Overall, this was a great cruise. We had never been to Alaska and found it quite breathtaking. The Star Princess was a nice ship but looked like it needed a refurbishment. We noticed quite a bit of wear & tear. The decor seemed plain and very monochromatic.
We felt the service was outstanding in the dining room. The food was a pleasant surprise, particularly the soufflés & pastas. My husband is a big seafood eater and thought the fresh fish was great. I will add that every baked potato (and I had one every night) I was served wasn't hot enough to melt my butter. Overall, though, the food was surprisingly good and consistent.
Our cabin was very roomy, with lots of drawer space. Unfortunately, the cabin creaked a lot and kept my husband awake. I did feel that the bathroom was too small, and there wasn't enough storage space for my toiletries.
We enjoyed the scenery, but felt the shore excursions were expensive. They were breathtaking - on the Taku Glacier & Scenic Wilderness Cruise($76.00p.p.), we saw an adult and baby whale breach (jump out of the water), and our camcorder recorded every awesome moment. We also went on the Flightseeing trip to Misty Fjords ($159.00p.p.). This was my favorite. The Klondike Bicycle Tour ($69.00) was exhilarating. Although we did not do it, we heard the Salmon Bake excursion was fantastic, and at about $23.00, a bargain.
The entertainment was varied and pleased most everyone over 40. One night there was an excellent Chinese acrobatic act and a singer/dancer from the t.v. show "Fame". Other entertainment featured lounge singers and piano players.
The crowd was mainly 60+, and the majority of activities and entertainment were geared towards them. Not a lot to do for people under 30, but this is to be expected on a Princess Alaska cruise. Everyone, young and old, was having a fantastic time enjoying the beautiful Alaska scenery and great Italian cuisine. One tip - stake out your deck spot early in the a.m. the day you traverse College Fjords and Glacier Bay. Also, bring warm heavy coats, gloves, and earmuffs!
Overall, we had a great time and would definitely not hesitate to go again. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to explore Alaska.
