Grandeur of the Seas Eastern Caribbean 10/7/00 - 10/14/00

This is my eighth cruise and my first on RCCL. I have been on HAL, Carnival, Celebrity and Premier
previously. For those who don't want to be bored with the details - this cruise rates as the best yet.

We were a group of eight - this was a family cruise. Ages ranged from seven to fifty-seven. We booked an
air-sea package with an overnight prior at the Miami Airport Hilton. Our flight landed about 11PM and an
RCCL rep greeted us and took us to a waiting bus to the Hotel. We were in our rooms by 11:45. RCCL
took care of the luggage. Saturday morning we completed the ship check in while at the hotel, boarded a
bus at noon and walked onto the ship by 12:30. The whole process was simple and painless. The ship is
beautiful, clean and well kept. Our cabin, 2556 was small but very comfortable. The TV had a good mix of
programming - including stuff for the kids. Soap and shampoo is provided - bring your own hair dryer. Our
cabin steward, Lulus did a great job and was very personable. I can't say enough for the dining room
experience. Our waiter Orlando, the busboy Sima and the headwaiter 'Mr B' were superb. The service
was impeccable. The smallest details were always taken care of and the timing was perfect. Food was
always served at the right time and temperature. I have heard comments about the food - my experience
as well as the rest of the group is that the food is wonderful. The food in the Windjammer was fairly typical
of buffet style dining - some good and some very good. Selections were fairly good and varied. The
lounges were all very nice and the theatre and shows were very good. Both pools were nice and we
always found room. The children's program was very good and the kids loved it. As far as the ports,
Labadee was beautiful - we spent most of the day in the water. The BBQ and drink services were
excellent. San Juan was nice for a walk around the shops, we did not do much else. St. Thomas is one of
my favorite stops. We shopped all morning and did the 'Wild Thing' in the afternoon. This is an awesome
boat and tour. Watch out - the rum punch is potent. Due to weather, we did not make it to Coco Cay - we
went to Nassau instead. We were one of six ships - very crowded. Disembarkation was a breeze - very
well organized and simple. In summary - we loved everything - can't think of a negative - we will absolutely
do RCCL again.

This is our third cruise, the second with RCCL. We booked our own cruise and air package on the
internet and we were pleased with the results and value. No problems with arriving in Miami and
picking up our luggage and then proceding to pier by cab. Embarkation was quite effecient with no
surprises. My husband and I had an inside room on the third floor. We found the room accomadated
us just fine. We enjoyed the stations on the TV, especially the ship notes, and cruise information
channels. We were disappointed to not have the towel folding each night that we had on prior trips,
but we found our room steward on top of all of our needs and he was quite pleasant.

The ship is the
most beautiful that we have seen. The solarium was fantastic! We waited in line at the Windjammer
each day for lunch and also for one dinner, and of course the midnight buffets. I would prefer never to
wait in line, but it was not too painful. The pool band was not to our liking at all. We could not
recognize any of their songs, even 'Who Let The Dogs Out' sounded odd. Too classical, we thought.

The ports were all wonderful. We took our own tour at San Juan for $10 off the pier. It was a cab tour
that stopped at your request. It was well worth the money. They let us off in Old San Juan where we
enjoyed shopping and walking back to the ship at dark. Labadee was wonderful, we floted on mats for
$8 each. Great value! Do not waste your time snorkeling here, wait for CoCo Cay. We snorkeled at St.
Thomas and once again took a cab at the pier for $5 ea. that hooked us up to a wonderful spot called,
Coki Point Beach. Days at sea were quite enjoyable and we joined in alot of the activities, which really
makes for good memories. CoCo Cay was another wonderful day. The snorkeling was the best ever.
The island is a dream come true from a travel magazine. The dining room service was excellant, and
the food was not far behind the service. The dining room was astounding. A full two story waterfall on
the back wall! The entertainment in the Palladium was first class. We danced somewhere each
evening, there was always something going on at several locations. I would think everyone could find
something exciting to do almost around the clock on this beautiful ship. Disembarking went smoothly
and the new luggage pickup area was greatly improved from our last cruise. We really had a great
time with no problems and very few things to complain about. We will be back with RCCL soon.

This was our 5th cruise and 2nd RC. Last year same week on Enchantment. Many of you have read
prior review and I thank you for kind emails. As before, I travel a lot and write about the experience. This
is meant for those who have some adventurous spirit primarily, and all else interested in frank
comments. Grandeur is a lovely ship, identical to Enchantment, but slightly different decor. We greatly
enjoyed the artwork in the halls and stair cases. Take the time to look at it and read the descriptions.
Ship was still in good condition, but could use a bit of updating. Carpets a bit worn, but the crew cleans
constantly. Embarkation was excellent. The air/sea program actually worked and the people in P.R. were
much better than those in Ft. Lauderdale. Busses got us right to ship and the organization was fine.
Cards were issued and (new thing) pictures are taken for entry. This slows things down, but adds to the
security. General food: Windjammer perfectly acceptable. Ate first lunch and one other meal. They even
had some curry dishes, which were well executed. View is nice and informality and speed is the trade-off
for buffet. Dining room food was fine. My son had 4 main courses every meal. We had two tables for our
group, we rejoined a family we cruised with last year. Met them on Enchantment; the Neustadts from
Texas and Oklahoma. We really all meant it when we said let's do this again next year. It was great fun.
We couldn't all fit at one table, so had two. They had a waiter named Hakan and we had a waitress from
China--Chai Ming. She was excellent. Very nice personality and very good to my kids. Got my
daughter's food out right away. The ass't waiter was mediocre, but overworked. The food was not up to
last year's standard. The taste just wasn't there. Many dishes were still quite good and I always bear in
mind they are putting out over 1500 main courses in 1 hour. As always we tipped the room steward $20
for our two rooms on the very first day. This ensures excellent service. His name was Vicente. My kids
had a K class interior room right across the hall. I cannot recommend this highly enough if you can
afford the two rooms. Our friends shared with their kids and they were always cramped and cranky.
Also, we had the balcony. Don't be cheap and get a lower room without one. The balcony is worth the
extra money, and that comes from a stingy person. The room is good. We had experience with the
identical room, so knew where to put everything and how much to bring. This year we brought clocks for
each room; an absolute must. No clocks in the room, but the room safe is still very nice.

We do all the touring on our own. Much too expensive to use the cruise tours and they go so/so places
with far too many people.

Ports of call. Aruba was fine, but my research showed it would be dull overall. So we went
horsebackriding. I planned this in advance. My 11 year old rides well and wanted to gallop on the beach.
Contacted Rancho El Paso in advance and they are the only ones who do beach rides and let you run
the horses. Great fun. Stop at beach and let you swim, too. Make sure to wear long pants and bring a
towel for cushioning. They like reservations 1 week ahead. The horses were in excellent condition and
the tour lasted 2 hours. $45 each, but he gave it to us for $160 for the 4 to refund the cab fare and my
phone call. If you reserve, use my name. I gave him my card. He may give you similar discount. Very
nice man. Cab fare was $9, but he will pick up at ship and he did drop us back off at ship. After that we
ate lunch on the ship and then went around Oranjestad. Not much there. Went to Carlos n Charlies
dancing at night. That was great fun and I usually don't like bars. We spent 4 hours there (9 people)
and had a really great time. Don't go if you are just going to sit. The fun is in the participation. Bill came
to $190 for drinks and we weren't even close to drunk. Stick to beers, they probably water down
everything else. Curacao. Rented a car from National. Can either cab or walk to Plaza hotel where the
cab is. Takes about the same time, since cab must go out of town to cross big bridge. Rental was $55
including insurance. Took car to Hato caves near airport. Cave tour leaves on the hour. Takes 1 hour.
Very easy cave to walk through. Above ground. Not the best cave, but still pretty interesting. Then went
to Seaquarium. Very nice display. They have a beach next to it if you want to swim. Some very
interesting fish displayed in fine settings. Allow about 1.5 hours max. Then went to downtown Willemstad
and dropped car off and did walking tour. Very interesting. Sorry we didn't get out to some of the
Landhuis but not enough time. Still tired from prior night at Carlos. St. Maarten/St. Martin: Lovely island.
Rented car from Hertz. Out at airport. They reimburse cab fare 1 way. $33 for day without insurance. No
need, deductible is $600. Be sure to check car over very carefully and note EVERY dent. Drove out to
Marigot, then Grand Case, then butterfly farm. Excellent exhibit at butterfly farm. Very colorful and
photogenic creatures. Back to lunch at Grand Case and then to beach near butterfly farm. Gallion
beach. Enclosed cove with fine swimming and low surf. Good for kids. No good for snorkelling though,
which was a disappointment, but can't have everything. Topless. St. Thomas: Rented car from Budget.
(Always reserve in advance from states) 1 block from cruise pier. $34. Car was shitty on outside but ran
ok. Again, note everything. Drove to Coral World. Before you go, look for a What's Doing in St. Thomas
and get the coupon. Save $4 each admission. Coral World is usually so/so but this one is excellent. Lots
of different stuff and good exhibits. $18 per adult before discount. Beach right next door is Coki and a
fine place to snorkel or swim. Leave your car parked at Coral World, it is safer. Then drove to Mountain
Top. This is not what it used to be. Very commercial now. Miss the quaint shack atmosphere. Got a
Banana Daq for $6.50. Ask for the free souveneir cup rather than the simple plastic one. They don't
give you the good one if you don't ask. Went back to town after and walked around Charlotte Amalie.
Stops in order of interest: St. Martin, Curacao, St. Thomas, Aruba In order of fun: Curacao, Aruba, St.
Martin, St. Thomas We cannot comment on shopping, we generally don't waste our time doing this and
can't understand why people do. The goods are the same as back in US and if there is a problem there
is no way to return them. To save 10% is not worth the hassle or risk. What makes people think they
won't get ripped off? We got massages on board and enjoyed them even at $100. The casino was fine. I
play craps and the dealers were quite nice. I didn't win at bingo. However, after last cruise, I did a
statistical analysis and simulated the bingo progression. Conclusion: Don't play during week (excpet for
fun) and save your $ for the last game and play then. Much better chance. The shows were awful. The
production shows were fine for a change. The dancers were good and the show tune numbers
(Broadway and movies) was well done. The headliners were terrible. The Coasters opened. These are
not originals, since they would be in there late 60's. But, who wants to hear Charlie Brown? When will
the cruise lines realize they have mostly people under 50? The second night there was a guy from
Foreigner. I didn't recognize him. He was a mediocre singer, but a better musician. He must have been
one of their backup band. He only sang bits of two Foreigner songs, so must not be allowed to do the
whole number. Many people walked out. Again, he did mostly big band numbers from the 40's. Uggh.
However, the worst was this comedienne named Jennie something. She was truly awful. She comes from
Utah and told 10 minutes of anti-Utah and anti-Mormon jokes. Only 6 people were from Utah and they
got the jokes. Unfortunately, they were Mormon and were very offended. Then she did anti-children
jokes to a family cruise and then anti-Catholic jokes. Since 1/3 of the audience was Hispanic, they were
just thrilled. She walked off mid-stream since people were just staring at her. Worst part is she came
back the next day to close the cruise. Doesn't anyone audition these people? The cruise staff was ok,
but not as good as last year's Enchantment. The newlywed game was funny, but the questions were
identical to last year. The responses seem canned and the cruise director was stale. It is still worth
seeing. The Novel Quest was funny to watch. The disco was lots of fun except on 70's night when it got
very crowded with people who don't dance but came to take pictures. Still a good time. The activities
were ok, but there seemed to be fewer of them then last year. I won both horse races. The kids club was
good. My daughter liked one gentleman from Hawaii and thought the other counselors were only fair.
However, she went every night and enjoyed the activities. It is a great ship if you are 11. My son (18)
had a very good time, but he always does. Feel free to email me for ?s or details.

This was our second cruise on Royal Caribbean - the first one being on the Majesty of the Seas.
Overall, I am glad to be home as the Grandeur was a major disappointment in several ways. Let me
state that my husband and I traveled with our 14 year old daughter who brought along her friend.

First, the negatives.

The ship, although only four years old, looked much older than her years. My biggest complaint
regarding cleanliness was the soiled carpeting. The lower decks were extremely soiled as were the
stairways. I don't understand why they can't pull out a rug shampooer now and then and clean the
carpeting; or put down a patterned carpet. The carpeting on the ship was pale grey.

We were located on the lower passenger deck, and we could smell sewerage all week. This was a major
turn off.

We were also disappointed in the food in the dining room. The few good choices during the week
included the filet mignon, prime rib and jerk chicken. Most of the food served was of diner quality. The
desserts were outstanding. Another major complaint was the coffee. It was bitter and tasted burnt no
matter where it was served. It took five to six creamers to get it remotely light. Many other people
complained about the coffee and could not drink it as well. Another problem were the bar beverages.
They were overpriced and contained little alcohol.

Although not the cruise line's fault, throughout the entire week, we had rough seas, and the ship rocked
and rolled continuously. From San Juan to Aruba, we had 13 foot seas, and everyone on the ship either
had a patch, wristbands or took Bonine. From Curacao to St. Maarten, the seas were 20 feet, and
consequently, upon arriving in St. Maarten, the only island accessible via tender boats, the Captain
decided we would not be allowed to tender to the island. This was a major disappointment as this was
the only island I had not already been to. To make up for it, the Captain gave us 1 1/2 hours of open
bar. We then spent an additional day at sea cruising around in 20 foot swells. The ship's stabilizers did
not seem to do their job.

Another problem we had was 'At Sea' days. While trying to relax and read at pool-side (an impossibility),
the same silly games and loud music blasted continuously. The belly flop contest and horse races and
people screaming were very distracting to those cruisers just wishing to relax and read. The poolside
band however was very good, although they played the same songs on the 'At Sea' days (three days
instead of two).

Now, the positives.

The teenagers had a great time and cried as they disembarked the ship. They made many new friends
from Puerto Rico, Finland and Canada. The teen program activities were varied and the girls were busy
the entire week. Some of the activities were toga parties, battle of the sexes, pool parties, and dancing
in the teen disco. They had their own cocktail parties (with non-alcoholic drinks of course) and snacks
and canned soda available. We purchased fountain drink stickers for their cruise cards for $20 each
which was a good bargain for the entire week.

We had an outside cabin which was much larger than the cabin on the Majesty. Two single beds
converted into a double, with a small sitting area, glass table and a lighted desk area. The shower and
bath were also larger and easier to use. There is no blow dryer in the bath.

The centrum was pretty with lots of brass and wood and the usual glass elevators. Just as we were
ending our cruise, they decorated the ship for Christmas, with many trees throughout the decks, and
garland and bows on the rails. It was very pretty. The shops were very elegant, although overpriced,
and the casino was large with the usual distracting carpeting and lights. We did unusually well in the
casino, with my husband and I winning at the slots, blackjack, roulette and caribbean stud poker. We
probably came home with several hundred more dollars than we expected!!

The shows were very good, with singers, comedians and dancers. The cruise director was corny as
usual, but he was also witty and charming. We went to a couple of shows he emceed, such as the Not
So Newlywed Game and Western Quest (an adult scavenger hunt), and we had a good laugh at both
game shows.

The food in the Windjammer Cafe was consistent and was at times, surprisingly, of a better quality than
the dining room. We had breakfast there each morning, with the exception of one morning we ordered
Eggs Benedict in the Dining Room, and the eggs were undercooked and could not be eaten. There was
pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and the most wonderful french fries available all day at the Solarium Cafe,
which was good in case you missed a meal. Also, in the Windjammer at 4 pm every day, were cookies,
self-serve yogurt and other treats.

The ports at Aruba and Curacao were disappointing due to their lack of cleanliness. We rented a
topless jeep and rode into the mountains. There, we visited a cave known as the Tunnel of Love, which
we had to explore with flashlights. Bats flew above, and we found it very interesting. Although it rarely
rains in Aruba, it poured down buckets, with the roads washing out beneath us. It was truly fun though,
as we came back into town like drowned rats, and all of the locals laughed at us from other cars. The
only problem in town were the sewers overflowing due to the lack of drainage. My husband almost
splashed raw sewerage into the car several times while trying to navigate his way back to the cruise
dock. At Curacao, there was a huge generating plant you had to walk by that spewed black smoke that
was probably there for many years. It would be a good idea if the government relocated the plant. We
did like the shopping in Curacao much more than in Aruba.

Our favorite port of call was St. Thomas. We decided to hop in a taxi and go to Magen's Bay for the day.
This was the highlight of the cruise for us. We swam in the crystal clear water and took photos of tropical
fish swimming around the huge rocks. A lovely cove to visit. We may decide to come back to St. Thomas
for a week if we can rent one of the lovely homes in the hills surrounding Magen's Bay. The Captain
decided to remain docked at St. Thomas until 9 pm so we could enjoy the Christmas tree lighting
ceremony, and also to make up for missing St. Maarten. We enjoyed shopping in St. Thomas, and I
purchased a Tissot watch for my husband for Christmas, and he bought me a Tanzanite and diamond
ring.

Embarkation, disembarkation and going through customs was painless and easy. We had three hours to
spare before our flight left, so we hired a driver to take us on a two hour tour of San Juan which was
very interesting.

It will probably be a long time before we take another cruise, as we were disappointed in the cruise ship
and we didn't enjoy dressing every night for dinner. Next vacation, we just want to relax in shorts,
tee-shirts and flip flops. Also, we like more peace and quiet and don't enjoy waiting in long lines. We
also like to choose who we eat dinner with, if anyone at all. Other cruise lines offer open seating, which
is a very good idea. If we did cruise again, I would take a premium cruise with Celebrity or Princess, as
we believe RCCL has lowered their standards and quality of services considerably.

The arrangements for the air sea program were the worst part of the trip. I had booked our trip February
2000 to fly out of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to San Juan Puerto Rico. Our said date was December 2,
2000 and we never received our travel documents until 4 days before departure. Needless to say this
had us worried. The day of departure at the Pittsburgh airport, there were several couples including
ourselves who had book their air travel with Royal Caribbean. We were all supposed to be on an US
Airways non stop from Pittsburgh to San Juan. None of the couple were given any seat assignments
ahead of time. We were told that we had to get our seat assignments at the airport. At the airport US
Airways had none of the couples who were going on cruises sitting with their spouses. Which for me was
very upsetting. I don't like to fly and want to sit beside my husband and hold his hand. We were told my
US Airways that Royal Caribbean never turned these flight requests in until November. Meanwhile most
of the couples who were not given seat assignments had booked their trip away ahead of time in either
February or March. Also, I had paid extra for preferred airline. The other thing the flight was over
booked. The airline needed volunteers to take another flight and arrive three hours later in San Juan.
My spouse and I took the bump so I would be sitting with my husband on the next flight. We also had to
change planes in Orlando instead of a non stop flight.

I was not happy with Royal Caribbean sending me my tickets four days before departure and the
confusion at the airport. Other than that, I found the Grandeur of the Sea a beautiful ship. Our cabin
although not big had alot of storage space. I did enjoy the cruise. I would travel again on Royal
Caribbean but the next time I think I will arrange my own air transportation.

The ship is very beautifull and is very well maintained. The indoor pool is great. We were a family group of 15
persons ages 29 to 55 and we all had a lot of fun and enjoyed the ship very much. The ports of call are
excellent. We all took the jeep safari excursion in Aruba (was ok), and the Canoe Safari in Curacao (loved it).
The Canoe Safari was the highlight of our trip. The only negative thing I could say about the ship is the food.
The dinning room service was excellent, as well as the food presentation, but the food taste and variety have
a lot to say. Variety was very, very poor. We were offered the same desserts for lunch and dinner. Also, the
same dinner entree three of the seven nights. The food taste of of the dinning room was fair, but that of the
Lido Deck was not very good. We all ate hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries when we had to eat lunch at
the ship. Maybe we expected more and were disaponted. We been in many cruises before (including other
Royal Caribbean) and did have our high expectations. The food of all the cruises we have been at before this
one was excellent. The food aspect is the only thing that the Grandeur of the Seas need to improve in order
to make this ship "perfect".
