My wife and I took a thirteen day land tour/cruise. We were very impressed with the
embarkation and disembarkation process compared to our
experience with those we have taken in the past. The most negative experience I had was
having to wake up early the first full morning on the ship to sign
up for the entire week's selection of day excursions. These were offered on a first
come/first served basis. I was in line at 6:20am and was the 41st
person in line. The registration was held just as we were entering the College Fjord area,
so I would have preferred to look at the glaciers! On our other
cruises, passengers could sign up for these tours prior to sailing. The ship was
beautiful, but the scenery was even better! Another slight negative was the
process for ordering wine for dinner. Instead of a wine steward, the ship encouraged
passengers to order wine from the wine telephone line that they
had established. The waiters could take orders also, but they did not necessarily have the
expertise that a wine steward would have. The food was
certainly acceptable, but the better evening meals were served toward the end of the
cruise. We particularly enjoyed the excursions including the
helicopter/glacier walk in Skagway, the wildlife cruise in Juneau and the Misty Fjord
Flightseeing tour in Ketchikan. We packed enough clothes for the entire
trip after reading the comments about the lack of sufficient laundry facilities. Each time
we passed the laundry room there seemed to be a back-up.
Overall, we would recommend the Dawn Princess, but would certainly consider others.
