This cruise started in Rome and ended in Bombay via Kusadasi, Rhodes, Haifa, Port Said,
Djibouti, and Oman. Originally scheduled ports of Luxor
and Yemen were cancelled due to recent terrorist activity. New ports of Kusadasi and
Djibouti were substituted. The Island Princess is showing her
age, but is still a pleasant ship on which to travel. The cabins are small and there are
few of the modern amenities the newer ships offer. Food
variety and quality was good, but not great. Service was excellent is all regards. The
entertainment was as good as any we have ever seen on a
ship. The highlight was a folkloric performance by a troupe of Israeli dancers on the ship
while in Haifa. The ports were interesting, but the substitute
ports were not good replacements for those deleted. We were the first cruise ship ever to
stop in Djibouti. It was not much of a tourist destination.
There were no tourist facilities, and tour guides had to be shipped in from Cairo. The
stops in Israel and Egypt were fascinating. Jerusalem,
Bethlehem and the Great Pyramids were the touring highlights of the trip. The visits to
Oman and Bombay were of interest, but not destinations we
would repeat. This cruise ranked somewhere in the middle of the 32 we have taken. We were
glad we went, but wouldn't repeat the itinerary.
