I must tell you that this has been my favorite cruise! The Hawaiian Islands and the people are fantastic. There was always a warm smile and a pleasant "Mahalo" from everyone we encountered. They are the friendliest people we have ever met - what a day and night difference from the Tahitians! If you need a pre/post hotel, we really enjoyed the Outrigger Hobron on Hobron street. It's one block from the beach and was a bargain at under $80 a night.
Now onto the ship. We had very high expectations for this cruise. Although we weren't disappointed, it wasn't as great as we expected it to be. The main thing that disappointed us was the dining room food. There wasn't any fresh fish (and we were in HAWAII!) and very little fresh fruit. Many times the vegetables and side dishes tasted much like microwave-heated frozen foods. We certainly had many delicious meals like prime rib and lobster tail - and the soups were to die for. But overall the food was disappointing, and many fellow cruisers echoed our opinion. We saw hordes of fellow passengers eating at restaurants in port, in order to get fresh seafood.
We did have a superb waiter and busboy. Both RCCL ships we've been on (Sovereign and Legend) have had the best dining room service of all the cruises we've encountered. Service in the lounges was also excellent. The midnight buffets were just good. Our deluxe inside cabin was very nicely appointed. It was much larger than most RCCL cabins. It was also a very quiet - nothing creaked. The ship's interior and layout were typically elegant and neutral, although for some reason we both felt by the end of the cruise that we liked the Sovereign's layout a little more. Also, it wasn't kept super-clean - brass stairway handles went days on end without cleaning.
The activities on board were varied and well thought out. We particularly enjoyed the art auctions, cooking demonstrations, and cheese & wine tastings. The ship also has a well stocked library and some big cozy leather chairs to curl up in. Other activities included line dancing, ballroom dancing, pool games, ice carving demonstrations, and the ubiquitous galley tour. Our cruise director, Jamie Logan was entertaining and informative.
We had a nice surprise in the entertainment department - "Captain & Tenille" performed a great act. That was the first time we've seen a big name performer on a ship. Other entertainment included several good singers, pianists, and of course the ever popular newlywed & not so newlywed game. If you have never been to one, GO.
The islands were all beautiful, but our favorite was the Kona side of the big island of Hawaii. We were pretty adventurous on this trip, and rented a car on every island. I would recommend reserving your car rental before you start your trip for the best rates. Rates started at $50/day if you do not have advance reservations. We especially enjoyed going to Volcanoes National Park. Also, be sure to visit the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut farm. And, don't miss doing a helicopter tour thru Kauai, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
To sum up, the Legend was certainly a very good ship - we had just expected it to be a fantastic ship. But combined with the beauty of Hawaii, and the beautifully friendly Hawaiian people, this became one of our favorite all-time cruises.
