We had heard nothing but good things about Royal Caribbean cruises, so we decided to try it. I had been on Carnival's Ecstasy the previous year...and
from what I heard, the Sovereign of the Seas was going to blow me away. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed.

We arrived on board to find our luggage damaged. However, they patched it for us within 24 hours.

Our room was at the very end of the hall. We thought this would be quiet (away from partying-spring-breakers). Well, we weren't bothered by people, but
our room happened to be right next to the anchor. So every time the ship dropped anchor (about 7:00 am each morning), it was so loud in our room, we
couldn't even carry on conversation. If the noise level wasn't bad enough, our whole room was also vibrating. We asked to change rooms, but were
informed that the ship was full and there was absolutely nothing they could do for us.

Another problem we had was with the bathroom. For some reason, our toilet just stopped functioning. We called someone to come and fix it (this was
before dinner). When we returned from dinner and the show (about 4 hours later), the toilet was still not working. We called again. This time they told us
we called the wrong number (even though we called that number earlier and were told that the toilet would be fixed immediately). So we called another
number and within an hour or two, the toilet was fixed. We thought nothing of this incident until it happened three more times. At least we knew the right
extension to call! However, it was extremely annoying and frustrating to have the toilet stop functioning 4 times on a 4 day cruise.

Then there was the food...The dining room selections seemed boring. The food was mediocre at best. I had better food on Carnival (and they're
supposed to be one of the 'least-best' when it comes to food). For example, no matter how steak was ordered, it always came out dry and too well done.
Breakfast in the Windjammer was no better than in my college cafeteria. I expected omelettes made to order, fresh Belgian waffles, etc. They had
unappetizing scrambled eggs in a chafing dish, alongside 'hash-browns' that tasted like they had just been defrosted and warmed in the oven (Ore-Ida is
much better if you want frozen hash-browns). The pastries were not worth the calories. Overall, the food was very disappointing. On top of all of that, our
dining room waiters hardly spoke English. We were jealous of all the other tables who were having fun with their waiters.

The shows were very entertaining. But aside from the shows, we didn't find too many interesting activities.

The only redeeming factor of the cruise was CocoCay. It was like paradise. We got off the ship early and made it onto the beach before everyone else.
The water was crystal-clear, the sand was powdery-white, and the sky was a perfect blue dotted by a few white clouds. We didn't want to leave! We hiked
around the island (the rocks were a little tricky) when the beach started getting too crowded. It was really amazing!!!!

We are giving Royal Caribbean another chance (this December on the Majesty). I hope a longer cruise will be different (I've heard this is true). So I might
still recommend Royal Caribbean; just don't go on the Sovereign! (And try to choose an itinerary that includes CocoCay...)
