Introduction
My mother and I have returned from a 12 day Panama Canal cruise on the Sun Princess. The
ports included Grand Cayman, Ocho Rios Jamaica, Cartagena
Columbia, Puerto Caldera Costa Rica, and Huatulco Mexico (skipped due to high swells). We
both live in Pennsylvania. This was our 2nd Princess cruise (5th
overall).
The Ship
This is was our 1st cruise on a mega-ship. The Sun is a wonderful ship! She is the
cleanest, best maintained ship we have been on. It was fully booked but it
never felt crowded. We never had to wait in line for anything. There were always plenty of
sturdy, padded deck chairs in the shade by the main pool. Our cabin
was outside 702 on Caribe deck. Not terribly spacious but comfortable with plenty of
storage space. The shower was roomy enough so the shower courtain did
not cling to you while showering.
The Food
We had the late sitting in the Marquis dining room at table 66. The service at dinner was
efficient but not outstanding. The food at dinner was very good to
excellent. Desserts, especially the souffles were outstanding. Don't miss them !!! We only
ate 3 breakfasts in the dining room - since we weren't sitting at our
assigned table the service was not as good as it was at dinner.
The food at the Horizon Court buffet was fair to good. Dessert selection left something to
be desired. Service was mediocre (very slow to clean tables while
passengers were waiting around to find a clean table).
Coffee/tea/ice water were available on deck 24 hrs.
Entertainment
Main shows were bad to mediocre. Definitely geared towards the 70+ crowd. In the evening
enjoy the jacuzzi instead 'Oddysea' !!! Current movies were shown
in the Princess Theatre. We saw Good Will Hunting and As Good as it Gets.
Negatives
Too much junk mail in our mailbox outside the cabin!!! 1 notification of the Art Auction
would have been enough. The sales tables piled with Carribean wear,
'gold' chains, watches, etc in the Atrium cheapen the whole effect of this lovely space.
Weather
Perfect to the whole 12 days.
Conclusion
We had a great time relaxing on the Sun Princess. It was an outstanding cruise I would
recommend to anyone. It was very hard going back to cooking my own
meals and making up my own bed. I don't think we will ever cruise on any bigger ships than
the Sun Princess. Seems like you loose the whole 'being on the
ocean' feeling on a very large ship. Bigger is not always better when it comes to
cruising.
