As a reference point...The last two years I've been crusing with Royal Caribbean on the
Monarch of the Seas. My expectation of Princess was that
this would be a step up from RCL however this was not true at all. I thought that their
would a mixed age group on this cruise, much like RCL,
however it was mostly seniors. The Dawn Princess is a wonderful ship. It's clean and the
staff is very professional. Service was equal to Royal
Carribean. The room was clean and the cabin steward, Rolex, was friendly and helpful. My
cabin was in the front of the ship on the Carib deck (9th). I
was rockin' and rollin' all week. I attributed this to the poor weather however the noise
from items moving around in the storage area was disturbing.
The cruise itinerary consisted of Aruba, La Guaira, VE, Grenada, Dominica and St. Thomas.
Most of the islands were beautiful and very different. I
don't understand why anyone would visit La Guaira. The place is depressing. The crew
members suggested that passengers stay on the boat. Some
brave cruisers did venture out to spend some time in this port but returned quickly when
they spotted the police carrying machine guns with bullet
proof vests. (not the vacation paradise that I envisioned) The rain forests and waterfalls
in Dominica and Grenada were interesting. Locals were
friendly however the cab drivers in Grenada were agressive, swarming the passengers as
they left the ship. Winds were quite strong in Aruba so our
group abandoned the beach and had a wonderful time in town at Senor Frogs and Carlos and
Charlies. St. Thomas is always fun with great shopping
and beautiful beaches. I would recommend the Antiqua, Barbados, St. Maarten, Martinique
and St. Thomas itinerary. The service in the dining room
was exceptional. Our waiter, Benji, and assistant waiter fit right in with our group and
were bantering with everyone. They were very attentive and
professional. The food was disappointing. The appetizers, soups, salads and pasta's
however plentiful were attractive but tasted bland. Fish was
always on the menu. The three best main courses were the lobster, prime rib and beef. The
food is far better on Royal Caribbean. As for breakfast in
the dining room... Again, excellent service but disappointing food, especially the Eggs
Benedict which were offered only once during the cruise. I
would recommend the salmon, fresh and plentiful for breakfast. Lunches on the deck were by
far the best meal of the day with a wide variety of
stews, pasta's, salads, meats, and speciality dishes. The disco was empty most nights and
the entertainment in the showroom was pretty good.
Again, I enjoyed the variety and name entertainment on Royal Caribbean.
