This was our second cruise and although we had a great and relaxing vacation, we came away a little dissapointed. Our first
cruise was on RCCL's Monarch of the Seas in the southern Caribbean and that was a modern, beautiful ship. The Song of
America is still a nice ship but it's not in the same league as today's new ships. Rumor has it RCCL is trying to sell the old
hag and replace this itinerary with one of their modern ships...good idea!!! On the positive side, my wife and I really enjoyed
having the three days at sea to just relax and enjoy each other. Itineraries that have a different port every day can be
exhausting. This particular itinerary was great with the first day at sea, then Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerta Vallarta
in consecutive days, and finally two full days at sea sailing back to El Eh. The overall service was excellent. If you go, make
friends with two of the friendliest on board, Roderick and Basil who are both bar servers from Jamaica. They are both great
guys and will take good care of your libation desires. If you like to play blackjack, go to Peter Tune's table. He has a good
sense of humour, is helpful and very professional. Some of the other dealers were too serious. Also, I won about $600 from
Peter but gave about $400 back to the other stone faced dealers. The dinners were a mild dissapointment. They were good
but not even close to the quality of our last cruise. There were fewer choices and less flexibility compared to the Monarch. I
have a theory this is due to competition. In the Caribbean, RCCL competes with several other high quality cruise lines like
Princess, Holland America, Norwegian, Cunard and Celebrity ( owned by RCCL ). On the Mexican riviera, it's only competitor
is Carnival which is known for very average food. The low marks I gave for room service were forgiving. It took us 45 minutes
to get a pot of tea and we had to call twice. We ordered breakfast one morning only to have a delivered platter of stone
cold food. And let me tell you, cold, runny scrambled eggs are not pretty. Despite some of the mentioned negatives, we felt
the cruise was a good overall value. If you live on the west coast as we do, it's easy and cheap to get to LA and you don't
have to worry about time zones.
