My husband and I traveled with a group of 20 from our area. We
used the Air/Sea program and ended up being delayed for at least
2 hours at Atlanta
airport due to mechanical problems. This caused us to be 'late'
getting to Miami, therefore arriving on board too late to even
grab a bite to eat at the
buffet. We soon realized that we had to quickly select shore
excursions (for the entire week) by 5:15, in between activating
our line of credit and doing
the muster drill. We ended up settling for 2nd choices on shore
excursions, since most folks had been there hours before and
taken all the 'good' trips.
We were disappointed to have had to rush around and, through no
fault of our own, missed out on the excursions we had planned on.
Moral: Get to
Miami the day before and stay an extra night if you have your
heart set on certain shore excursions and want to have time to
'take care of business'
AND see the ship in a leisurely fashion on the first day.
Our cabin was small but fine for all the time we were in it. Our
cabin steward was not extremely visible or friendly, but he got
the job done. When we
continued to have trouble with our TV remote, he told us we
couldn't throw it around or the batteries would continue to come
ajar! Duh! The most
strenuous thing we did with it was lay it on the bed, or
rearrange the batteries (as he claimed was the problem), but we
still couldn't figure the thing out. I
was bothered by his comments to us, although my husband said he
was only kidding with us. He wasn't smiling when he said it!
On a brighter note, our waiter was terrific. Chris made our week,
with his smile and friendly service. He joked and laughed with us
at every meal and made
our trip memorable.
As for the shore excursions, the Crystal Cay tour (a 2nd chice)
was not worthwhile. You would be better off hailing one of the
taxi drivers as you get off
the ship and ask to 'see the sights'. We did that in the evening
as asked to go to Paradise Island. It was one of the highlights
of our trip. And it was
inexpensive ($10 per person). We did the Conch Train tour in Key
West, which is an excellent way to see the entire town if you've
never been there.
I personally was disappointed that there were few (if any)
activities by the pool during the day. We enjoy going back to the
ship in the afternoon and
spending time by the pool (no days at sea on this cruise) but
there was nothing going on there. I noticed that on the Nordic
Empress, which was docked
next to us in Nassau, there were pool games entertaining the
passengers while there was no sign of activity on the Sovereign.
No Western Novelquest
on this cruise either.
It may sound like the trip was a disappointment, but the ship,
overall, was great. I'm just pointing out some of the things that
may influence others' choice
of cruise in the future.
Food was good. Most of what I had on the Lido Deck was good, too.
There was always room to sit at tables inside on the Lido Deck
(upstairs, especially)
and we had no trouble getting excellent seats for the shows in
the lounge. We liked that they had a few Kareoke sessions during
the week, too.
Embarkation and debarkation were a breeze. I recommend this
cruise for first-timers, especially. Being a 'veteran' of 7-day
cruises, this one was way too
short for me. (I like those leisurely days at sea )
