I sailed on the Island Princess on a three day repositioning cruise from Vancouver to San
Francisco. Although she was dwarfed by the larger, newer ships at the Vancouver port, I
had a
wonderful time on this ship. She is very well maintained, and carpets and some furnishings
are
almost new. The Princess Theatre was the most beautiful movie theatre I have seen on any
ship.
The casino, tho small, has all gaming activities, and there is a nice disco tucked away in
the
back. The dining room was very attractive with new carpets and was very spacious compared
to
some larger ships I have sailed on. Our outside cabin, tho somewhat small, was very quiet
and
our request to fix the air conditioning was answered almost immediately. Somewhat
dissapointing
were the on deck food service areas - these seem to have been added later, as was the
small
gym, which was about the size of a large walk in closet. All of us in our party really
came to love
the Island Princess - a classic liner that is kept in very good shape with a friendly crew
and nicely
refurbished facilities.

The World Cruise, overall, was very good. The dining room staff and the cabin attendants
were certainly excellent. The food, while
perhaps not 5 star, was certainly very good. There was Filet Mignon, Alaska King Crab,
caviar, etc. at frequent intervals. The
Boutique sold liquor at duty-free prices for shipboard consumption, but, I understand has
changed that policy...only selling
miniatures at $3.50 each...(the bean-counters at work!) The cabins on Fiesta Deck Aft,
tend to be somewhat noisy since they
are located just above the engine room. At one point, the toilet came loose from the wall
and had to be repaired by the crew
which took all day. We knew the size of the cabins, of course, but if anyone believes the
cabin size to be comparable to those
shown on the Love Boat TV series, they are dreaming! One irritating thing is the use of
what is called the Bridge Lounge. This is
an area devoted to instruction in the game of bridge. Each day, that pasageway used by all
passengers, was closed to all but
bridge players inconveniencing everyone else. After every cruise, the ship circulates a
questionaire seeking comments on the
plusses or minuses of the trip. But never do we hear how any suggestions are put in place.
