I sailed on the Sovereign of the Seas in December, 1995 with my husband and my Mom. It was my Mom's first cruise, and needless to say, now she's hooked.
The Sovereign is a beautiful ship inside and out. When you first get on board, you're greeted by a string quartet playing the Four Seasons. Wow! We were amazed by how elegant the ship was. The atrium is three decks high and the colors are very pleasing to the eye in shades of cream, peach, green, and mauve. Everything was immaculately clean.
We then went up to the lido deck to grab a bite to eat and explore the ship. Later, it was our turn to pull away from the dock, and see the beautiful view of Miami. If you have never been on a cruise, you can't appreciate that magic feeling when you are pulling away from the Port, with the warm breeze blowing and the sun setting behind the Miami skyline. It's one of the best parts of cruising. We then checked out the casino, show lounge, library, disco, beauty salon, and exercise facilities. All were great!
At dinner, we were not disappointed. We had the best dining room service of all the cruises we have been on. Our waiter's name was Krishna, and the busboy Ildo. They were awesome! The food in the dining room was also very good, with a wide variety of offerings.
The make-up of passengers leaned heavily toward seniors, with few young couples or younger families. This may have been due to the date of sailing (not during the summer or a holiday). The activities offered were plentiful, and my Mom and I especially enjoyed the afternoon bingo sessions. We went to the shows every night and thought they were average cruise ship fare. If you have never been to a "newlywed / not so newlywed" game, you must go. This is one of the funniest and most entertaining shows on the high seas.
We felt the shore excursions were reasonably priced and offered something for everyone. Our first port of call was Labadee, Haiti. It was a great day at a beautiful beach. The cruise line offers all kinds of water sports, and just plain laying around. They also a do a great beach B-B-Q with all the fixin's. This was definitely one of the highlights for me, and most passengers seemed to agree. Labadee is one of the nicest private islands I've seen.
In San Juan we went to the Flamenco show at the El San Juan Hotel, which was so-so (it was not the same show of the same name we had loved while here in 1991). What was really a treat was just walking around the grounds of this magnificent hotel, a real beauty.
Then it was on to the shopping capital of the Caribbean, St. Thomas. We found St. Thomas as charming as ever, even though they were still recovering from the hurricane. Our last port of call was RCCL's own private island - CocoCay, Bahamas. This was a lot like Labadee, but not quite as nice.
Overall, this was a great cruise. Its reasonable price (with unbelievable seasonal specials) makes it an excellent choice for first-time cruisers.
