This is the eighth cruise we have been on, and the first with Royal Carribean. Overall, I was very
impressed with the product from this cruise line. Checking in and out was a breeze, the easiest I have
yet encountered.Upon leaving the ship (we flew with American), our luggage was loaded at the pier
for the plane, so we did not have to deal with it at the airport. Leaving the ship was very orderly, and
we were off the ship by 9:10 A.M. The food was a nice surprise. After reading some comments by
other travelers, I was somewhat apprehensive, as I am considered to be fussy about food. I thought
the quality was very good; not quite to the standard I found on Celebrity, but certainly all I could have
asked for. The service aboard was uniformally excellent. Every staff member I encountered was
polite, friendly and helpful. Our dining room staff was the finest we have ever had. The waitier, Timor,
busboy, Norman, and the headwaiter played games with our children, kept us entertained,
recommended the best choices on the menu and were happy to bring us two or three main courses
and multiple desserts. The cabins were small, as expected, but we spend little time in the room. The
ship never felt crowded except at the photo shop between dinner seatings. My complaints are
relatively few, and minor. The quality of the shows was not up to those on Princess, or Carnival, and
the exercise room was small and sparsely equipped. While there were ample treadmills, exercise
bikes, and free weights, there were few universal-type machines. We especially liked the fact that our
fellow passengers were not a rowdy lot, such as we found on Carnival. The pool games did not spoil
the peace of others getting some sun on deck. The ship was clean and well cared for. St. Lucia was
the prettiest of the five islands visited, and the catamaran cruise was a high point for us. The shore
excursions are expensive, but I do not know that they were more expensive than those offered on
other lines. We had a great time on the Monarch of the Seas and would definately sail again on
Royal Carribean.

Overall I would say our cruise experience on Monarch was positive. This was my second cruise with
Monarch. My last voyage with them was 4 year prior.
We chose to do the air/sea package to eliminate hassle. As our flight was overbooked (thanks
American) we checked in one bag without a 'Monarch' tag on it and had to claim it prior to being
whisked off by a RCCL representative. Even with this glitch we didn't have any troubles with our
connection to the ship.
Once on board we had plenty of time to explore the ship and 'duty free' shops just outside the
entrance. We chose to purchase canned soda because they were $1.50 each in the room. We were
told sodas were not included with meals. But in the formal dining rooms, they are included (but not
Ginger Ale).
We filled out our excursion form immediately and turned it in early because we wanted to be sure we
would get the trips we wanted. We did.
Monday was St. Thomas. Very nice island. We did the Submarine tour with Atlantis and were
impressed with the sites 80 feet down. My husband is a scuba diver so he wasn't as impressed as I,
but that's ok. Once the excursion was over, we headed to the ship for lunch then downtown via taxi
and hit the stores. Once exhausted from touring the stores, we returned to Monarch.
Tuesday was St. Maartens. They switched the islands around and also eliminated Martinique from my
last trip. I must say, I'm glad Martinique was eliminated. I was not impressed with the island in any
way. In St. Maartens we went to Orient Beach. We were in the not so nude section although we did
have some exhibitionists pass through our area. The food was included on this trip and was pretty
tasty. Our guide to and from the beach was rather pleasant and very informative. Unfortunately, we
were burnt to a crisp and we DID wear sunscreen. My only disappointment with the beach was the
multiple vendors waking us up to sell their items. But once they passed, they didn't return. Shopping
(jewelry) on this island is FANTASTIC!
Wednesday was Antigua. We did the island tour and learned to appreciate what we have at home.
Although Nelson's Dockyard and the fort we visited has glorious vista views, it was sad to think
peoples home were being destroyed so easily because they could not afford proper foundations.
The shopping was iffy on this island and the costs were expensive considering the selection. We
were fortunate to find a woman that would travel to get a specific style of shirt my husband started to
collect in St. Thomas and we were impressed with her. But the lighters with Antigua written in magic
marker left a little to be desired.
Thursday was St. Lucia. GREAT ISLAND! We did the 7 hour catamaran tour which encompassed the
sulpher springs and Mount Coubaril (sp?) Estates (the chocolate stick place). The water portion was
excellent, the food was excellent, the bus ride was not so excellent but the estate and springs were a
great tour and the people in St. Lucia are very nice and courteous. The shops just outside the ship
have tons of things to choose from. One hint, because they don't have too much American money,
try to keep small bills on hand for your purchases. Toward the end of the day they can't break large
bills ($20s).
Friday was Barbados. I still love this island. We did the Harbour Master Cruise down the West side of
the island and we really enjoyed our tour. The snorkeling was pretty good too from my husbands
recollection. Next time we'll probably do an island tour or something though to get in more sites.
Monarch overall was nice. The food was good. My husband ate two to three meals each night and
extra appetizers, etc. Our tablemates were incredibly nice and easy to get along with. Unfortunately
we were in a back room and could not enjoy the festivities performed by the waiters, etc. We did not
partake in the midnight goodies except for the Formal night buffet and we only took pictures of that
one. We had the late seating, which we prefer, and were not hungry by midnight. Which is a good
thing in my opinion.
We were impressed by most of the cruise staff. Unfortunately the cruise director Rizz seemed to be
quite fizzed in the morning and was not pleasant when asked questions. In the evening, however, she
seemed to come alive... for the most part.
We were sorry to have missed Monarch Madness, on our cruise video it seemed pretty interesting. If
we do Monarch again, I certainly don't want to miss that part of the entertainment.
Like others, we were not impressed with the Windjammer Cafe's food. Much to overcooked and very
sloppy presentation. Of course there were a lot of kids partaking in the food so the staff may not
have been able to keep up.
I feel the best time to do the South Caribbean is during late October, November or early December.
Less kids (if you want to escape, like we did), and the weather is not unbearably humid. It's hot, but
the humidity is turned down considerably.
Thanks for letting me share my review.

My husband and I traveled with our friends, another couple our age. We would not have considered
traveling without using the Air/Sea package. We would highly reccomend the use of an Air/Sea
package. Your flights are taken care of, your transfers from airport to ship and back are arranged,
and your flight arrival/departure are arranged to coordinate nicelwith the ships departure and arrival in
port. Our flights were flawless and on time, with the exception of a landing delay in San Juan due to a
severe thunderstorm, which was unavoidable. Arriving at the port in San Juan, we were quickly
directed every srep of the way to complete embarkation procedures, which took approximately 5
minutes. I was truly amazed and pleased! We boarded ship, went immediately to our cabin, then found
our way about the ship, and were greeted with lots of smiling faces who invited us to have lunch in the
Windjammer Cafe. The remainder of the afternoon was spent exploring the great duty-free port shops,
and trying to decide which of the beautiful lounges we would go to for before dinner drinks. The first
day of your trip will be very long. We would highly reccomend that you arrive one day early in the port
city from which you will depart. This will allow you to board the ship at your convenience, well rested,
and ready for that first hectic day. Our home is in the Southeast, but our flight was long, coupled with
the storm delay, and we were exhausted by the time dinner was over. However, there is a mandatory
life boat drill at 10:00 P.M. The crew on the Monarch took this entire procedure extremly
serious...which I was happy to see. The entire process takes about 45 minutes, and when it is over
you will be ready to crash. Overall, our shipboard experience was extremely positive. The staff was
very courteous and helpful. They always spoke and stopped with a smile if you had a question. In the
entire week I onlyencountered one person I would call rude. You will from time to time, however,
encounter a slight language barier. This happened to us one morning at breakfast with an assistant
waiter. Don't worry, there will always be at least two or three other people around should you have this
problem. Our cabin steward was absolutely terrific! We could not have asked for better service
anywhere. Our cabin was straightened several times a day, we always had ice and fresh towels, and in
the and once or twice a day he left cute little arangements made with pillows, or one of our robes
shaped into a rose, or a smiling face on our pillow made with pieces of paper! We cannot praise him
enough. I truly believe he waas magical because he took care of everything and was never intrusive.
Our cabin was on the inside on the fourth floor. We were expecting our cabin to be small, and it was,
but there are many benefits to the RCI small cabins. When we opened the door, we were a little
shocked. However, we unpacked right away and put everything away. There are all these terrific
nooks and crannies to tuck things into, so that we never felt crowded and did not have to step over
things. Our twin beds were put together at night to form a queen which was very comfortable. We were
amazed that such a small cabin could be so comfortable ans not feel cramped. This was our first
experience with an inside cabin, and I do not regret it in the least. We enjoyed the ports, toured
several of the ports and were continuously amazed day after day at how beautiful they all were. We
were particularly interested in local crafts, which were hard to find in some ports. The best and easiest
shopping is in St. Thomas and St. Maarten. When you get to the ports that the cab fares are not
tightly regulated, be careful and make sure you have what you want well spelled out with the driver
before you leave. If you don't like the driver, just turn around, there will be ten more waiting for your
business. I found beautiful prints and local dolls in local artists galleries. You should know what you
are looking for, price it before you leave home, and then go shopping. The Monarch put great
information in your cabin every night about the next day's port and shopping suggestions.
My husband and I and our friends left the ship happy and extremely well pleased with our trip on RCI's
Monarch We will cruise again in the near futere and it will be with no one but Royal Carribean.

This was the first cruise that my wife and I took, and our honeymoon no less.
I would without a doubt, no hesitation whatsoever RECOMMEND this cruise and the cruiseline for
anyone thinking of taking this sort of vacation.
So here goes my story...
Arrived San Juan, PR. at 1pm Sunday, August 29 1999. First impression: Wow, what a urine soaked
heck hole (What we saw of San Juan was only from the airport to the ship embarkation terminal, so
sorry if you live in a nice section of San Juan). Bear in mind that my wife and I had been up since early
Saturday morning cause of the wedding (I mean we partied our brains out). Add to that the fact got no
sleep due to the flight leaving Toronto at 6:00am. So we were a little dissapointed.
The trip to the ship was eventful. It seems that Royal Caribbean sends representatives to the airport
to pick up passengers that have booked directly with them only. So if you booked with, say Sears
Travel like us then you have to read the stuff they give you to find out who is supposed to get you
from the airport. We stood with group of travellers who had gatherd around a RCCL employee with a
big MONARCH OF THE SEAS sign, then some guy comes along shouting out our names. He says we
are supposed to go with him and that they have a bus to take us to the ship, and that we are late and
they can't wait for anyone else. So they send us alone in a 12 passenger bus with our luggage to the
embarkation terminal. As it happens we end up beating the people who were standing with the RCCL
employee to the terminal and as a bonus we had our luggage right there from the airport.
EMBARKATION: Some people tell of horror stories like waiting 2 to 3 hours to board the ship. This did
not happen to us. 45 minutes tops. We arrived at the terminal, which is like a big airplane hangar that
has a gangway suspended like five stories up and out the side of the building and is attached to the
ship. You go through customs and then stand in line with your bags to get to a counter where you
present your passports and cruise tickets to a an RCCL employee. You also let them swipe you credit
card to get your onboard charge account set up and they give you your room keys and a colour
coded thing to put on you luggage. You then drop your bags on a zoned out section of the terminal
floor, based on where you are staying on the ship, and head up an escalator to the upper part of the
terminal. Here you get to pass a line of Duty free shops that let you purchase alcohol and take it to
your rooms and consume if you wish. This is the only Port where what you buy in alcohol is allowed to
to be brought to your rooms. The rest of the cruise you get a ticket for your booze and pick it up at the
end of the trip. After shopping a bit you make your way to the gangway where you get a welcome
aboard picture taken. Let me warn you, if you are camera shy, then leave now. Cause there is always
some RCCL employee snapping shots that you can purchse and frame for your souvenir collection.
And also let me tell you my wife certainly did. She just loves those souvenirs.
Get on the gangway and walk to the ship. Wow you finally get to see the ship. Monarch of the Seas is
BIG, brother, let me tell you. We got a map to navigate our way to the cabin. And surprise our bags
were allready there. Some had to wait till 9:30pm to get their luggage.
CABIN 6554 TWEEN DECK: Port Side forward amidships. Oval window approx four by two feet in size.
Cruise ship cabins are small but comfortable, I'm 6'4" and the bed was long enough and cause the
steward, Hilton (Jamaican) connected two doubles into one bed for us it was nice and wide too. If you
leave the doubles intact the steward turns them into 2 couches in the day and then folds them down at
night. There is a chair and a desk with a lighted mirror, a vanity if you will, along one wall with the
closet. I was surprised at how large the closet was and it had lots of shelf space going along the side
from the floor up. On the other side of the room for about half the length of the cabin is the washroom
and shower. The washroom wasnt' that small. I envisioned folding myself in half to take a shower, but
that didn't happen. There is a TV mounted in the corner of the room and it has channels that tell you
about ship activities, ports of call, casino rules etc...
FOOD: What can I say besides the fact that the MONARCH was voted as having the best cuisine on
any ship in the Caribbean. That is what our waiter, Sheldon (Morrocan), told us anyhow. I couldn't
argue. You should not either, if you like 5 to 6 course meals. Every night a different theme. With as
many as 5 different main entre choices in addition to regular prime rib and chicken dinners for the
faint hearted. I'm talking sea scallops the size of a small child. Deviled crabs, Rock Lobster and Sirloin
Steak. Lake trout with a dill sauce for an appetizer. Damn my mouth waters just thinking about it.
Desserts that would make Rosie O'Donnell's fat head explode. Baked Alaska, cheesecake etc... Damn
I have to get a snack, excuse me... Can't type... eating... mmm... brownies... fattening.
ACTIVITIES: To much stuff to do in one week. That is just on the ship, let alone the shore excursions
to the ports of call. So here are some highlites:
SUNDAY NIGHT Depart San Juan. Welcome Aboard show in the Sound of Music Lounge. We took the
late seating from 8 to 10pm for Dinner, so our shows were before we ate. Informal dress for tonight.
Get to meat who shares your table for the week. After you eat there is the mustering drill for the life
boats which, by the way, is mandatory to attend there is a Big Party on deck with a steel drum band
playing "who let the dogs out" before it was popular, San Juan looks better in the dark and at sea.
Some old buildings get lit up nicely and there is a fort that you have to pass by to leave the harbour.
Been up for probably 36 hours and still going. I think we finnaly crashed at like 1am. Man what a first
day.
MONDAY St. Thomas: Hot and Sticky. Crytsal blue water. I can die now having seen the ocean like
they show it on tv. Coral World and Mountaintop excursion. Thumbs up. Mountain Top is the highest
elevaton in St. Thomas. Coral World is a marine park that has sharks and fish and stuff. It was a good
place to take pictures. Watch out for the Banana Daquiries at Mountain Top. Tasty but deadly man,
deadly. Captain's Formal Cocktail Party for dinner. Illusionist in the lounge. Get dressed up, and meet
the Captain if you want, or not.
TUESDAY Martinique: Hotter and stickier. Watched the ship dock cause you get into port here later
than other islands. Heard a lot of bad stuff about this island, like it was dirty and you get mugged etc...
so we didnt plan an excursion. Just walked around the downtown. Very narrow cobblestone streets. I
didnt feel unsafe, even bartered with a local women, cause I'm Canadian and speak passable French,
for one of our American dinner friends. Got him a good deal on a hip pouch wallet thing. Onboard they
had "horse races" Little kid's wooden horses ridden by passengers and you can bet on the races.
What a hoot! Comedian in the lounge before supper. A little Blackjack after. Yes $75 richer.
WEDNESDAY Barbados: Overcast in the morning and partly sunny in the afternoon. Still damn hot
and sticky. Snorkelling and sailing. Very cool. You swim over a sunken barge and there are hundreds
of fish inches away. After snorkelling for a while you sail on a catamaran and drink the free rum punch
till you puke, or not it's up to you. I drank the local Barbados beer. It was pretty good. Kinda like Coors
light. At dinner the wait staff perform a musical number, if the acts in the lounge weren't enough. Good
fun. More Black Jack, up $150. Missed the show before supper cause we were tired after swimming
and had a nap....hehehehe oh behave! But they had a Special Show involving the passengers: The
Not So Newlywed Game. They picked couples married for like an eternity and played the game with
them. What a riot! Damn we are having too much fun.
THURSDAY Antigua: Sunny and very freaking hot. Rained a little in the afternoon but just in the
capital. We missed the shower cause we were doing the Jolly Roger thing. Free rum punch and beer.
Docked in a secluded bay and swim. Use my casino winnings to rent a Jet Ski from a local on the
beach and hit the waves. Another great dinner. Also the lunch and room service is great. The freaking
snack that they serve between lucnh and dinner is like a meal itself. Pizza, subs etc... Just had to
mention it here.
FRIDAY St Maarten: Quite possibly the hottest it has been since we got here. Like St Thomas very
blue water. Have to take tender to the mainland. Port not deep enough to pull in. This day we took an
excursion that takes you to the french side to shop and to the dutch side to lounge around a beach
and swim and dont forget the RUM PUNCH. I think they breast feed on that stuff for crying out loud.
MIDNIGHT buffet at 12. Take your camera. Amazing presentation of ice and butter sculptures. Food to
die for.
SATURDAY At sea: You proabably think I joking about the weather. But the crew said that we had the
best week they had seen in long time. They said that the Hurricane season plays havok with their
schedule this time of year. The week before it rained more they said. Anyway it was hot that's all I
know. So a day to just relax and float in the pool. Farewell show in the lounge.
SUNDAY San Juan, again: Perhaps the worst part of the trip. Not just cause we had to go home. The
disembarkation procedure was very messed up. One person says that you cant leave until your flight
number has been called and another lets people get off and get to the airport. The guy who picked us
up when we got there a week ago said that he waited for like two hours for us to get off the ship, so he
could take us back. We just had to sit in the lounge and wait. We had a later flight so we had to wait
longer than other people. It sucked also cause we had to get up at 6am and get our passports from
customs officials.
But if that is all I have to complain about then Damn we had a great time. And I am sure that you will
too if you chose to take this vacation.
NOTE: Motion. The ship does make a noticeable amount of movement from time to time. Depending
on the speed of the ship and the height of the seas. I was terrified at the prospect of being Sea sick.
DIDN'T HAPPEN. The motion is worse when you are inside and have no reference points for the
horizon. You lift your leg to walk and feel a bit of a sway. But you get used to it and at night it helps
you to fall asleep. There is also a bit of vibration towars the rear of the vessel that is caused by the
machinery. I liked it cause it mades sure that my drink was well mixed before I finished it while watching
a show int the Aft Lounge.
