The Ship: This was our third time on the Crown Princess. She is a nice ship but does not
have the glitz and glamour of the
new mega-liners coming on line (this may be a good thing or a bad thing, depending upon
your perspective.) They have
made some modifications to the ship (extended the Sun Deck and remodeled the buffet area
to offer an alternative
restaurant in the evenings.) Otherwise, the Crown remains the same. She has nice, large
cabins stocked with plush bath
robes, hair dryers, personal safe, TV (gets CNN, ESPN and other movie channels) and plenty
of storage space. The Crown's
cabins are noticeably larger than the equivalents on the Dawn or Sun Princess.
The Service: We received extraordinary dining room and stateroom service! Our waiter
(Valentin from Romania), assistant
waiter (Gabor from Hungary) and head waiter (Salvatore from Italy) were incredible.
Salvatore was also a wild man, so be
prepared to have fun if you are in his section.
Food: I happen to really like Princess food. If you like Princess food, you would have
liked the offerings here. If not, then you
would not have liked the food. The pastas are excellent as is the Pizzeria. I did not try
the alternative restaurant (The
Bistro) but it is good to have it around in case you don't want to or can't go down to the
dining room.
Entertainment: The production shows on Princess are excellent ("Let's Go To The
Movies," "Odyssea," "Pirates," etc.). The
guest entertainers we had were pretty good (2 guest singers, a comedian [Alan Kent], a
magician and a juggler.) While I
have seen and heard better, these folks did keep me entertained.
The bands in the lounges were some of the better ones we have had -- especially the jazz
group which played at Kiplings
and the Love Boat orchestra.
The disco was packed on New Year's Eve, dead on the 2 rough sea days and moderately full
the rest of the time. The DJ
was good at playing requests. We had a fun time in there each night.
Ports:
Cartagena: We rented an air conditioned cab w/ English speaking driver for $20 per person
for a 2 1/2 hour tour. Much
better than the ship's tour.
Limon: I've been there before, so I stayed aboard ship. You can skip this port for all I
care. Those who wanted to invest an
entire day touring did enjoy their tours -- but 8-10 hours is a long time. Do the ship's
tours if you do anything and be
careful in downtown Limon.
Canal: Awesome! Try to see this once in your lifetime.
San Blas Islands: The ship's tenders drop you off at one of the three islands. A one hour
walk around should suffice. No
tours offered here and none needed. The ship did not stay here long.
Cozumel: My favorite. I've done the tour thing before, so we just walked around downtown.
Cozumel has great beaches if
that is up your alley.
Conclusion:
I really enjoyed this cruise. From the food to the service to the plentiful at sea days,
this trip was very relaxing. Although
most pax were on the older side, New Years and Christmas cruises draw a wide range of pax.
I do like the Sun and Dawn Princesses more, but we were quite satisfied with what we got.
