This was our 3rd Royal Caribbean cruise. We previously cruised on Majesty and Monarch. The
Grandeur is a
beautiful ship and we found it to be very stable. Our sons---ages 25 and 20 joined my
husband and me. Our sons
had an inside cabin which they found to be fine. My husband and I had a lovely cabin with
a small balcony which
was great. We found that we used the balcony alot--always had coffee and rolls first thing
in the morning---very
delightful way to start one's day.
The cabin was very nicely appointed and roomy and very clean. We really liked
the configuration of the ship--never felt crowded---and it seemed to flow very well. It
was easy to get around
because it is logically set up. The dining room was beautifully decorated and we had a
great waiter which always
makes for an enjoyable experience. The food was good--not great. The lobster tail was very
overcooked and
tasteless. On the other hand, the prime rib and filet mignon were very good. Overall, the
food was better on our
other Royal Caribbean cruises. Since we always select the late seating, the midnight
buffets were never a big
issue for us. However, we were never told----either by our travel agent or the cruise
line--that they had eliminated
all but two of them. We all felt that we should have been told about the change. The
passed light bites that they
serve in lieu of the buffets are pretty awful. It was always a guess as to what they were.
I did not find them
appetizing at all.
The Grand Buffet is beautifully presented and very extensive. It is something to see
even if you
are not planning to eat much of it. In our opinion, the Easter Caribbean itinerary is
weak. We understood this
when we booked the cruise but we enjoy the ship as much as touring. Labadee was a lovely
surprise---it is
beautiful and very relaxing. Dont park yourselves at the first spot you come to--if
you continue to walk, you come
to beautiful, breezy beaches. Also, be aware that if you go to the straw market for
souvenirs, you will be
unmercifully approached by the vendors. A better bet would be to go to the
enclosed area where there is less
bargaining but you are not harassed. We did not think much of Old San Juan. It is not very
scenic and the
shopping is minimal. They do have tours to the rain forest, etc. but we did not go on them
as we had been to
Puerto Rico some years ago and had seen the highlights.
St. Thomas is a beautiful island and the shopping is
fun. People are pleasant and not high pressure. There is definitely savings on liquor and
perfume and
cigarettes---jewelry, too, but you have to know your prices. We had been to Coco Cay
before on other
cruises---were not crazy about it. The water is very warm--not real refreshing. But
you can catch some cool
breezes and relax. They have the usual water activities such as wave running, snorkeling,
etc. The evening shows
on the ship were inconsistent---saw a great comedian one night. The revues are mediocre
and we saw a comedy
act that was very good but we had seen the exact same act a few years ago on one of our
other cruises. They
should have at least changed their material. Another comedian used some rather tasteless
material which
offended some guests as they walked out during his performance. Our sons did not find many
people their age to
hang around with which was somewhat disappointing to them. However, they really like ship
life so it was not the
end of the world to them. All in all, we had a great time---even got to bond
with our kids a bit. We strongly
recommend cruising as a family vacation for both its flexibility and togetherness. We feel
that you get a lot of value
for the money you are spending. We are already talking about our next cruise and we would
definitely cruise
Royal Caribbean again.

Background Information:
My husband is 30 and I am 26. We are from San Francisco. This is my third cruise and my
husbands first. Previous
cruises include RCCL Majesty Western Caribbean and Premier's Seawind Crown Southern
Caribbean. We made our
own flight arrangements.
Embarkation:
Smooth and uneventful however the lines for your room key/super charge card seemed a
little more hectic that I
remember but it overall took very little time.
Room/Cabin Steward:
We immediately went up to our room to check it out. We were in cabin 7016 category D. The
room had moderate
décor and was well appointed. Plenty of closet space and the bathroom was your average
cabin size bathroom
although my husband almost went into shock when he saw the size of the shower! I did
pre-warn him. The verandah
was wonderful, at first I was a little disappointed because it was smaller that I thought
it was going to be but I quickly
overcame that disappointment. We didn't have breakfast on it but I would spend lots of
time out there while my
husband was in the shower or getting ready for dinner.
Our cabin steward was wonderful his name was Barrington and he is from England. Very nice
always made funny
arrangements with my husbands' hats and the bed pillows. He always kept us laughing and
kept the room very neat
and tidy.
Windjammer/ Dining Room and Wait Staff
I have to comment on the job that RCCL did with our table mates. We were at the second
seating and on our first night
we were seated with an 80 year old man traveling alone and a man, his wife and her brother
all about in their late 50's.
Talk about a mis-match. Needless to say we were ready to make a change in assignments,
however after sleeping on
it we decided it wasn't so bad and we certainly did not want to offend anyone. So we
stayed, and the next night the
party of three left and was replaced by two delightful couples. They all were lots of fun
and we all plan to keep in
touch.
We were happy with most of the food. We ate breakfast in the dining room about three
times, lunch twice, and all of
our dinners the food was very good. For dinner meat seemed to be the prefferd choice this
made my husband happy I
however do not eat red meat and tried pasta and fish as alternatives. Most of the pasta
dishes were adequate and
one night the fish was the 'Chefs suggestion' and it was excellent that night the rest of
the time it was adequate. I am a
dessert person and the desserts were almost always excellent. We ate in the Windjammer the
rest of the time we also
took advantage of the afternoon tea that was served there also. Food in the Windjammer was
again adequate I am a
picky eater and I could always find something. The fruit selection was excellent which
made me happy. We also had
pizza and hotdogs and French fries in the solarium, which were excellent.
The wait staff was excellent. Our headwaiter came around once a night for a brief
conversation however the waiter and
asst. make up 99% of the excellent rating. Our waiter was Shankar from India and the
assistant was Akram from
Tunisia. Both were very nice and laughed and joked around a lot with all of us. I drink a
lot of water and the asst.
waiter got tired of coming over to refill my glass so he decided after the second day that
I was going to get 3 glasses of
water and when they were all close to empty then he would come to refill. They were a lot
of fun.
Other crew members
We visited most of the lounges and all had pleasant bar staff. The bar staff at the pool
was also very good. Captain
James MacDonald was extremely accessible we saw him everywhere. This being my third cruise
I would have to say I
saw him the most. We may have saw him so much because he had a visitor to walk around
with, his girlfriend or wife
(I'm not sure which) was with him everywhere he went. My husband and I even got up early
for some lap swimming in
the solarium pool one morning and nobody was in the pool except for the captain and his
significant other. I was not
impressed with the cruise director he was ok but I think he lacked the enthusiasm that I
have seen in some others.
Ships facilities/entertainment
We used the gym twice and it was small but had all of the basics you need for a good
workout. We went to the casino
once and got our fix and then left. It was good size and seemed to be able to accommodate
everyone that was in
there. We played Bingo once at the end when the jackpot had snowballed to over $10K that
was fun but we didn't win.
The pool was ok there were an awful lot of children on board and on days at sea it was
hard to even step foot into the
pool. The solarium pool was very nice and it would have been nice if they kept that one
for adults only but that one
was also full of kids running and diving when they are not supposed to be.
The entertainment was poor in my opinion. We went to two shows and the rest we caught on
TV later the next day. We
watched them and were glad that we didn't waste our time catching the live shows.
Port of Call The ports for this itinerary included Labadee, San Juan, St Thomas and CoCo
Cay.
Labadee I enjoyed very much during my visit there in '97 however, this was visit was not
as pleasant. The water was
full of jellyfish, they were everywhere. Apparently they came in a couple of months early
this year. Also one of the
beaches was closed and they were doing some kind of construction so there was a very
large, unattractive barge
sitting in the water with this big crane digging up all kinds of dirt. Don't get me wrong
I love Labadee it really is a
beautiful place, but the circumstances did not make it as enjoyable as I remember.
In spite of everything I have read in past reviews about San Juan we had fun. We went to
both forts, walked around
town, looked in some stores. This was our first visit so we didn't have the 'been there
done that' mentality that many on
the ship had. It was very hot in San Juan and we were walking everywhere so we took
advantage of the Crown and
Anchor club to cool off.
St. Thomas is beautiful. I am very interested in a return trip there sometime. We stayed
on St. Thomas the whole time
despite suggestions I received from seasoned cruisers to go to St. John instead of
battling the crowds at Megans Bay.
The way we planned it worked out perfect. We got off the ship bright and early at 7:00
took a taxi to Megans Bay and
had the beach to ourselves for about 3 hours. Around 10:00 the crowds start coming. The
beach is truly beautiful
crystal clear, calm, warm water surrounds you it was heaven. We left about 10:00 and went
back to the ship,
showered, ate lunch in the dining room and then headed back out to do some shopping. This
is truly a jewelry haven
although we did not buy any. We did find some pieces to our china that is not available in
the states. And we also did
the usual souvenir shopping. This was a great day and a great port.
Co Co Cay was canceled due to Hurricane Dennis presence in the Bahamas. This was
disappointing we were looking
forward to snorkeling however we understand safety first.
Overall it was a wonderful cruise. I really can't imagine a bad one. The ship is very nice
and the staff is superb
however, I do not think I would choose this itinerary again. We prefer more ports and
activities. We may try the
Monarch and head to the Southern Caribbean next. I do recommend this cruise for families,
first timers or for those
looking for a 'low key" relaxing vacation.

Summary: Arrive early on the day of departure. Food service staff is 1st. rate, however
the food could use
improvement. Avoid the snorkel trip in Labadee. "Demand" more time in St.
Thomas.
We arrived in Miami 1 day early. This was a good idea to avoid the general problems of
transfer from an incoming
flight.
The ship was absolutely beautiful. Enought space, and the cabins were quite nice. We were
in an outside cabin on
one of the lower decks.
Labadee was a nice surprise, the jet ski excursion was great. We did go the morning
snorkel trip to a Amalie island.
The snorkeling started about 500 yds. off-shore and the reef action was lame. Snorkeling
on the tour was not a very
good idea.
The vist to the old fort in Puerto Rico was neat, however in general their wasn't much to
see. Duty free prices were
good. Did not feel we had enought time to go to the rain forest.
St. Thomas was the highlight of the ports of call. We did a self tour to St. Johns, it was
wonderful. Their was not nearly
enought time in St. Thomas. The shopping was great, however we visited the Crown and
Anchor club and found 1
member of the RCI staff to be quite rude. Questioning us on where we had been and
indignant on our "choice" of not
using the prescribed tour to St. John.
Coco Cay was neat. The water and snorkling was great and the COCO-LOCO's were addicting
(What time is it ???,
COCO LOCO Time..... The Rasta hats are are a Halloween "must".
In general the food was OK at best, however the sevice was the best anywhere. My 7 year
old daughter was treated
like a princess, made the cruise for her and us.

This was my 19th cruise, third with RCCI. Also have sailed with NCL, Princess, Celebrity,
CCL, and Costa. I always
enjoy a cruise vacation, some cruises are better than others. The Grandeur of the Seas is
a great ship. I always like
to compare the "VALUE" with other ships and/or other cruise lines. I think RCCI
rates higher than CCL and NCL, but
not as high as Celebrity or Princess. THE POSITIVE ITEMS: Fast elevators, very rarely
waited more than a few
seconds. Day of week is written on carpet of elevator. Very easy embarkation and
debarkation. Pools open until
9PM Hot Tubs open until 11PM Good traffic pattern, easy to navigate this large ship.
Pre-poured beverages in
buffet areas helps to move lines rapidly. Food quality is very good, not as good as
Princess or Celebrity, but still
very good. The Grand midnight buffet was beautiful. Pizza, dogs, and great fries at Pool
Cafe. Nice Captian's
Cocktail Party.
THE SEMI-NEGATIVE: Cabin Amenities- No hand lotion, no robes, no hair dryer, no fridge. No
self service laundy.
The 1st midnight buffet was poor, compared to other ships. Only 2 juices available - OJ
and Grapefruit at breakfast
buffet, even CCL offers a few more. Bathrooms in standard cabins are tiny! Towels in pool
area are small! No Free
Post Cards of the Ship. Repeater's Party was plain.
THE NEGATIVE: No water/tea/coffee available where pizza, dogs, fries are being served.
CONCLUSION: A great cruise, a great value, great service, highly recommended.
Next scheduled cruise: Christmas/Millennium Costa Romantica Dec 22,99.

Air/Sea Program Initally was in a panic with our flight going into Ft.Lauderdale rather
than Miami, however we
arrived at noon and were on the ship by 1:30! To be honest we liked this airport option
better than Miami. Just a
side note...if you want special air connections (non-stop, early flights or special
connections) pay the $35 fee p.p.
up front and you can have more choices in your flight options. It really is great to get
on the ship early so you can
start to enjoy the ship.
The Ship:
Beautiful starts to describe her...we thought she was in great shape with very little
"wear" as reported elsewhere.
Our cabin had a window which was really nice, we usually settle for inside but we are
probably spoiled now. After a
couple days we experienced some "swells" due to Hurricaine Gert but the Captian
put out the stabilizers and
everyone seemed to tolerated the "rough" seas. As a tip, one guest was starting
to feel queasy and the dining room
staff offered a plate of green apples she said they really made her feel better. I guess
the apples have to be green
(in color) not red.
Dining Services
This was the first cruise for Chef Helga with RCCL. She is believed to be the first female
executive Chef in the cruise
industry. This being our fifth cruise the food in all dining areas was the best so far.
She was very visible and
approachable the entire cruise..very refreshing. Our dining room service was excellent and
our tablemates Alan &
Trish from England and John & Cherie from Australia truly added to this cruising
experience. With regards to the
absence of the Midnight Buffets...we really didn't miss them. The one "Gala" was
super and quite enough. Perhaps
having the second seating made a difference but I thought the buffet every night was a
waste. Again, this cruise's
variety of foods and fresh fruits was exceptional.
Excursions
We are not real big island folks and again most guests we not to impressed by the shore
tours. Generally most
people do as well on their own when it comes to touring the islands. We missed CoCoCay due
to the previous
Hurricane and Nassau was substitued....not even close...but what can you do. Regarding
Labadee...the suggestion
to go the the second beach is great advice...really private.
Service
Both dining and room service was excellent. Having cruised before we were not shy about
requesting extra entrees
and appetizers in fact, additional ice cream was a big hit! Our cabin steward was a little
reluctant to separate the
bed during the day but with a little insistance he complied and it really made a big
difference. Just remember you're
on vacation don't be afraid to ask for things...they love to receive the tip at the end of
the cruise...and this cruise
they truly deserved the recommended amount and then some.
Overall, RCCL is still doing a great job and giving an excellent vacation value. Oh
yeah...we selected the "Royal
Occassion" package and it was a great deal. Two massages, two bottles of great
champagne, robes, bridge tour
and frame formal photo...all for $400... probably the best buy on the ship.

This was the second cruise on Royal Caribbean for my wife and I. Our first was aboard the
Sovereign of the Seas in June
of 1998 for our honeymoon. We loved it so much we booked our cruise on the Grandeur
shortly after we returned.
Grandeur of the Seas is a beautiful ship with everything we could have possibly needed. My
wife's sister and her husband
traveled on the Grandeur along with us, and we choose to all stay in the same cabin to
save money. Although it was
crowded, for the amount of time we were in the cabin it was well worth the great savings.
Our cabin steward was fantastic;
we hardly ever saw her, but our room was always clean. Our room was right next to the ice
machine and we could hear the
thrusters that steer the ship into ports, but we were always awake when the noises began,
so it didn't bother us too much.
The staff aboard the Grandeur was really nice and they were always there to help. The food
and the service in the dining
room was terrific. We had many special requests and our waiter always made sure we were
happy. The only thing we
weren't overly impressed with was the entertainment. Of the seven nights we were on board,
the show was only good
three nights. The other nights we very boring and one of the comics was offensive to some
guests. The comic jugglers on
board were by far the best show of the week. We laughed until we cried. All of the ports
we beautiful, especially St.
Thomas and Coco Cay. We decided not to go to Magan's Bay in St. Thomas and now know we
made a big mistake. We
heard everyone on board talking about how beautiful it was. My wife insisted that we go
back to St. Thomas, so we have
booked another cruise on the Monarch of Seas for April 2000, which visits St. Thomas
again. We can't wait and are sure
that Royal Caribbean will impress us once again.
