I took my first cruise on the Sun Princess along with a fellow retiree and my 12 year old
niece. I thoroughly enjoyed the cruise experience,
especially the fact that it is not necessary to pack and unpack each night. I was very
surprised at the size of the stateroom (we had booked an
outside with balcony). I had expected two single beds with one pull down for the third
person. Very surprised to find four "bunks". The size of the
ship would indicate slightly larger staterooms. Bathroom uncomfortably small IMHO. I was
surprised at the "mix" of passengers on board. My 12
year old niece had the time of her life! The director at the teen club, Martin, allowed
her to join even though she wasn't quite 13. She made several
new friends with whom she is keeping in touch via the "net". Martin did an
outstanding job with all the teens on board.
Many of the passengers were extremely inconsiderate in that they "hogged" all
the tables in the Horizon Court to use for sightseeing instead of
eating. It was very difficult for those of us who actually wanted to have our meal to find
a place to sit.
We had the second seating in the Regency dining room and were served by two of the most
pleasant waiters--Fernando and Luis. I was a little
disappointed by the food selection on some of the nights and expected the setting of the
table to be a little more "formal"--more silverware.
The food in the Horizon Court was good, but not outstanding. I was, however, very
impressed with how hard the waiters and all the crew work to
please us passengers. I certainly hope there is some means of tips allocation to include
the people who work in restaurants other than main dining
rooms.
I thought the entertainment was, at best, mediocore. The performers work very hard at what
they do. It just isn't very entertaining.
Enbarkation and disembarkation went without a hitch. We did the 13 day cruise/land tour
package and everything went without a hitch. You can tell
Princess has done this once or twice before! We were amazed at how efficiently Princess
handled the sea of luggage at the airport--not missing a
beat.
All in all our first cruise was a very enjoyable experience and I would most certainly
cruise again with Princess.
I have another cruise booked with Renaissance to the Greek Isles, Israel and Turkey in
April 1999. I can't wait to compare the two cruise lines.
