The Norwegian Fijord itinerary, done one a season by the Royal Princess is one of the most
scenic and breathtaking cruises available. With the ultimate stop
at Nordkap Norway, the top of the world, each other port compliments the Norwegain life,
culture and natural beauty. Swimming in the heated pool with the
Midnight Sun blazing, taking the well planned shore excursions and experiencing the
Norwegian way of life were the highlights of this cruise. The Royal
Princess is showing it's age in some of the public areas, ie: carpeting and furniture.
However the ship's size of 1200 passengers and it's welcoming staff
soon compensate for any shabbiness.
The Royal has adapted the alternative restaurant venue, offering passengers wishing to
skip dinner in the dining
room, a good option. A menu that is changed every other day, and a casual envrionment make
this an excellent option. Be warned however, that they do
use the Bistro Restaurant as a training area for new wait and bus staff. This leads to
some confusion. A gratuity to the staff here should be left, as they do
not share in the dining room tips. $3-$5 per couple is considered just fine. We enjoyed
having a movie theater, with very recent American and British films
showing 2-3 times a day. It is a nice break from the show lounges. The entertainment on
board is fairly common, and we had seen the comedian and
jugglers on two other cruise lines.
There was a very good pianist in the lounge nightly. The casino is struggling. This was
not a gambling crowd, but those
who did try their luck found the casino cold and unmerciful. They quickly abandoned it,
and by the last few days, it was almost empty most nights. The hair
dryer and in room safe are nice additions to the cabins. Cabin carpeting needs to be
redone, as it is wearing severly. One of the pleasures of the Royal
Princess is the fact that all cabins are outside. There are even a few balcony cabins, but
even the lowest priced cabin has a window, although some may be
obstructed by a lifeboat. T
here were a number of wheelchair cruisers aboard, and all efforts were made to
accomodate them. There was a crawler chair
available for disembarkation. When tenders were used this was not possible. The age group
of the travelers was between 40-80. There were also a number
of families with older children on board. There were also a few young children sailing,
but the children's program was rather poor according to the parents I
asked. All the pools were heated to 80-95 degrees, and although the wind was often raw,
many passengers enjoyed a midnight swim in full sunlight.
