We flew into Anchorage, and were met by Princess staff as we exited the airplane. They
were very well organized from square one. The 3 hour trip by bus from Anchorage to Seward
was better than anticipated, due to the bus driver's informative comments.
Our first stop aboard ship was the pizza parlor, which was excellent. Our bags were in our room by the time we finished our snack, and we unpacked into 3 large closets, a large chest of drawers, and two smaller storage chests. The room was neat and clean, and large enough for us, although we spent very little time in our stateroom.
Dinners were quite good, considering that they were feeding 600 at a time. One has a choice of about 3 appitizers, 3 salads, 4 desserts and 6 or 7 main dishes each evening. Our favorites were the caviar, escargot, lobster, and baked alaska. Dining room service was excellent. Breakfast and lunch were similarly varied, but we often opted for the buffet on deck 8 for breakfast, or the snack bar on deck 10. There were only 7 children on board, out of 1222 passengers, and the average age was 65.
Entertainment was aimed at this audience, and we enjoyed the shows and lounge acts. The medical staff consists of 2 physicians and 2 RN's, and head doctor Sally Bell would be our choice for a family doctor if she would move here! We hit rough weather the second day out, and I heard that she was rather busy with cabin calls. This is the last steam ship ever built, and so is quieter than average. Because of this, perhaps, we could hear our neighbors TV and conversations (our sole complaint). Several times, the toilets refused to flush, but each time the problem was corrected within an hour. Could be the aging of this 1984 ship.
Our cabin steward was the brightest spot on our cruise - he was outstanding. We napped in the early afternoon, and once I returned to the cabin soon after having forgotten my camera. The beds had already been remade! After the 1st day, he had our coffee at our door at 7 AM sharp! Everyone on the staff had a great attitude toward the passengers; even the plumber asked if we were enjoying our cruise. The bar waiter remembered my name the second day, and knew my drink. We found the ship to be very clean in every area we saw. Those who saw the kitchen were amazed at the cleanliness there, too.
We did not use the ship's excursions, except for the final day, when we took the short tour of Vancouver. We arranged our own helicopter flight onto the Mendenhall Glacier thru Coastal Helicopters of Juneau via the internet. A great experience I recommend to everyone! Our next cruise may well be to Alaska again, and we would recommend the Sky Princess.
