Although my husband and I have cruised five times previous, 3 on Princess ships, this was
the first cruise we have taken that exceeded seven days. The itinerary was: San Juan, St.
Thomas, Martinique, Grenada, Caracas, Curacao, Panama Canal and Acapulco.
Although this ship is 13 years old, it is a beauty. We prefer to stay away from the
megaships because we like a lot of open deck space and the feeling that you aren't
shoulder to shoulder with everyone else. This ship is it. With 1196 passengers, we didn't
even have a problem with long lines at the Lido buffet. The LIdo is a typical cruise ship
buffet. In our opinion, it is usually worth taking the time to go to the dining room for a
much better quality meal. The dining room is excellent, particularly the pastas that are
always on the menu. Service was the best we have ever experienced both in the dining room
and from our room steward.
We had a mini-suite with a balcony and found the room extremely spacious (for a cruise
ship). The amount of room made it easier for us to enjoy being in the same place for 12
days. This is a super trip but because of its length and possibly the itinerary, it is
definitely for the mature market. At 50 and 59, we were definitely on the young side of
the average age. The Panama Canal is the obvious highlight of the trip and a definite
marvel of man's ingenuity. It was a very hot and humid day when we made the 7 hour canal
transit but the decks remained crowded throughout.
My only complaint, as is usual with cruise packages, was the air arrangements. The times
are chosen without much regard to the passenger's convenience. We had a four hour flight
out of Newark, NJ that left at 7:05 a.m. when the ship didn't leave San Juan until 11 p.m.
that night. Also on the return flights from Acapulco to Dallas and then Dallas to Newark,
the line had not bothered to give us seats together and due to full bookings we weren't
able to change that. Minor annoyance however at the end of what was a memorable trip.
Princess did it up great for us once again and the Royal Princess is now my favorite
cruise ship!
