This cruise in almost every respect met or exceeded my expectations. In spite of her age
the Royal Princess is exquisitely maintained and is a beautiful ship. I
had a cabin with verandah which is a great luxury. The cabins on this ship are very small,
but the verandah was some compensation. I found the staff to be
exceedingly friendly and helpful, particularly the cabin steward. The service in the lido
cafe was spotty, sometimes good, sometimes awful. Same applies to the
food there. They could do a better job providing palatable hot food in the lido. Thank
goodness for the pizzeria. Food and service in the dining room were
good, but not fantastic. The ship was full but never seemed crowded, and all activities
seemed well organized, including embarkation and disembarkation
which went very smoothly. The entertainment on board was terrible. The cruise director was
very talented but he couldn't carry it all himself. I had expected
much more in the way of port lectures. the itinerary was outstanding. I have no compalints
about any of the ports other than to wish we had longer stays in
each. I did none of the shore excursions, preferring to make my own arrangements. I found
this to be very successful for the most part, but does require
some advance planning so you don't waste valuable port time. I hired my own guide with car
and driver in St. Petersburg, which was a wise move. The
language and cultural obstacles in Russia are too significant to overcome alone. However,
in every other port I had no difficulty making my way around on my
own. I would not hesitate to recommend this cruise to anyone
