nice. The rooms
were spacious and the beds were comfortable. At dinner we were seated at our assigned
table with a family of three. They
had a 10 year old son and we have a 10 year old daughter. Obviously someone had done their
homework on placing people
with appropriate age groups. We enjoyed getting together with our table mates on deck and
in the hot tub which made the
cruise even more enjoyable. Our waiter in the dining room, Jamie from Portugal, was
wonderful. If we asked for a sample of a
second dinner item, he would just bring a full dinner in addition to our regular order and
kept bringing more til we said 'no
more'. Two other waiters, Angelo & Gennaro from Italy, who we had at open seating
breakfast were cute and considerate. We
took our daughter to the kids program where she met some girls her age. At that point our
daughter discovered the feeling
of independence. She and her new found friends were together most of the time when we were
at sea. We enjoyed many of
the shore excursions. We had a full week in Alaska without a drop of rain. However, in
Ketchikan our Misty Fjord Seaplane trip
was cancelled due to fog so we took a 1 hour bus trip of the town. In Juneau we took a
helicopter ride to a glacier and walked
on the glacier, and did the Mendenhall River Rafting Trip. In Skagway we did the Streetcar
Tour and the White Pass Train Trip.
All of these were worthwhile. We only had one hour of rough seas; other than that it was
calm. Glacier Bay and College Fjord
were magnificent. They had a naturalist on board who gave talks about the wildlife and
areas we were visiting. In Glacier Bay
they had a Park Ranger board the ship and give a talk; then he answered questions.
Disembarking the Crown was painless
but sad. We went to breakfast at 7:00AM, went back to our cabin, grabbed our belongings
and waited for about 1/2 hour to 1
hour to disembark and board a bus to Anchorage. Our bus driver from Princess was very
informative about Alaska and he
stopped en route to give a short talk about his family's life in Alaska. He showed items
of clothing his kids wore in the winter
and explained the reasons why certain types of fur were used around the face. We are
anxious to take another Princess
cruise.
